MDM… BYOD… acronyms for some of the hottest buzzwords in IT these days.  As I’ve had a chance to talk with various customers over the last several months, it’s clear that organizations are embracing the bring-your-own-device philosophy and that mobile device management is a key piece of being able to do that securely and effectively.  Time and time again, I’ve heard how much customers love the idea of unified device management – the “single pane of glass” that Configuration Manager and Windows Intune provide for managing both cloud-connected mobile devices and on-premises PC’s in a consistent manner.  Interestingly, another key theme I’ve heard from many of these customers is that while they really want to start taking advantage of the mobile device management features that Microsoft provides, they aren’t quite ready to do a full deployment of System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager, and in some cases, it may be many months before they’re ready to do so.  For those of you who find yourselves in that same position, I have great news for you…you don’t need to wait for a full-blown deployment of Configuration Manager to take advantage of what we have to offer for mobile devices!

Whether you have Configuration Manager 2007 and have a bunch of migration planning to do, or you have a 3rd party competitor’s product for management of your on-premises PC’s, or even if you have no management solution currently in place, it’s easy to set up a single server deployment of System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager and connect it to Windows Intune for full management of your mobile devices.  We’ve recently published a solution guide on TechNet that walks you through the steps required to do this.  While the guide is written around the Configuration Manager 2007 to Configuration Manager 2012 migration scenario, the guide is equally applicable to any scenario where you just want to get up and running quickly with mobile device management using Configuration Manager and Windows Intune.  And the great thing about it is that once you’re ready to fully deploy System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager for management of your on-premises PC’s, the first step is already done.  You can leverage what you have in place to build out the rest of your environment without having to throw it away and start over.
