Thanks for the post. Well written and very helpful to me.

Without "File Server VSS Agent Service" installed on the file server I was not able to "add volume ..."

in Diskshadow. It would fail with "The provider does not support volume shadow copies for this volume in this context ..." error. Then I enabled the role on the file server but it still failed. It worked after rebooting the file server. Not sure if I waited enough or reboot is needed. Just sharing my experience.

Hi! thanks for the post, very helpful, but, we have just installed some Hyper-V servers in a cluster using an SMB file share to store the VMs but the backups were failing.

We searched for fssprov.dll on the Hyper-V servers to no avail, so seems that isn't installed on all windows 2012 editions.

How can we get the provider on a Hyper-V server?

I know that I could go to the "full" Windows route, but we want to boot from USB and be smallish as possible

If you are using IP addresses, DNS reverse lookup must be available. I will update the blog post to reflect this, thanks.

Hey, thanks for the detailed blog. But I have a question, have you tried diskshadow adding share path having Ipv6 address? I had tried it, but it doesnt seem to work.
