Exchange 2010: OWA versus OWA light

Last week I got a question from one of my colleagues to see if there was a list available somewhere that describes the differences between Outlook Web App and Outlook Web App Light, as there is a list available describing the differences between OWA Premium and OWA Light in Exchange 2007 (Exchange 2007 = Client Features in Outlook Web Access).

The following link  was easily retrieved: Supported E-Mail Programs and Features, which includes a table listing some of the differences when accessing your mailbox using OWA, OWA Light, Outlook, Entourage, Mobile Device, POP, IMAP.

A great article about using OWA Light 2007 can be found here:

Microsoft Outlook Web Access Light 2007

But not really an overview of comparing OWA, to its light version in Exchange 2010.

So here’s an attempt to create such an overview…

  • I need a bit of help. My company is now switching to exchange 2010. we are having all out end users use the outllok web client. Here is my problem. Som end users are coming up in the outlook web app with the light version. How do I get the full version to wiork? and if this is automatic what do I need to download tio make the full version work for these customers. Can you please send me a response to j298ww@yahoo.com. Thanks

  • James,

We have published a Supportability Matrix which states when you should get the full version of OWA. It is possible that some of your users are not getting the full version due to their OS or browser used. More info can be found here: help.outlook.com/.../bb899685%28EXCHSRVCS.140%29.aspx

  • Just like James above, I am trying to figure out how to change from outlook web app light to the full version on my Droid X phone. Thanks

  • Jerry I have the impression that for Droid you should utilize built-in Exchange ActiveSync instead of  the wep app.

  • I know this is an old post ... but...

The only thing that I don't like about the premium version is the in-ability to select the columns.  I have a hosted exchange solution, and my staff has a quota of 100mb.  In order for them to find out the offending messages (at quick glance), they have to log into the light version so they can see the size column.  Does anyone have a suggestion on how to do that in the premium owa?

  • Comparison is much different for 2010.  More features available in light.  Does anyone have a comparison table for that???

  • What about the online archive? Is it available in "light"?
