The Group Policy Preference Migration Tool (GPPMIG) is a console application designed to migrate PolicyMaker items to Group Policy preference items in the same or a different Group Policy object (GPO).
For users of PolicyMaker Standard Edition 2.x and PolicyMaker Share Manager, the Group Policy Preference Migration Tool (GPPMIG) is a console application designed to migrate PolicyMaker items to Group Policy preference items in the same or a different Group Policy object (GPO). Migration is necessary because PolicyMaker extensions can only edit PolicyMaker items, and Windows Server 2008 and the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) for Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 can only edit preference items. Also, PolicyMaker client-side extensions (CSEs) only process PolicyMaker items, and Group Policy preference CSEs only process preference items. GPPMIG does not migrate PolicyMaker Application items or Mail Profile items because Group Policy Preferences do not included client-side extensions for these item types. For information about how to use GPPMIG, see article 959963 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, How to Migrate PolicyMaker Items to Group Policy Preference Items Using the Group Policy Preference Migration Tool (GPPMIG), at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=155092.

Customizable, search-enabled Bing API-powered pages that replace dead-end 404s. Re-architected to maximize deployment ease and minimize impact on your server
Customize your 404 error pages with the Bing API Web Page Error Toolkit For large web sites with extensive amounts of content, 2 to 10 percent of traffic is looking for pages that either don’t exist or have been moved. Most web servers return a generic 404 error page or a sitemap when a user’s desired page cannot be found. These unhelpful pages often result in a dead end for users. With the re-architected, easily deployed Web Page Error Toolkit, you can create dynamic 404 pages that contain customized error messages along with search results seeded with relevant keywords to help your users move past the missing page and find the information they need. The Toolkit is a customizable ASP.net application that replaces the default error page on your IIS server. The process works as follows:
The Toolkit enables you to use the Bing API to return results for the specified domain and locale, control the number of results returned on your page, choose whether to offer spelling corrections, and customize your error message. You also have the option of choosing from several keyword extraction strategies that are included with the install, or providing your own implementation.

The Migration Tool helps developers to migrate their projects which use the non-WCF LOB adapters for BizTalk to use the WCF based equivalents from the BizTalk Adapter Pack 2.0
The WCF-based adapters shipped with the BizTalk Adapter Pack 2.0 are the recommended solutions to integrate various LOB systems with BizTalk Server. The Adapter Pack consists of LOB adapters for SAP, Siebel, Oracle DB, Oracle EBS, and SQL Server. They are built on the WCF LOB Adapter SDK framework. However these are not the first adapters to be released by Microsoft for integration. The BizTalk Adapters for Enterprise Applications is a suite of adapters based on the older BizTalk Adapter Framework and was released with BizTalk 2006 and BizTalk 2009. Among others, this suite has adapters for SAP, Siebel, and Oracle DB systems. BizTalk Server has a native SQL adapter. With the release of BizTalk 2009, all these adapters are deprecated in favour of the WCF-based adapters in the Adapter Pack as the latter set has more features and support more LOB versions. The Adapter Pack is based on a different technology and is not compatible out-of-the-box with the older adapters. For example, an application which used the older SAP adapter will not work directly if you installed the SAP adapter from the Adapter Pack. The BizTalk Adapter Pack Migration tool aims to help developers get started with the process of migrating projects using older adapters to use WCF-based projects. This tool currently supports migrating SAP, Oracle DB, and SQL adapters. After running the tool you should be able to deploy and run the new project as-is in most simple projects or fix some aspects as per the limitations outlined in the documentation. The package above has a detailed tutorial on how to use the tool.

The Consumer Solution Accelerator for Windows Mobile is designed to help developers see how they can harness the power of Windows Mobile to craft compelling consumer solutions. The Consumer Solution Accelerator consists of a documented sample Visual Studio project as well as documents which detail the creation of the project and how it functions.
The Consumer Solution Accelerator (“Meeting Assistant”) showcases a mobile consumer application written in Microsoft® Visual C#® and Microsoft Visual C++® using Microsoft Visual Studio® 2008. This .NET Compact Framework 3.5 application assists a user who is travelling to a meeting. The application can:
Display maps and other location data relevant to the user.
Estimate how long it will take to get to the meeting.
Notify other meeting attendees if you are going to be late. The application will interact with the mobile device’s built-in Calendar and Contacts applications, use the device’s GPS receiver (if available), use the device’s SMS capability, and use Microsoft Virtual Earth™ Web services. Application Features and Functionality Starting the Meeting Assistant Application The user launches the application from an appointment’s context menu in the Calendar application, and the application tries to use the location data from the appointment to retrieve location data for the meeting. This location data includes:
Map images
Car parking details If necessary, it is possible to fix or override the meeting location from within the Meeting Assistant application. The application caches the location data to avoid having to re-download it every time the user runs the application. Tracking Progress After the user has launched the application, it will periodically use GPS positional data and Virtual Earth to calculate an estimated time of arrival (ETA) at the meeting location. The application assumes that the user is travelling by car. If the application determines that the user will be late for the meeting, it will offer the user the option to send SMS or e-mail messages to other attendees to inform them of the new ETA. These messages will include the new ETA and, optionally, the user’s current location. The user will also be able to override the ETA calculated by the application. Removing Cached Location Data The application automatically removes cached location data from old meetings. Display Meeting Updates The application can receive specially formatted SMS messages from other meeting attendees, sent by the application running on another device if another attendee is running late.

This white paper describes how the Microsoft concern for security, as defined in the Trustworthy Computing initiative, has driven key features in the design, deployment, and operation of the Microsoft Online Services environment. The Business Productivity Online Suite is a set of subscription-based enterprise software services hosted by Microsoft and sold with partners. The services operate within a complete ecosystem of features and capabilities designed to meet and in many cases to exceed the security and availability goals that you have for your business applications.
Service security must be proactively designed in to all aspects of the online experience, from the software itself to the supporting infrastructure, from the day-to-day best practices for your own information workers to the buildings housing the data centers. The security architecture for the Business Productivity Online Suite embodies the key principles of the company’s Trustworthy Computing Initiative: security created by design, by default, and by deployment. Developed for global enterprises, Microsoft’s multi-faceted security program applies a common set of security policies to manage risk and mitigate threats to customer data. Microsoft seeks to improve security by working to standardize the way it tests, implements, and monitor policies for all of its customers. In turn, each Business Productivity Online Suite customer benefits from Microsoft’s experience with the security concerns of customers all over the world — and from the practices Microsoft applies to address them.

One of the most highly anticipated new features in Windows Server® 2008 R2 Hyper-V™ is live migration. This document describes the live migration feature of Windows Server® 2008 R2 Hyper-V™ in detail, including how live migration moves running VMs and requirements for implementing live migration
With Hyper-V™ live migration, you can move running VMs from one Hyper-V™ physical host to another without any disruption of service or perceived downtime. Live migration is integrated with Windows Server 2008® R2 Hyper-V™ and Microsoft® Hyper-V™ Server 2008 R2. Since Hyper-V™ live migration can move running virtual machines without downtime, it will facilitate greater flexibility and value: • Provides better agility: Datacenters with multiple Hyper-V™ physical hosts will be able to move running VMs to the best physical computer for performance, scaling, or optimal consolidation without impacting users. • Reduces costs and increase productivity: Datacenters with multiple Hyper-V™ physical hosts will be able to service those systems in a more controlled fashion, scheduling maintenance during regular business hours. Live migration makes it possible to keep VMs online, even during maintenance, increasing productivity for both users and server administrators. Datacenters will be also able to reduce power consumption by dynamically increasing consolidation ratios and powering off un-used physical hosts during times of lower demand.

The HealthVault Service Specification published under the Microsoft Community Promise.
HealthVault Service Specification is a specification for the development of an open, online environment based on protocols that enables consumers to control the collection, storage, access, use, and disclosure of information about their health and well-being. The HealthVault Platform is a web-based API layer that provides data and infrastructure services upon which all HealthVault applications are built. It includes a web application that provides an explorer type UI for the HealthVault Platform as well as being the key middleman web based authentication. This specification is bounded to the system description level and makes no claims related to the user interface or APIs that a system might implement. The environment enables loosely-coupled partners to create a comprehensive suite of functionality that leverage these core capabilities. The resulting ecosystem of healthcare service generates economies of scale and value for consumers that exceed those of a standalone consumer healthcare application. Microsoft Sync Framework is a comprehensive synchronization platform that enables collaboration and offline scenarios for applications, services, and devices. Using Microsoft Sync Framework, developers can build applications that synchronize data from any source using any protocol over any network.
Sync Framework Overview Microsoft Sync Framework provides a synchronization platform that caters to the following scenarios, in which data needs to be synchronized between multiple data sources:
Microsoft Sync Framework makes no assumptions about how data is stored or transmitted. Sync Framework places no restrictions on the type of data sources that can be synchronized, the protocol and network that are used to communicate with each data source , or the type of synchronization topology that is used. A data source can be synchronized with any other data source in any order; full peer-to-peer synchronization topologies are supported. In order to cater to any data source, Sync Framework uses a provider model, with each sync provider being responsible for synchronizing a particular type of data source (or replica). Sync Framework is used to author providers and is used to perform the actual synchronization between the providers. As well as enabling providers to be authored, Sync Framework includes several built-in providers:

This download consists of a list of sites that are most likely to be displayed better in Compatibility View in Windows Internet Explorer 8.
Windows Internet Explorer 8 is Microsoft’s latest web browser. Unlike previous versions, Internet Explorer 8 renders content in the most standards-compliant way possible. This means that web pages will be displayed in Internet Explorer 8’s standards mode by default. Through product feedback channels, our users have indicated that, during the beta period, some websites may not have been compatible with Internet Explorer 8 in its default, standards-based mode. As a result, these domains have been added to a list of sites that, for the short-term, are most likely to be displayed better in Compatibility View. All Internet Explorer 8 users are given the choice to use this list, and the subset that chooses to do so will see each listed domain automatically displayed in Compatibility View, without additional user interaction or notice. The sites on this list have high traffic volume (in their regions), and having a compatible website ensures a significant number of Internet Explorer 8 users will have a great experience. This list will be periodically updated and automatically downloaded to Internet Explorer 8 users who have opted-in to use Compatibility View updates from Microsoft. For more information on Compatibility View list updates, please see - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960321.

These documents help .NET developers better understand and evaluate Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) in the Microsoft .NET Framework 4, and the impact of WF 4 on existing WF workflows and code.
This collection of documents by the WF product team should help .NET developers currently using WF in the .NET Framework 3.0 and 3.5 to evaluate .NET Framework 4. The documents map concepts between the existing WF model (defined as the types in the System.Workflow.* namespaces, or WF3) and the new WF model (defined as the types in the System.Activities.* namespaces, or WF4). The documents and code samples are expected to be updated semi-regularly as additional content is created, and based on the feedback we receive, starting with the release of .NET Framework 4 Beta 1, and continuing through RTM of .NET 4. Feedback and questions around the documents should be directed to the WF 4 Forums.

Following up on yesterday’s post about the Windows 7 release date. We finally have something on the official press release site.
Cheers!
According to a posting by Sarah Perez, we (Microsoft) announced the general availability of Windows 7 at a conference in Asia today. I could not find anything at our Official Press Release Site not is there anything on the Windows 7 landing page. However, I did find a Wall Street Journal Europe posting announcing the same thing.
Oh….the date?
October 22nd.
You do the math to figure out an RTM date. I will let you craft your own conclusions on that. Regardless, it is going to be a LOT sooner than most have expected!

Tomorrow the Seattle Windows Networking User Group is meeting in Bellevue at the Microsoft Lincoln Square office. We will have pizza and soft drinks for everyone that attends.
For this month’s presentation, I was called upon to fill in and have chosen to deliver my Windows 7 – Coolness session. I delivered this a month ago at another User Group and received very good feedback on it. Here is the abstract I provided for the session -
Windows 7 – Coolness Coolness says it all. Windows 7 has some great new features that will change how you do your everyday tasks. At this week’s meeting, come see real demos – not PowerPoint slides – of Windows 7 in action. I will demo some of the new features in the GUI to organize your desktop and help find things you need. We will look at new power saving features and personalization enhancement. We will also look at some of the features in Internet Explorer v8 that you may not be aware of. We will look at some changes in security features that reduce the prompts users see for every days tasks and features designed to protect our increasingly mobile data. Finally we will demonstrate a mobile connectivity feature called Direct Access that enables end users to seamlessly connect to corporate networks and access resources as if they were in the office – all without a VPN. This guide contains best-practice recommendations for recovering an Active Directory forest, if forest-wide failure has rendered all domain controllers in the forest incapable of functioning normally. The procedure steps in this guide, which you must customize for your particular environment, describe how to recover the entire Active Directory forest to a point in time before the critical malfunction. They also ensure that none of the restored domain controllers replicates from a domain controller with potentially dangerous data. The procedures apply to Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) in Windows Server 2008 and the Active Directory® directory service in Windows Server 2003.

Compares DirectAccess with VPNs and describes the scenarios that are most appropriate for each.
The Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems include DirectAccess, a remote-access technology that automatically connects computers to their internal network anytime they have an Internet connection. This gives remote users all of the benefits of being in the office; they have constant access to internal resources and their computers can be updated and managed. While DirectAccess provides many advantages over virtual private networks (VPNs), most organizations will use the two remote access technologies side-by-side. This document compares DirectAccess with VPNs and describes the scenarios that are most appropriate for each.

Internet Explorer 8 offers users more protection than previous versions of the browser through a combination of new security and privacy features, and changes for more secure default settings. In keeping with the need to balance security and usability, the default values for these new features and settings have been configured to offer the best choice for a broad range of users. This white paper examines some of these new features and settings that you can modify to provide a more "locked down" security configuration. This paper does not provide a complete review of all settings, nor is the guidance in it specifically equivalent to the Enhanced Server Configuration for Windows Server® 2003 or Windows Server® 2008. The settings and features this paper discusses offer additional security guidance for the broadest impact on most users and administrators. This paper discusses both the Windows Vista® and Windows® XP versions of Internet Explorer. Administrators and system owners can use the guidance in this paper to tighten security settings in the browser to meet their specific needs. The document is structured to provide a description and review of the settings and features the paper discusses. Microsoft recommendations for enhancing the default security settings in some common deployment scenarios are also provided.
