As regards managing Exchange Online mailboxes attached to hybrid
accounts, is anyone from Microsoft able to say whether there will be a
simple set of tools for this, or is the current rather ridiculous system
of requiring a full Exchange server going to continue to be required?

@MOdette you can use the Windows Update MiniTool to selectively install
updates. It works with updates like it was in Win2012R2 and before -
select just updates what you need, download & install. Using it
successfully for years.
