Read this!

I’ve seen numerous newsgroup customers report that they can’t restore files from a file-based backup. In this post I cover two common problems, their causes, and how to solve them.
“I tried to restore files from a backup but there are no files listed

re: Confused about restoring a file from a backup in Windows Vista?
After a warranty repaired Vista pc is shipped back, it is factory imaged, and the backup directory (complete with mediaid.bin file) is copied to the desktop of the returned pc, Vista's recovery wizard still won't recognize the file as a backup.

Interestingly, it does recognize it on the network shared drive where it was stored originally.

And what should one do about the permissions? The new pc has the same name and same user account name, but still throws up a security error and one is forced to restore without the permissions...is this a guid problem? What can one do?

So far I'm unimpressed--backup and restore must be easy if people are to be expected to use them. PC's are just reliable enough to let it slip for a few years, and then....BAM...

Right now I'm using Mozy.com online backup for my XP pc's. This Vista I should have done the same before sending back for repair but thought I would try the built-in backup. Now I regret it!
