My name is Todd Headrick and I am the product planner for the Microsoft Windows Home Server.  I have been working on this product for a few years now, and I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge about Home Server here on this blog.

The Windows Home Server team is eager to share news, insights and information about our product.  And we're equally eager to hear your thoughts and feedback.  This blog will include contributions from the product management team, development team, support team and the marketing team.

Bill Gates recently announced and showcased the Windows Home Server software at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show.  We were thrilled by how many people were excited and interested in this product.  I encourage you to take a look at some of the news coverage and information available via the links to the left.  Stay tuned for more postings coming soon!

  • Great !! I have been very thrilled with what I have seen on the videos especially thge channel 9 one.  Share, open up, tell us more :)

    Thanks,

    Still......Grey

  • I think you have a real potential winner with WHS. I like it, just what we need. Does the job and easy enough for Joe Sixpack to use. Just need to get the bugs out, and so strange some of them are.

I hope us hard working, stressed beta testers get a complimentary RTM copy (please).

    Nice one MS.

  • Nice! Can't wait to hear more indepth info about this product. Give us the goods.

  • I'm definitely on the band wagon with WinHoSer (I just made that up)! I have 2 PCs, 2 laptops (1 for home and 1 for work), and an Xbox 360 that I use to play music and display my pictures and videos. This sounds like the perfect solution to have a centralized location for all my files and goodies

Please keep the news coming and if you're in the need for a beta tester...PLEASE COUNT ME IN!!!

  • I hope it is not too soon to suggest a feature - (although you may already have it in the product).

When a user saves a new media file in the designated media storage area WHS should automatically ask if you want to also make the file available on portable devices with built-in storage.  These devices would be registered with the system and recognized as available by the server if they are picked up by the local wi-fi network or attached to a cabled connections.

After copying the file in place WHS simply askes "Would you like this song/video availble on one (or more) of the following devices?"  User selects from the list of devices and selects OK - or no if they only intend to use the file at home.

I would be interested in testing and giving feedback if you are looking for testers.

    cheers!

  • I'll agree with "thewatcher" on this one! It would be really nice if I could just flag a file and have WHS create a shadow version of it pre-converted for loading on my Zune. I'm spending way too much time managing my DLTV and *cough* Hero's episodes ready to watch on the road!

  • I think that the idea of a home server is fantastic! I know many people who would rush out to get this product. Please sign me up for beta testing. Keep up the good work.

  • I think the home server is a great idea. Another technology called the UnRaid server (limetechnology.com) shows promise, but doesn't have the UI and software functionality.
