  • Infrastructure Planning and Design Guides for Virtualization: Now Available

I have just returned from a two weeks vacation and currently in the process of grabbing all the updates in technology space in last two weeks, its not that i wasn't really keeping tab on what's happening ;)

Lets get back to business and lets see what's new in Virtualization. While i was away Microsoft has released Infrastructure Planning and Design Guides for Virtualization.

IPD for Virtualization is something which was really sought after by people like me, our Partners and our customers.

Lets have a look at what all different planning guides available for Virtualization.

    1. Selecting the Right Virtualization Technology: The objective of this guide is to enable the reader to rapidly and accurately select which Microsoft virtualization technology or technologies to use for specific scenarios.
    2. Windows Server Virtualization (updated for Windows Server 2008 R2)
This guide is designed to provide a consistent structure for addressing the decisions and activities most critical to the successful implementation of the infrastructure for Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V technology and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1.
    3. System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 (updated for SCVMM 2008 R2)
The goal of this guide is to help project teams gather information, make decisions, choose options, and complete the tasks required to create and design a Virtual Machine Manager infrastructure.
    4. Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5 (App-V)
This guide describes the latest release of Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V). App-V, formerly SoftGrid, enables organizations to respond to the challenge of managing applications by implementing application virtualization. Take advantage of new features in App-V 4.5 such as streaming servers and support for Internet-based clients. This IPD guide takes you step by step through the process of planning your application virtualization infrastructure.
    5. Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V)
This guide outlines the critical infrastructure design elements that are crucial to a successful implementation of Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V). It guides the reader through the four-step process of designing components, layout, and connectivity in a logical, sequential order. Identification of the MED-V server instances required is presented in simple, easy-to-follow steps, helping the reader to deliver managed virtual machines to end users.
    6. Terminal Services (Presentation Virtualization)
This guide leads the reader step by step through the process of planning a Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services infrastructure. Key fundamental decisions and tasks are addressed, such as the identification of which applications are to be delivered, and which resources are needed to employ Terminal Services to serve the selected applications.

Also Our System Center suite of products provide a full suite of management solutions for this environment and the Infrastructure and Planning Guides for System Center have been updated for System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2.

  • Its VACATION TIME baby..!!!

Its finally the time of year when you need a break to recharge yourself.. Yes.. Its vacation time for me, I ll be on a vacation for next two weeks starting this Saturday.

On Saturday afternoon I’ll fly to my home city New Delhi and will spend quality time with my Family and hangout with my childhood friends.

    File:Barakhambaroad.jpg                     New Delhi

This vacation is also special as I looking forward to celebrate Eid (great Islamic Festival) with my family and friends this Sept 21st .

Eid ul-Fitr or Id-ul-Fitr (Arabic: عيد الفطر ‘Īdu l-Fiṭr‎), often abbreviated to Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity", while Fiṭr means "to break the fast" (and can also mean "nature", from the word "fitrah"); and so the holiday symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period. It is celebrated starting on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal

I know what i am going to pray to God this Eid.. to bring end to this economic recession and bring peace and prosperity to the world. Ameen!

I’ll leave you with this funny video when Terry takes a vacation.. Enjoy!

I’ll see you when i come back :)

  • VMware VMFS-3: Interoperability Reality

Just came across this interesting blog from Jason Perlow

    He Says:

The VMWare Cluster Locking File System, version 3 (VMFS-3) Is one of the core technologies used in VMWare ESX/vSphere 4 virtual infrastructure environments. Unfortunately, it’s also a completely proprietary black box that makes interoperability nearly impossible.”

I had a customer which had to perform a business continuity recovery exercise over a 48 hour period which required my assistance as the VMWare lead, working round the clock shifts in a cold datacenter, sleep deprived, bugged-out on fluorescent lighting and hopped up on dispenser machine coffee, Dunkin’ Donuts Munchkins and MSG-laced snack foods.

    He further says..

“For those not familiar, the ESX hypervisor itself can talk to local VMFS-3 storage, or to iSCSI or fiber SAN-attached VMFS-3 storage. It can also talk to remote NFS storage through its vmkernel interface over the network. However, It CANNOT talk to the USB ports on the hardware the ESX server itself is running on, nor can it locally mount any other file system other than its own VMFS, or files mounted on the CD-ROM or DVD drive.

So if someone provides you with a disk that contains copies of your VMWare virtual machines, how do you transfer it? Well, in our case, since we didn’t have replicated VMFS-3 LUNs that we could just connect to as a regular VMWare ESX datastore using the SAN, we had to connect the eSATA drives to a PCI eSATA adapter that was hooked up to a Red Hat Linux server, exported the storage as NFS, and used the vmkernel NFS interface on ESX to copy over the files over the gigabit LAN using the Windows-based VMWare Infrastructure Client.”

Well said Jason, Virtualization is there to make things simpler and easy to both IT and Business, Its should not be a rocket science, it should be considered as just another piece of great technology as any other technologies that we use in our daily lives to make things easier and simpler instead of making me work round the clock in that super cold server room.

For all you who have haven’t yet….. Rely on HYPER V, and sleep well at nights :)

  • Microsoft Virtualization: Optimized Desktop

Today we’ll talk about Optimized Desktops and how its different from Traditional desktops.

There is lots of buzz word around for Optimized Desktop but do we really know what exactly a Optimized desktop means.

Enterprise IT infrastructures are increasingly complex to manage. Microsoft Optimized Desktop model enhances application deployment and compatibility, increases IT responsiveness and end user uptime, and helps reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) of your desktop software and IT management. With Microsoft VDI, a true optimized Desktop solution can be achieved.

There is this never ending war between Users and IT department. User wants more flexibility, IT wants control and security. Now Optimized Desktop is THE Solution here.

When do you need a Optimized Desktop over Traditional Desktop in your organization?

Lets have a look in these scenario when you need Optimized Desktop:

Microsoft Optimized Desktop is perfect solution to these scenarios taking care of both user and IT department’s requirement.

With Microsoft Virtual desktop Infrastructure(VDI) and Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack(MDOP), a true Optimized Desktop can be achieved.

If you are one of these above User you MUST watch it to see what flexibility and productivity it brings to you and how it can completely change the way you work.. And if you are an IT PRO, you should DEFINITELY watch it to realize the potential of Optimized desktop for your IT and Business. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT..!!!
