Be Aware of Message Default Limit Changes When Upgrading Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003

In Exchange 2003 some of the default settings were changed to tighten security. One of these settings is the sending and receiving message size settings. In Exchange 2000, no default size was set, but in Exchange 2003 the Sending message size and Receiving message size settings for the Exchange organization are set to 10240 KB. This default setting applies to new installations, or upgrades from Exchange 2000 in which no default size was set. During an upgrade if you have customized...

Use a custom Pocket IE start page

I love using my Pocket PC with its wireless LAN card to read my work e-mail at meetings. But, for various reasons, I don't use Pocket Inbox. Instead, I use Outlook Mobile Access and Outlook Web Access. And, instead of making a Favorites link, I created my own Pocket Internet Explorer start page. This way, I can access all my favorite links (not just Outlook Mobile Access and Outlook Web Access) when I open Internet Explorer. Here's how I did it. In Notepad , create a web page...

"I'll have some transaction log files for breakfast" day

With viruses spreading quick out there today, we had several cases where Exchange transaction logs got either deleted, quarantined or "cured" by file-level anti-virus software that is running on Exchange servers... the result is a bad thing... stores down, transaction logs missing. In some cases the only thing you can do is go back to the last backup if one that is good is available. Otherwise - you are looking at possible repair (= data loss) + Isinteg (maybe 2-3 times) + mandatory...

Don't want to be bothered by your phone during a meeting?

If you’re lucky enough to own a Windows Mobile-powered Smartphone (like the Motorola MPx200 ), there’s one cool little function that isn’t altogether obvious. Like most handsets, Smartphones have various profiles between which you can switch (Normal, Silent, Meeting, that kind of thing). You can see which profile you’ve currently selected on the home screen, and can change it by moving the cursor on the home screen down to the Profile line and hitting the select button. When you...

What is DomainPrep and Why DomainPrep the Root Domain?

What is DomainPrep? Why does Exchange recommend running DomainPrep on the Root Domain if there are no Exchange servers or users in that domain? I have been asked these questions so frequently I thought I’d do a post on it. I know DomainPrep is a little mysterious to many people so let me quickly explain what DomainPrep is and does. DomainPrep does all the tasks for Exchange Setup which require Domain Admin rights to accomplish. These tasks are: Create two groups;...

    Greg Bolles' Biography

I've been developing software for quite a range of applications for almost 19 years now. The first part of my career was firmly entrenched in real-time embedded systems, developing such technology as fly-by-wire flight control systems and electrocardiograph machines. Since coming to Microsoft, most of the projects that I’ve worked on have gravitated toward mobility. My first project was a data pager, then the first Microsoft PocketPC.When I'm not having fun here at Microsoft...

Active/Passive Behavior on clusters with more than two Nodes

Active/Passive configurations are enforced in clusters with more than two nodes (more than two Exchange nodes in Exchange 2003). This means that the scaling and monitoring limitations required for two-node Active/Active do not apply to clusters with more than two nodes. In clusters with more than two nodes, the interface prevents creating additional EVS such that there would not be at least one passive node. Exchange clusters with more than two nodes also prevent multiple EVS...

We recently added a new page to the Exchange community website, that has pictures and bios of our MVPs: http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/community/mvp/default.mspx Several of the Exchange MVPs also run Exchange blogs, see the details on the above page or click on the links to the right. - KC Lemson P.S. You can meet them, but you can't see anything above their foreheads. Apparently that's forbidden :-)
