Yesterday I mentioned that SQL Server 2005 SP3 is now supported for SMS 2003 and ConfigMgr 2007 but as an interesting side note did you know that if you move to SP3 of SQL 2005 you're still not at the latest patch level? There's actually a Cumulative Update out for SP3 so you should install SP3 and then CU1 to be completely up to date (Note: This cumulative update is not required for supportability with the previously mentioned products).
Check this out from KB959195:
Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 contains only hotfixes that were released in Cumulative Update 10 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 and Cumulative Update 11 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. These hotfixes are not included in SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3. CU1 for SQL 2005 SP3 is only intended as a post service pack rollup for SP2 CU10 and SP2 CU11 customers who plan to upgrade to SP3 and still keep the hotfixes from SQL 2005 SP2 CU10 and SQL 2005 SP2 CU11. No new hotfixes have been included in this Cumulative Update other than the hotfixes that were already released in CU10 and CU11.
So if you want to run the latest and greatest then be sure you grab KB959195 in addition to SP3.

You posted that sccm 2007 now supports SQL service pack 3 in Jan however when I attempt to install SCCM using the SP1 or sp2 media (I have all media) it fails precheck and if i attempt an install fails as it reuires SP2. Is there a method for doing a initial install to a SQL sp 3 instance ? Or does this only work on a upgrade of SQL SP to SP3 post SCCM install to SP2 ?
My prod sccm sql server requires sql sp3 as sql sp2 does not function on hardware that does not have aa power of 2 number of cores. This is a big issue for me.
