Cloud Intelligence Conference Follow Up from Anaheim, CA (March 13, 2012)

I had the opportunity to participate in the Cloud Intelligence Conference in Anaheim, CA on March 13, 2012.  I presented two sessions and part of the Keynote with Buck Woody (also with Microsoft).  I wanted to follow up and post my PowerPoint decks from my two break out sessions as well as provide links for the downloads and resources I mentioned during my sessions.

Since there tends to be a lot of confusion on what Cloud computing really is, I am including a recap below.

• Public cloud
  • The cloud infrastructure is made available to the general public or a large industry group and is owned by an organization selling cloud services.
• Private cloud
  • The cloud infrastructure is operated solely for an organization. It may be managed by the organization or a third party and may exist on premises or off premises.
• Hybrid cloud
  • The cloud infrastructure is a composition of two or more clouds (private and public) that remain unique entities but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability (e.g., cloud bursting for load-balancing between clouds).  This also includes connecting a Public Cloud solution with on premises infrastructure such as Active Directory even if there is no Private Cloud.

Keep in mind that Virtualization is only a component of Cloud Computing.  The real “magic sauce” is in the automation and self service that helps IT be more efficient and provide more of a value add to the organization.  This helps the organization move beyond just Iaas, Paas and Saas to IT as a Service.
