I always get asked when is the next IT Pro in-person event taking place. I want to give everyone a heads up that we are very close to having all the registration links for the West Region IT Camps available for the rest of this calendar year. With that said, there are a few that are already available and I want to make sure to get the information out to you now since the first few are taking place at the end of September.

    Cloud OS Signature Series

This series of events takes place in 4 major cities in West Region – Irvine, CA, Seattle, WA, Denver, CO and San Francisco, CA. These events start with a keynote and then breaks out into three different tracks. The IT Professional Track is where our IT Camp content is being delivered. If you want to see the entire schedule for the day, please go the the Series Landing Page. I am including the dates and direct IT Professional track links for the four cities in this series below:

    Event Description

Windows Server 2012 has been Released to Manufacturing (RTM’d) with general availability on September 4th. This latest release of the Windows Server operating system, which has been heralded by industry analysts as the most impressive update to Windows Server since Windows Server 2000, includes sweeping enhancements across key areas: Virtualization, Storage, Networking and Management. In addition, we’ve also recently released a Preview of the new Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) capabilities in our Windows Azure cloud offering.

Please join us at an IT Camp near you for a hands-on technical discussion about implementing these new capabilities: Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, Shared-Nothing Live Migration, Storage Pools and Windows Azure Virtual Machines. Bring your own laptop (requirements below) to participate in Hands-on Lab activities. Stay tuned for additional IT Camps this year where we’ll also target the new Networking and Management features.

To participate in the afternoon hands-on lab session, you will need to bring your own computer (laptop preferred) with the following minimum configuration:

    • 4GB RAM (8 GB preferred)
    • At least 40 GB of free disk space (75 GB preferred)
    • x64 compatible processor with hardware assisted virtualization (Intel VT or AMD-V technology)
    • Installed OS of Windows Server 2012 (Preferred), Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 8
    • NO Drive encryption technology (Bitlocker or 3rd party)
    • Download Windows Server 2012 ISO: http://aka.ms/hwws2012
    • Download additional files from: http://aka.ms/cloudositcamp

    Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V

With the introduction of Windows Server 2012, Hyper-V has definitely matured and will become a major force in the Hypervisor space. As virtualization becomes the norm in our customer’s datacenters, IT Professionals are becoming more concerned with Fault Tolerance, flexibility and scalability of the virtualization infrastructure. Needless to say, Microsoft has focused on these areas in Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V and in this session, we will get into the details of the following key enhancements:

    • Scalability
    • Fault Tolerance with Hyper-V Replica
    • Flexibility with Shared Nothing Live Migrations (VMs and Storage)
    • Flexibility with Hyper-V over SMB

    Windows Server 2012 Storage

One of the most common uses of Windows Servers is for File and Print Services. Windows Server 2012 has huge improvements in the Storage capabilities as well. Storage Spaces happens to be one of these new capabilities that allows an organization to group different storage devices into a pool from which to create thinly provisioned volumes. Another new capability is data de-duplication that allows for storage savings by reclaiming physical space use on the hard drive by multiple copies of the same file. This session will focus on these two enhancements as well as continuously available file shares.

    Overview of Windows Azure IaaS

When Windows Azure first released a few years ago, it was our Platform as a Service offering in the public cloud space. This too, has matured and we recently released a preview of Infrastructure as a Service offering in Windows Azure. This new offering allows an organization to host a Virtual Machine with various Operating Systems (including Linux) and different applications such as Active Directory Domain Controllers or SharePoint Server as an example. These VMs in Azure can also be connected with PaaS instances in Azure or on-premises infrastructure. This session will provide an overview of this new capability and how to get started.

    Hands On Labs

The Hands On Labs will focus on providing hands on experience configuring the different aspects of Windows Server 2012 that was discussed in the morning sessions as well as configuring IaaS capabilities in Windows Azure.

    Cheers!

Register for the Silicon Valley Code Camp–See Scott Guthrie and the Microstang!

I know this is more of a developery sort of thing, but developers write the cool stuff that runs on the platforms we all know and love.

The Silicon Valley Code Camp is coming up on October 6th and 7th in of course….Silicon Valley. According to the SVCC Website, there are currently *215* Sessions being made available from a who’s who of well known speakers. You might think that being in Silcon Valley that there wouldn’t be much that applies to the world of Microsoft, but there are actually a lot of great session being delivered that developers can leverage when working on a Windows platform -

We will even have our very own Scott Guthrie on site! He is delivering a two-part session -  “Windows Cloud Walkthrough” Sessions with Scott Guthrie. If you want to know what is going on with Microsoft and the cloud, there is no better person to hear it from than ScottGu.

Now I don’t want to take anything away from the great speakers and sessions that are going to be delivered, but I think the coolest part of the event will be seeing the Microsoft Mustang – the Microstang – a customized Ford Mustang complete with Windows 8 powered touch console, XBox 360, rear windshield projection screen and more….

    September WNUG User Group Meeting….

Our monthly User Group meeting will be held at the Lincoln Square Center in Bellevue, across from the Bellevue Square Mall at 6:00pm. The meeting will be held in Room 15104, (15th floor, room 104) at the Microsoft's office in Lincoln Square Center.

Due to the security requirements, non-Microsoft employees must be escorted to the building by a Microsoft employee. We will have a sign on the 2nd floor elevator with instructions and/or contact phone number.

Our guest speaker in September will be Steve Schwartz. The topic of his presentation is "Roadmap to the Cloud for Messaging, Collaboration, and Communications."

Steve is one of the leading industry experts in the cloud technologies. He started his cloud services business way before most of us ever heard the term “cloud computing”, over a decade ago. He is considered a pioneer in the Hosted Exchange business, having worked with Microsoft in 1999 on the very first project to document how to deliver Hosted Exchange 2000. In 2006, Steve started Chinook Communications to provide hosted Messaging, Collaboration, and Communications services utilizing the Microsoft cloud services platform.

In his presentation Steve will discuss the typical pain points companies are faced within IT and Telecommunications. These include issues around security, disaster recovery, reliability, leveraging new technology, and reducing costs. The session will then detail how leveraging the cloud for messaging, collaboration, and communications on a Microsoft platform can help address some of these common issues. Finally, the session will present a common roadmap for how to migrate to the cloud in a phased approach that minimizes user disruption. An approach that gradually phases in changes while having an immediate positive impact on the business by providing more effective communications at reduced costs.

    Steve’s bio is available here.

    Agenda:

    6:00pm-6:30pm: Welcome!

6:30pm-7:45pm: Roadmap to the Cloud for Messaging, Collaboration, and Communications

    7:45pm-8:00pm: Wrap-up

BootFests - Creating Bootable USB sticks….

    Good Day Folks!

I recently did a series of Bootfests and Installfests in the Western US. At these events, we talked about and then performed installs to customer machines for a variety of Microsoft Operating Systems. We had several options to work with and I want to provide more information here on what I did to build the USB memory sticks that we used and the different install methods we used.

    The USB Stick We Used

For the workshops, I provided a loaner 32gig USB Memory stick that was bootable. I configured it with the bits for Windows 8 and Windows 2012 so that we could move some files around and boot to install either operating system.

    USB Stick Configuration

To make the USB stick bootable, I performed the following steps -

Have available the installation media for your operation system (in this example I used Windows 8). If this is in .ISO form, extract everything from the .ISO and place into an easy to find folder. More specifically, you need to ensure you have access to the \boot folder. In this folder you will have the bootsect.exe application which we will use later in the prep

    Insert Stick in available port

Open an Admin level CMD prompt

    > diskpart

    > list disk   (to identify the disk number of the USB stick. In my example below, it is Disk 6)

    image

    > sel disk #   (where # is the Disk # of your USB stick.)

    > list disk   (to confirm we selected the correct disk #)

    image

*Warning* This next command will wipe out a disk without confirmation! Do not execute without ensuring you have selected the correct disk!

    > clean

    > cre par pri    (creates a primary partition on the selected disk)

    > sel part 1   (selects partition 1 on the selected disk)

    > active   (sets selected partition to be the active partition)

    > format fs=ntfs quick   (performs a quick format of the active partition)

    > assign   (assigns a drive letter)

    > exit

    Leave your CMD prompt open

Open My Computer or Disk Management and identify the drive letter of the USB stick

Remember the installation media and the /boot folder above? At the CMD prompt, execute the following -

    > <path>\boot\bootsect.exe /nt60 <drive letter of USB stick:>   (where <path> is the directory you dropped your installation media in)

    image

Once the bootcode is updated on the USB stick, you can now copy all of the installation media files to the USB stick. It is then a simple matter of rebooting your machine, pressing whatever magic buttons are required by your particular computer so you can boot to USB and then proceed with installation as normal!

In our classes, some people noted that I  had some extra folders on my USB stick. Here is what the root of our USB sticks looked like -

    image

You will notice a folder called \NOMOVE in the root. This was just a reminder to me not to delete or move this directory when changing operating systems on the USB stick. In this folder I create additional folders for each operating system I would want to install from USB. I then copy all of the installation files from an .ISO or CD/DVD to the appropriately name OS folder. When I want to install a different OS from USB, I simply move all the files from the root (excluding NOMOVE) back to it’s OS folder. I then move all of the files from the OS folder I want to install over to the root.

    image

If you have a 16gig stick, you can get at least 3 different OS installs on the same stick.

    -Cheers!

BootFests and InstallFests Coming Soon (like…..REAL soon!)

I apologize for the short notice on these events folks, but I have some cool hands-on meetups that I am organizing for a few locations in my coverage area. If you are in Boise, Portland, Seattle (primarily Eastside), or San Francisco…read on!

Do you have a need to use more than one operating system on the same machine? Would you like to be able to check out an operating system before permanently installing it to a system? Would you like to provide better portability, better isolation, and tremendous ease of use to your existing dual or multi-boot environment? Would you just like to experience how to install a Windows operating system from scratch? Well.....This event is for you!

Chris Avis, Technical Evangelist with Microsoft Corporation is hosting a Bootfest/Installfest at local Microsoft offices over the next couple of months!

Depending on the location, the events will consist of a Bootfest + Installfest, or just an Installfest.

BootFest - (10a - 12noon) - We will introduce you to as well as walk you through the process of doing a "Boot to VHD" of a Microsoft operating system. This process allows us to take an operating system that was created with a virtualized environment (ie; Windows Server 2008 R2 running as a guest virtual machine on a Windows Hyper-V server) and boot that VHD file natively! The booted operating system has access to all of the native hardware and can actually be moved from machine to machine for portability. Since the resulting operating system and all installed applications as well as user data is stored in a single file, it is isolated from any other operating system(s) you have installed.

Installfest - (1p - 4pm) - For the Installfest, we will be providing the bits to install Windows Server 2012 natively or via "Boot to VHD" to hardware you provide (see hardware requirements below). We will also have a brief presentation introducing Windows Server 2012 and new features. There will also be plenty of time for Q&A if you have questions about Windows Server 2012 or anything else Microsoft related

For our Bootfest, we will provide Boot to VHD files to allow booting to one of the following Microsoft Operating Systems

    • Windows 8 Release Preview - Trial
    • Windows Server 2012 - Trial
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 - Trial

Please note - These are TRIAL versions and will expire after approximately 120 - 180 depending on the operating system. We do not recommend using these in production. Please use only for learning and training.

System Requirements for BootFest (Boot to VHD) -

    • Desktop or Laptop running Windows 7 (any version), Windows Server 2008 R2 (Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter), Windows 8
    • 4 gigs of RAM
    • BIOS/CPU/Motherboard combo that supports, Intel/AMD Virtualization extensions and Data Execution Prevention
    • 20 gigs or more of free drive space

    ***Other VERY IMPORTANT qualifiers*** -

    • Boot to VHD will NOT work if your C:\ drive is encrypted with BitLocker or any other 3rd party disk/volume encryption.
    • Boot to VHD will not work if your C:\ drive is compressed using NTFS compression
    • Boot to VHD does not support booting to a VHD file stored on a remote network share or USB attached storage

    System Requirements for InstallFest -

    • Desktop or Laptop that you can install a clean operating system to (basically wipe it out and start fresh!)
    • 4 gigs of RAM
    • BIOS/CPU/Motherboard combo that supports, Intel/AMD Virtualization extensions and Data Execution Prevention
    • 20 gigs or more of free drive space

If you would like to attend, please register with one of the links below -

Do you want to have one of the first Windows 8 Apps in the Windows Store?

Do you have a great Windows 8 App idea?

Have you started writing a Windows 8 App and want some feedback?

As you likely know Windows 8 is coming in the near future. You can download, use it, and even develop apps for it today. At this point in time the Windows Store is not open for everyone to deploy, but we are looking for the first wave of great applications which highlight the power of Metro and Windows 8, especially those developers that want to get to market first and build the awareness and brand for their applications.

In order to submit your application today you need a token which is something I can help you get.

What do you need to do to get a token? Here are the key steps:

    1. Create a great application or game and get it ready.

    2. Let me know about it by contacting me via email – chris.avis@microsoft.com

    3. I’ll help you register so you can get your application through our Application Accelerator Labs where the app will get reviewed to confirm it is done and conforms to the Metro guidelines and certification requirements.

This is a great opportunity to not only be first to market with your app, but also to get feedback from a Microsoft Services Engineer to make your app great. If you are serious about creating an application this is a chance that you probably don’t want to pass up.

In addition, our team is holding a series of events and office hours to help you – we want to make sure you have what you need to be successful. You can come learn more about how to build apps for Windows 8 or show up and build your app with one of our evangelists or others in your community available to help you if you need it. You can find more information about our events and availability at…

    clip_image001

Microsoft IT Showcase is pleased to announce the publication of how Microsoft IT Uses File Classification Infrastructure to Help Secure Personally Identifiable Information, which discusses how you can use file classification to achieve compliance goals and implement FCI to ensure proper protection. Many thanks to Nir Ben Zvi and Olav Opedal for their expertise, knowledge, and dedication in developing this comprehensive video.

Microsoft IT Uses File Classification Infrastructure to Help Secure Personally Identifiable Information

Learn how Microsoft Information Technology (IT) used File Classification Infrastructure (FCI) to create a solution to automatically classify, manage, and protect sensitive data, including personally identifiable information and financial information. Using the new FCI-based solution, Microsoft IT can obtain file-level details about content sensitivity while reducing misclassification of personally identifiable information from 30% to 3%. The new solution enables risk mitigation for sensitive data by using automatically applied controls. Ultimately, this solution helped Microsoft IT achieve industry best practices for regulatory compliance.

We had great success with the IT Camps we started in March! Thank you all for the support of the events. We have a new series of IT Camps coming up in May and June. The will be essentially the same format with a few subtle tweaks:

The events will start at 8:30 AM and end at 4 PM (versus 8 AM – 12 PM)
We will have a Hands-On component as part of the afternoon agenda
You get to help pick the content / topic of discussion for a good portion of the presentation slots (and maybe even get to present yourself if you want)
We will only have two “official” presentations – one from Microsoft and one from Vision (Double-Take)

To participate in the afternoon session, you will need to bring your own computer (laptop preferred) with the following minimum configuration:

•x64 compatible processor with Intel VT or AMD-V technology
•OS that is either Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server “8” Beta
    •4GB RAM (8 GB preferred)
•At least 40GB of free disk space (75 GB preferred)

•It is also important that the machine you use for the hands on sessions does *NOT* have any encryption enabled (this applies to Bitlocker as well as ANY 3rd party encryption)

Just like the last round, we really want you to dive the open discussion we have at the IT Camps. To effectively do this, we need you to submit your suggestion for topics now. You can either email them directly to me or feel free to add a comment to this post. I look forward to your topic suggestions!

    Session Details
Our guest speaker will be Greg Lindsay. Greg is a technical writer for the Windows Server Networking documentation team at Microsoft. The topic of his presentation is "IP Address Management (IPAM) in Windows Server 2012." IPAM in Windows Server 2012 Beta is a new built-in framework for discovering, monitoring, auditing, and managing the IP address space used on a corporate network. IPAM provides for administration and monitoring of servers running Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name Service (DNS). IPAM includes:

    · DNS and DHCP server, zone, and scope discovery

    · Custom IP address display, reporting, and management

    · Audit of server configuration changes

    · IP address tracking

    · Monitoring and management of DHCP and DNS services

IPAM provides a single management platform for IP address administration on the network, replacing manual tools and scripts. IPAM also allows for optimized utilization and capacity planning, enables tracking and forecasting of IP address utilization, and provides reporting for forensics and change management.
