System Center Data Protection Manager

Those of you running DPM 2007 SP1 today know that we offer a “Bare Metal Recovery” (BMR) capability through the DPM System Recovery Tool (SRT) for Windows Server 2003 machines.

However, the SRT model of BMR doesn’t work well with Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2, so we chose to not significantly re-write SRT for those platforms.

Instead, the in-box capability of image level backups and system state protection that is included with WS08 does a good job.  But what makes it great is to centrally manage the execution of those System State and Bare Metal Recovery backups.

To facilitate this in DPM 2007 SP1, we published a whitepaper with all of the pertinent steps.  Some of you may have downloaded an earlier version of a similar whitepaper, but we’ve updated it as of November 2009, so we encourage you download the latest guidance.

  • Hello Jason,

I've already sent to the engineer who contact us on the case about the document that it may be more convenient to remove "move" command from the script. It than can be recovered easy from the network location just by booting from installation media and selecting recovery. But we are still conducting the test in our environment.

BTW, will the same troubles remain in DPMv3? =)

  • Greetings Jason,

I'm in the process of testing the scripts and configuration as detailed in the document. For some reason the script WILL work if I manually run it from the "C:\ServerBackupScripts" folder but when it incorporated into the "ScriptingConfig.XML files "PreBackupScipt" function it simply will not delete the previous %COMPUTERNAME% folder and create new .VHD files.

The only thing I've changed in the script is this:

    WAS: "Set BAKUP_TARGET=\\%COMPUTERNAME%\ServerBackup$"

NOW: "Set BAKUP_TARGET=\\BAK_Server_001\ServerBackup$" (BAK_Server_001 IS the actual server name).

I've created the protection group in DPM and set the ServerBackup$ as a protection member. (and only member).

I verify whether or not the backup occurred by  checking a zero-length text file on each volume that has the date and time as part of the filename. I modify the filename each time before the recovery point event starts.

(I've setup mutiple recovery point times since I'm still in Test & Eval mode with this method(

Any light or ideas you have would be grateful.

    Thanks,
