As 2011 comes to an end, we ring out the European Microsoft Innovation Center and ring in the Microsoft Research Advanced Technology Labs Europe! While the name is certainly new, our emphasis on industry engagement, collaboration with other Microsoft Research labs, and drive to deliver substantial impact to Microsoft product groups remains. Across our two focus areas of data analytics and systems assurance, we achieved great success this year.

It’s been a year of expansion and connection for Microsoft Research New England.

Economics has grown substantially at our lab this year. We’ve welcomed our first full-time economist, Markus Mobius. We’ve seen tremendous growth and success in our Empirical Economics program, headed by our chief economist, Susan Athey, and Mobius. We now have many Empirical Economics projects concerning our online-services data—from the effects of news aggregators on local news consumption to the effects of currency fluctuations on advertising revenue. We also have some exciting ongoing projects in empirical health-care economics. There are more than a dozen external economists actively engaged with us in projects using Microsoft data.

Another exciting, eventful, and successful year comes to an end. Perhaps the most visible event during the seventh year in Microsoft Research India’s history was our move from our little nest called Scientia in the relatively quiet neighborhood of Sadashivnagar to a nice, new building named Vigyan in the heart of Bangalore. The space is larger and the neighborhood busier. We have managed to preserve the open, studiolike ambience our lab is famous for, thanks to careful design choices. The lovely courtyard on our floor, with its classical Indian wooden pillars, the vertical garden, and the slanted, tiled roofs, is perhaps even an enhancement over our previous digs.
