Cloud Insights from Brad Anderson, Corporate Vice President, Windows Server & System Center
As some of you may have already noticed, earlier this morning Microsoft announced that Windows 8.1 will be available to consumers and businesses worldwide on October 18, 2013.
But before you start your 8.1 party (with a DJ in a data center, for example), there’s even more good news:
I'm excited to announce that, on the same day, eligible customers will be able to download Windows Server 2012 R2 and System Center 2012 R2, as well as the latest update to Windows Intune! We’ll make evaluation versions available through the TechNet Evaluation Center, and these products will be available for new purchases when they hit the price list on November 1st.
Is it a coincidence that this will be 501st anniversary of Michelangelo exhibiting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel for the first time? If you love great works of art, then it’s up to you to decide.
Just a few weeks ago I wrote about the common planning efforts and engineering milestones we shared during the development of this R2 wave – and seeing these products and services become generally available on the same day (with all their integrated scenarios!) is the ultimate benefit!
I encourage you to keep learning about the 2012 R2 releases via our “What’s New in 2012 R2” series on this blog, and also download the preview bits if you haven’t already done it.
currently i have server 2012 Standard, is it possible to perform a in place upgrade to R2, or should i backup & re install again ?
And I just completed new Windows Server 2012 and System Center 2012 installation on serveral servers. Now I feel all obsolete.
Seriously, though, looking forward to better management of client's mobile devices.
Does this mean the products will be available for download in VLSC Oct 18? or this just for technet users?
Thanks a lot for the Info. Great and amazing cloud server...

"Full of ourselves" much?

update, in case you missed it: blogs.technet.com/.../ready-now-for-tns-amp-msdn-download-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx
Will on the 18th of october Windows Server 2012 R2 be supported on the System Center 2012 (non-R2 version) suite like SCOM 2012, SCVMM 2012, SCCM 2012?
What will happen to existing Tech-Net downloads installations when the subscription expires? Will they stop working?
For thoose who have free Dreamspark licenses, installed on a CPU that does not support CMPXCHG16b, what are the options? It seems that the iso of WS 2012 r2 can not be used for an install, either clean or upgrade (tested it). Will still get at least a kernel upgrade (from 6.2 to 6.3), perhaps even an interface (Windows 8.1-like interface) one?
"Comparing Windows 8.1 to a Michelangelo? Now that made me laugh."
Yes, indeed. Michelangelo's works are still well respected and get serviced (!) after 501 years.
Now, the import question: it was circulated that Win8.1 would come as an update to Win8. Is there such an update path as well for Server 2012 R1 to R2?
