I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1.

I am on a small home-based LAN, my internet connection going through a DSL router.

My computer won't go for updates nor will it ping host names via command line interface, but my internet browser is working.

From cmd:

Can send/receive ping packets to IPs ofcomputers on LAN.

Can send/receive ping packets to IP of default gateway/DNS server

Can send/receive ping packets to external website IP.

Can-NOT send/receive internal/external host NAMES.

This leads me to believe it is a DNS problem.

Now, a few Services won't run. Below are the services and the error messages I get from Services and from CMD..

Automatic Update

From Services:

Could not start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer.

Error 0x8007277a: The requested service provider could not be loaded or initialised.

From cmd:

System error 10106 has occurred.

The requested service provider could not be loaded or initialized.

Background Intelligent Transfer System

From Services:

Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service on Local Computer. FOr more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code -2147014790.

From Event Viewer:

The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with service-specific error 2147952506 (0x8007277A).

From cmd:

A service specific error occurred: 2147952506.

IPSEC Services

From Services:

Could not start the IPSEC Services service on Local COmputer.

Error 10106: The requested service provider could not be loaded or initialised.

From cmd:

System error 10106 has occurred.

Net Logon

From Services:

Could not start the Net Logon service on Local Computer.

Error 10106: The requested service provider could not be loaded or initialized.

From cmd:

System error 10106 has occurred.

Also, I tried running System integrity Check and Repair 'SFC', but it won't run. :(

Next, I tried installing Microsoft Fixit tool from the Microsoft website, it wouldn't install.

Now, I would guess that these programs aren't running because of this basic DNS problem.

I would very grateful if anyone helps resolve this problem. I want to install the latest updates for my OS.

Thank you,

Austin

It gives the option to rollback but if you click on it it just reboots the same as clicking on Windows 7. I have tried sevearl suggestions from many forums but none have worked.
