If you’re looking for a great second-screen experience to pair with an awesome television show, then look no further than the AMC Story Sync app for “The Walking Dead.”
The app allows you to join fellow fans online for snap polls, cool trivia and exclusive video while watching the premiere broadcast of the latest season four episode of AMC's “The Walking Dead.”
Here’s how it works: A few minutes before 9 p.m. PT every Sunday night, I power up my Surface, open up the AMC Story Sync app and watch the little timer in the corner of the screen tick down to zero. That’s when the sync begins.
The sync always starts with the Prediction Poll: “Who kills the most walkers this episode?” I typically go with one of the show’s main protagonists, Michonne, because she’s pretty much always at the forefront of the action, and she’s pretty handy with a samurai sword. My wife? She usually picks Daryl, and who can blame her? You just don’t mess with a guy who walks around with a crossbow strapped to his back.
While the show is renowned for its special effects, I actually find the moral choices that the characters have to make every episode just as compelling. In one recent episode, Rick and Carol happen across two young (and relatively naïve) survivors of the zombie apocalypse and have to decide whether to send them to a dangerous area to help forage for food and medicine. Just as the scene ends, a poll question pops up and asks viewers whether Rick and Carol’s choices are “tactically right and moral,” “tactically wrong and moral,” “tactically right but immoral” or “tactically wrong and immoral.” These questions almost always spark a debate between me and my wife, which is part of what makes the app experience so fun. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil the story for you by revealing the young survivors’ fates.
Another one of my favorite features is the instant replay video. Basically, nearly every episode of “The Walking Dead” has at least one major action scene where the survivors take on a horde of “walkers.” In many cases, the show then cuts to a commercial break and the Story Sync app replays the video of the survivors battling it out with the undead. Last week’s video: “The Governor escapes the nursing home.” Or, does he? :)
Then there are the flashback photos and videos to earlier episodes, usually a moment in time when a major character had to make a life-or-death decision that either helped save lives or got someone else killed. In the most recent story sync, there was a flashback video to season three, episode eight, when Michonne and the Governor fight. It’s a great fight, by the way. Someone loses an eye.
Also, the app will test your memory and knowledge of the show by presenting you with trivia questions about events from the past. Here’s a trivia question from the latest story sync: In Season 3, Rick is told the Governor’s wife died from – 1. A car crash 2. Lung cancer 3. Drowning 4. A walker bite. Do you recall the right answer?
Download the AMC Story Sync app and be sure to tune in at 9 p.m. PT Sunday to catch the next episode and join in the fun with other fans.
