    Jeg har en god nyhet og en dårlig nyhet. Den gode er at Hyper-V Recovery Manager nå er tilgjengelig i en «preview». Den dårlige er at den ikke er tilgjengelig for oss i Norge enda. Enn så lenge må vi sikle på produktet og lese hva andre finner ut og synes.

    Kort fortalt vil Hyper-V Recovery Manager leve i Azure. Herfra vil den fra en «tredje lokasjon» kunne administrere og orkestrere Hyper-V Replica (inkludert ikke planlagt failover, planlagt failover og test av failover). Er det ikke flott?

    Microsoft recently made available a preview service, Hyper-V Recovery Manager (HVRM). This is a hybrid service that leverages the high ground of the Azure public cloud in a smart way. HRVM manages the replication of your primary data center to your disaster recovery (DR) site. HVRM is a service for Windows Azure customers that appears in the Windows Azure Customer Portal after you sign up for the service. From the portal, you can perform emergency, on-demand, and test failovers of your infrastructure to the DR site. You can achieve excellent DR readiness protecting virtual machine (VM) workloads at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional approaches.

  • Er løsningen din støttet?

    Heldigvis har teknologi og løsninger blitt såpass bra at de for det meste bare fungerer. Kun unntaksvis er det behov for støtte av en karakter som krever at selve løsningen med alle enkeltkomponentene er offisielt støttet («supportert»). Selv om mye er blitt bedre, er det fortsatt slik at produsenten gjør feil som må rettes opp, feilkonfigurasjon forkommer og alle kombinasjoner er kanskje ikke testet og fungerer like bra sammen (spesielt når løsningen består av komponenter fra forskjellige produsenter). Når man havner i en slik situasjon der man trenger hjelp, hva er det verste som kan skje? Det er kanskje at man får beskjed om at løsningen ikke er støttet og hjelpen stopper opp.

    Hvorfor er produsenten så opptatt av at løsningen skal være støttet? Svaret er sammensatt og komplisert, men det handler først og fremst om at produsenten må ha noe som er konstant og sikkert (dvs. testet og funnet i orden). Det blir på samme måten som at snekkeren må stille krav til mureren, med tanke på grunnmuren, for at han skal kunne ta ansvar for huset han skal bygge på toppen.

    For å være så sikker som mulig på at grunnmuren er som den skal, har Microsoft og våre infrastrukturpartnere i årevis testet så mange kombinasjoner som mulig. Denne testingen er gjort for å avlaste kundene, slik at feil kan rettes opp før løsningene settes i produksjon. Tanken er at løsningen som settes i produksjon allerede er testet og funnet i orden. Hvis det er feil som ikke allerede er avdekket, så rettes disse opp. Dette er en av pilarene som gjør det mulig å kombinere komponenter fra forskjellige produsenter og samtidig være trygg på at man får hjelp hvis det oppstår feil.

    Microsoft har logoprogram og «Failover Cluster Validation Tests» osv. som sikrer (så langt det er mulig) at maskinvaren i løsningen fungerer med for eksempel Windows Server 2012. Følger man disse prinsippene er også løsningen støttet.

    I dagens datarom blir for det meste Windows Server ikke lenger installert direkte på fysisk maskinvare, men på toppen av en Hypervisor. Hvordan sikrer Microsoft at Windows Server fungerer så godt som mulig på virtuell maskinvare? Svaret er som for fysisk maskinvare, vi tester.

    Den virtuelle maskinvaren som Microsoft desidert tester mest, er selvfølgelig vår egen Hyper-V. Vi tester ALLE våre produkter og løsninger da dette er plattformen våre utviklerne bruker for utvikling og test. Vi sikrer på den måten at alle våre produkter ikke bare fungerer, men også skalerer, yter og er mulig å feilsøke på nettopp denne virtuelle maskinvaren.

    Hva med virtuell maskinvare fra andre leverandører, blir det gjort testing for å sikre at for eksempel Windows Server fungerer så godt som mulig på disse? Svaret er selvfølgelig ett stort JA. Microsoft har til og med et eget program for å sikre at all testingen som gjøres, er tilgjengelig for kunder og partnere.

    Hva er status for de mest brukte løsningene i markedet (i tillegg til Hyper-V som i Norge har 35% andel i Q412 - IDC)?

    VMware: vSphere ESXi 5.0 (Update 1) er per. 23.05.2013 testet med Windows Server 2008 R2.
    Det vil
    si at vSphere 5.1 ikke er testet i SVVP-programmet og Windows Server 2012 er ikke testet med noen versjoner av vSphere i SVVP-programmet.

    Citrix: XenServer 6.1 er per. 23.05.2013 testet med Windows Server 2008 R2.
    Det vil si at Windows Server 2012 ikke er testet med noen versjoner av XenServer i SVVP-programmet.

    Hva betyr dette i praksis for de kundene som benytter disse kombinasjonene? Så lenge alt fungerer, så har dette liten eller ingen konsekvens. Det er når problemene oppstår at moroa begynner. Trenger man hjelp av Microsoft vil vi hjelpe til så langt det er økonomisk forsvarlig, eller som de sier over dammen: «…Microsoft will continue to provide support for Windows Server 2012 on VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1 and XenServer 6.1 on a commercially reasonable basis and may require the customer to reproduce the issue on certified physical hardware or Microsoft Hyper-V…»

    La oss derfor håpe at de mest aktuelle løsningene så fort som mulig blir testet og funnet i orden, slik at kunder og partnere kan «sove godt om natten».

    Hva kan dere gjøre for å få fart på prosessen? Ta kontakt med din leverandør/produsent og be om at løsningen blir sertifisert, alternativt få skriftlige garantier (en selger lover det meste når han må) for at du får hjelp og støtte hvis problemer skulle oppstå.

  • Capacity Planner for Hyper-V Replica

    Capacity Planner for Hyper-V Replica er nå tilgjengelig. Denne simulerer replikering av eksisterende virtuelle maskiner, for så å gi et estimat på infrastrukturbehovene (CPU, minne, disk IO, diskplass og nettverk).

    Verktøyet vil gi estimater på blant annet:

    • Estimert ekstra CPU og minnebehov for primær- og sekundærhost.
    • Estimert ekstra disk IO og lagringsplass på primærhost under full kopi og normal operasjon (delta-replikering)
    • Estimert ekstra disk IO og lagringsplass på sekundærhost (kun siste recovery point eller hvis man ønsker flere)
    • Gjennomsnittlig nødvendig nettverksbåndbredde og MaximumActiveTransfers (maks «parallelle» VMer)

    With the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) capability in the cloud, such as the one offered by the Windows Azure platform, it becomes possible to deploy virtual machines (VM) that host AD domain controller.

    Whilst such an approach could be more than appropriate for specific workloads on IaaS platforms like a SharePoint environment, the Microsoft vision for the cloud consists in recreating a similar identity service, but one that is optimized to support cloud applications and support modern protocols.

    Windows Azure Active Directory (Windows Azure AD or AAD) is AD reimagined for the cloud, designed to solve for you the new identity and access challenges that come with the shift to a cloud-centric, multi-tenant world.

    Windows Azure AD can be truly seen as an Identity Management as a Service (IDMaaS) cloud multi-tenant service that provides a robust and comprehensive cloud identity platform architected to operate in the cloud with high scale, high availability, and integrated disaster recovery. This goes far beyond taking AD and simply running it within a VM in a hosted environment such as the IaaS capability of Windows Azure: Windows Azure AD is definitely different than running AD in a Windows Azure VM.

  • Hyper-V Replica – litt tekniske detaljer

    Windows Server 2012 med Hyper-V har en skog av ny funksjonalitet, en av de viktigste (etter min mening) er Hyper-V Replica.

    Med Hyper-V Replica kan man asynkront replikere virtuelle maskiner fra en Hyper-V host/cluster til en annen Hyper-V host/cluster, gjerne over avstand (lag-3 eller internett). Det beste er at denne funksjonaliteten er inkludert (på samme måte som Hyper-V i seg selv er) i Windows Server OS-lisensen (som de fleste av dere allerede har).

    I den siste tiden har jeg vært involvert i design av relativt store Hyper-V miljø (20+ hoster) med flere tusen virtuelle maskiner. Når vi snakker om så mange virtuelle maskiner blir administrasjon, overvåkning og dimensjonering noe man må grave litt i. I denne prosessen har jeg etter hvert gravd fram en del nyttig informasjon herfra og derfra som jeg tenkte kunne være greit å samle på ett sted, derfor sitter jeg her å skriver. Enjoy.

    Hvordan replikeringen egentlig fungerer
    Hvert 5. minutt genereres en ny loggfil (.hrl) på primærhost. All skriv gjøres i parallell til VMen (.VHDX) og loggfilen. Hvert 5. minutt (når en ny loggfil er generert) blir den gamle filen komprimert (default på, men kan disables) og sendes over nettverket til sekundærhost. Når fila er trygt over, spilles dataene over i target VMen (.VKDX’) og target VMen er oppdatert.  

    Det er mulig å ta vare på et fritt valgt antall Recovery Points på sekundærhosten (det er anbefalt å begrense antallet). I eksemplet under er det valgt å ta vare på 2x. Dataene som kommer fra primærhosten spilles over i det nyeste snapshotet (i stedet for direkte i VMen). En gang pr. time (kan ikke endres) genereres det ett nytt snapshot, og det eldste snapshotet spilles over i target VMen.

    Administrasjon av failover og failback
    Det er relativt enkelt å feile VMer over og tilbake ved å benytte Hyper-V Manager eller Cluster Manager, men det gjøres pr. VM, i større miljø med hundrevis av VMer blir dette litt tungt. Løsningen i disse miljøene blir å benytte PowerShell eller aller helst System Center Orchestrator. Det er også mulig å integrere med Service Manager sin selvbetjeningsportal for selvbetjent Disaster Recovery.

    Kontroll på navn og katalog
    På sekundærhosten defineres én katalog som de replikerte VMene skal havne i. I denne katalogen vil det automatisk genereres kataloger med ganske obskure navn (VMens GUID).

    Hvis det er ønskelig å forandre navn eller flytte VMene til en annen disk/katalog, gjøres dette ved hjelp av Live Storage migrering.

    Hyper-V Replica benytter snapshot ganske utstrakt på sekundærhosten (hvis det er ønskelig å ta vare på Recovery Points). Snapshot-backup på denne siden vil forårsake problemer, derfor er dette hverken anbefalt eller støttet. Snapshot-backup på primærhosten vil fungere og er anbefalt og støttet.

    Status på replikeringen kan hentes fra Hyper-V Manager eller Cluster Manager.

    Man kan benytte Performance Monitor som har egne tellere for Hyper-V Replica (Average Replication Latency, Average Replication Size, Last Replication Size, Network Bytes Recv, Network Bytes Sent, Replication Count, Replication Latency, Resynchronized Bytes).

    Microsoft Private Cloud Fast Track Guidance Set

    The Microsoft® Private Cloud Fast Track Program is a joint effort between Microsoft and its hardware partners. The goal of the program is to help organizations decrease the time, complexity, and risk of implementing private clouds. The program provides:

    The customer has the choice of building the solution by using the reference implementation guidance or purchasing a reference implementation from a Microsoft hardware partner that couples the guidance with optimized hardware configurations. Although both options decrease the time, cost, and risk in implementing private clouds, purchasing a reference implementation from a Microsoft hardware partner will result in the fastest, lowest-risk solution. This is because in this option, all of the hardware and software best practice implementation choices have been determined by Microsoft and its hardware partners’ engineering teams. As a result, this will often also prove to be the most inexpensive option.

    The private cloud model provides much of the efficiency and agility of cloud computing in addition to the increased control and customization that is achieved through dedicated private resources. With the Microsoft Private Cloud Fast Track Program, Microsoft and its hardware partners can help provide organizations with the control and flexibility required to reap the potential benefits of the private cloud.

    ·         Provides a quick, low-risk option for VMware customers to evaluate Hyper-V

    ·         Converts VMware VMs, virtual disks and configuration, (memory, virtual processor, etc.) from the source to Hyper-V

    ·         Uninstalls the VMware tools on the source VM and installs the Hyper-V Integration Services as appropriate

    ·         Includes an easy-to-use wizard-driven GUI simplifying VM conversion

     
    The current MVMC Beta supports converting virtual machines created with:
