Backing up of replica VMs using DPM

Ever since Hyper-V replication technology introduced in Windows 2012, many customers showed interest in leveraging DPM for backing up replica VMs instead of primary VMs. By backing up replica VMs, production servers are not burdened with the backup IO impact.  Considering the customer request, DPM and Hyper-V replication worked together to enable backup of Replica VMs. The technology to make this happen and its nuances are further discussed in this Hyper-V Replica blog article. On the whole, it includes the changes to the platform that ensure crash-consistency of backups, and the appropriate retry mechanism in DPM to ensure a high success rate.

Testing and Results

The backup of Replica VMs by DPM has been validated with internal tests involving 2 servers with different VM mixes that are backed up by a DPM server(below).

We measured the actual number of backup points created per VM in DPM, and matched that with our expectation of 16 recovery points per VM for the 48 hour test duration. The results of the test were extremely positive, with close to 100% success rate of the backup jobs.

Takeaways

  1. DPM can backup replica VMs.
  2. DPM protection of a replica VM can guarantee only crash-consistency.

  • Thanks for the info, I am in the process of setting up Replica backups using DPM 2012 R2; My environment;

Primary site - Windows server 2012 R2 datacenter, hyper-v Host cluster w\16 nodes. Using 16 CSV 1TB each.
Secondary site - will be the exact same setup.

Will use 2 node hyper-v cluster using direct attached storage (100TB), with 2 virtual machines "DPM 2012 R2" CU1

I have a small test area and am now backing up 2 replicated vm's.

I started testing but still awaiting the Re-RELEASE of DPM 2012 R2 Cumulative update 2, any idea when this will be re-released?

    Thanks

  • AHA, reading the DPM Blog, it's been re-released last week 5/21. :)

Also running into a major issue with failover cluster and DPM, backing up over 500VM's with DPM. If you failover the vm's, the DPM backup fails with change tracking error and need to run a consistency check, which is too time consuming. I've opened a case with microsoft, but i find it amazing i am the only customer with this issue. Servers are well patch, it even occured with setup above.

  • Hi,
Can you send out email to nkolli @ microsoft.com?

  • Neela, I will email you.

I'v setup my Secondary DPM Server and was succesful with backing up the DPM database & one virtual server from my primary DPM server. The best part the secondary dpm server is in another location - 100 miles away from primary and was able to backup 24GB VM in 3 minutes.

Looking for documentation on the secondary setup - more details.

    Thanks
