Test lab guides, currently known as “step-by-step” guides, provide instructions to configure a feature, technology, or product in a test lab with a minimum number of steps and computers. By setting up a test lab, you can experience the functionality of a feature, technology, or product for yourself and then use the resulting test lab for additional experimentation during your evaluation and pre-deployment phases.
In an era of increased interest in multi-product/feature/technology scenarios (see my previous ICAB blog post on our cross-technology and cross-product solution content), modular test lab guides allow you to build out these scenarios in a test lab one feature, technology, or product at a time. Here are the modular test lab guides for DirectAccess with Network Access Protection (NAP):
· Test Lab Guide: Demonstrate DirectAccess
This guide describes how to configure the foundation network infrastructure, configure DirectAccess, and then demonstrate DirectAccess client functionality on the different subnets that simulate the Internet and a corporate intranet. The result is a working DirectAccess test lab.
· Test Lab Guide: Demonstrate DirectAccess with NAP
This guide describes how to take a working DirectAccess test lab, configure additional network services for NAP and Group Policy settings for NAP clients, and then demonstrate DirectAccess with NAP functionality. The result is a working DirectAccess with NAP test lab.
During the evaluation and pilot deployment phases of multi-product/feature/technology scenarios, you need to know how to troubleshoot common problems. Troubleshooting test lab guides allow you to learn troubleshooting tools and practice troubleshooting scenarios in the controlled environment of a test lab. Here are the troubleshooting test lab guides for DirectAccess with NAP:
· Test Lab Guide: Troubleshoot DirectAccess
This guide describes DirectAccess troubleshooting tools and how they work in the DirectAccess test lab, then takes you through five DirectAccess troubleshooting scenarios.
· Test Lab Guide: Troubleshoot DirectAccess with NAP
This guide describes NAP troubleshooting tools and how they work in the DirectAccess with NAP test lab, then takes you through three DirectAccess with NAP troubleshooting scenarios.
Here are the resulting set of test lab guides for DirectAccess with NAP and their relationship. You build out the DirectAccess with NAP test lab starting at the bottom and going up, using the troubleshooting test lab guides to gain troubleshooting skills along the way.
What do you think? Are modular test lab guides something you or someone else in your organization would use to learn about or adopt a new multi-product/feature/technology scenario? Are the troubleshooting test lab guides something you will try as part of your evaluation?
We would love to hear from you. If you have comments, please leave them in this blog post.
