Handy summaries of the most common procedures and commands used to administer Server Core installations
Server Core installations of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 do not provide a graphical user interface. Instead, all configuration and management operations take place in the command prompt. The numerous and varied commands and procedures for common activites such as installing server roles, configuring the firewall, and assorted Active Directory domain actions can be difficult to remember. Although all of this and more is documented extensively in the Server Core Installation Option Getting Started Guide (available both at this Download Center and at the Windows Server Technical Library), administrators may not have Internet access to look up the commands. The full Getting Started Guide is quite large, and could be inconvenient to reference in printed form for just a few key commands. These Job Aids present the most common procedures and commands necessary to configure and manage Server Core installations in a one-page format that you can download, print, and fold to pocket size. The back has been left blank so you can add your own notes, procedures, or commands specific to your own deployments or operations. Currently there are two Job Aids, one for Windows Server 2008 and one for Windows Server 2008 R2. Both are continuously updated based on feedback from users.

Visio 2007 Pro WBS Modeler Visio 2007 WBS Modeler improves the project planning process by generating Project Plans from a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) using a graphical representation of elements.
The Visio WBS Modeler (WBS Modeler in the following) is intended to improve the project planning process by giving the opportunity to generate Project Plans from a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) using a graphical representation of elements. A WBS structure is a hierarchical representation of the elements and sub-elements in a project (Step by step instructions and screen shot images available in WBS Modeler User Guide.pdf). The WBS Modeler can either be used to visualize and edit an existing project plan or to create a new project plan in Microsoft Office Visio 2007 Professional and then export it to Microsoft Office Project (2003+) to carry out the next planning steps. The Application enables effective integration of Visio with Microsoft Office Project. It provides an approach to visually and graphically create, edit and modify project plans using Visio. The WBS Modeler offers the ability to manage project elements in a graphical view, as well as offering functionality to layout a WBS in Visio. The WBS can be exported back to Microsoft Office Project into a new project plan. It is also possible to update an existing plan. However this update process is limited to deleting, renaming or adding elements. Moving elements is not supported at the current stage. To organize the structure within a WBS Modeler the outline code from Microsoft Office Project is utilized.

Geneva Interop Information
Available Here for Download "Geneva" and Sun OpenSSO Interoperability between applications in heterogeneous technology environments is essential to successful collaboration between organizations today. Sun and Microsoft are taking interoperability to a new level by utilizing the SAML federation standard in both the Sun OpenSSO Enterprise federation solution and the forthcoming Microsoft “Geneva” Server federation solution. By standardizing on SAML for federation, Sun and Microsoft enable organizations to deliver collaborative services with ease. "Geneva" and Novell Access Manager Despite remarkable gains in IT capabilities and collaboration, organizations continue to struggle with administrative complexity, workforce productivity, and data security. Many organizations support a large number of users—including employees, customers, partners, and suppliers—who seek access to a wide variety of applications and services. This can be particularly challenging in mixed-technology and multiple-domain environments where users are spread across technical and business boundaries. Microsoft and Novell have come together to solve these challenges and boost cross-organizational collaboration. The two companies are building the interoperability bridges that enable customers to reduce complexity, enhance security, and decrease costs. This paper explains the need for standards-based identity federation, and the current and forthcoming solutions that improve the interoperability of mixed-technology directory environments.

This update helps make websites designed for older browsers look better in Internet Explorer 8. To take advantage of this update, you must have “Include updated website lists from Microsoft” selected in Internet Explorer’s Compatibility View Settings.
Windows Internet Explorer 8 improves browser interoperability and advances the Web by delivering a better implementation of Web standards. While this is a move in the right direction, users might encounter compatibility issues with some sites that still rely on the behavior of previous versions of Internet Explorer. Microsoft understands the shift towards standards compatibility with Internet Explorer 8 may take some time to complete for each organization or webmaster. To bridge this transition, we offer the Compatibility View list. The list helps make websites designed for older browsers look better in Internet Explorer 8.

GDC 2009: Networking Traffic Jams and Schrodingers Cat This talk explains how to overcome the challenges posed by limited bandwidth and delivery latency.
The XNA Framework networking API makes it easy to join a session and exchange data packets. But what exactly should you put in those packets? This talk explains how to overcome the challenges posed by limited bandwidth (if you send too much data, or fail to properly compress it, your game could end up even slower than my morning commute) and delivery latency (when packets arrive late, you must use prediction algorithms to smooth things out, creating a strange quantum world where each object has more than one state being simulated in parallel).

The ISA Server Best Practices Analyzer Tool is designed for administrators who want to determine the overall health of their ISA Server computers and to diagnose current problems. The tool scans the configuration settings of the local ISA Server computer and reports issues that do not conform to the recommended best practices.
The ISA Server Best Practices Analyzer (BPA) is a diagnostic tool that automatically performs specific tests on configuration data collected on the local ISA Server computer from the ISA Server hierarchy of administration COM objects, Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) classes, the system registry, files on disk, and the Domain Name System (DNS) settings. The resulting report details critical configuration issues, potential problems, and information about the local computer. By following the recommendations of the tool, administrators can achieve greater performance, scalability, reliability, and uptime. The ISA Server Best Practices Analyzer is supplied with two supplemental tools. • The ISA Data Packager enables you to create a single .cab file containing ISA Server diagnostic information that can be easily sent to Microsoft Product Support Services for analysis. • BPA2Visio generates a Microsoft Office Visio® 2003 or Visio 2007 diagram of your network topology as seen from an ISA Server computer or any Windows computer based on output from the ISA Server Best Practices Analyzer Tool.

Woo HoO! I am at TechEd in Los Angeles talking face-to-face with IT Pros this week. I am working a couple of areas this week – the Thrive booth where we are talking about resources to help IT Pros with Virtualization, Cost Savings, Certification and lot more – and, the Server Quest II booth which is the second version of a Silverlight based game that has a nice 80’s retro game feel to it. It also features a lot of useful information for IT Pr’s and Developers on our products and tools.
There….now that I have tied this post to gaming…..
Me with Annie Leung at TechEd 2009
I will be here for 3 more days but the highlight to beat is getting to play Guitar Hero head-to-head with Annie “Ecstacy” Leung. Annie is one of the top ranked professional game players in the world! I had heard the name Ecstacy and Guitar Hero before but it wasn’t until I saw her at the Kingston booth that it clicked who she really was. I played a 1/2 dozen songs against her and she crushed me on all but one. The last song we played was Barracuda by Heart. She missed a note early on and I managed to get ahead of her in points till about the half way point in the song when I got very nervous about the possibility of beating her and I fell apart. I imagine I would have fallen apart anyway so I can say with all honesty that her crown was never seriously challenged by me :) You can read more about Annie at her MySpace page too.
Thank you Annie!

This document provides an overview of BranchCache, explains the different modes in which BranchCache operates, and describes how BranchCache is configured. The paper also explains how BranchCache works with Web servers and file servers and the steps BranchCache takes to determine that the content is up-to-date.
BranchCache™ is a feature in Windows® 7 and Windows Server® 2008 R2 that can reduce wide area network (WAN) utilization and enhance network application responsiveness when users access content in a central office from branch office locations. When you enable BranchCache, a copy of the content that is retrieved from the Web server or file server is cached within the branch office. If another client in the branch requests the same content, the client can download it directly from the local branch network without needing to retrieve the content by using the Wide Area Network (WAN). This document provides an overview of BranchCache, explains the different modes in which BranchCache operates, and describes how BranchCache is configured. The paper also explains how BranchCache works with Web servers and file servers and the steps BranchCache takes to determine that the content is up-to-date.

The BizTalk RFID tutorials contain detailed steps for implementing simple scenarios to give new users an experience of using a variety of BizTalk RFID tools and APIs while creating compiled, testable solutions. You can also find the BizTalk RFID tutorials in the "Getting Started" section of BizTalk RFID help. • Tutorial: Order Fulfillment - This tutorial shows you how to implement a BizTalk RFID solution for the Order Fulfillment Scenario in an incremental fashion (lesson-by-lesson). At the end of each lesson, you can test the solution to verify that it works correctly. You will develop a solution for the shipping station and then develop a solution for the commissioning station. • Tutorial: Creating an RFID Device Provider - This tutorial shows how to create a provider by using the Provider Template sample that you can download from the BizTalk Server R2 Code Samples Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=83460). The tutorial also shows how to use RFID Manager to test a provider at each step of development instead of implementing the entire provider before starting to test it. • Tutorial: Supply Chain - The supply chain tutorial walks you through a supply chain scenario that is likely to be used in a manufacturing organization. The supply chain scenario in this tutorial is not intended to be a complete end-to-end scenario, but rather one that illustrates the concepts of how BizTalk RFID can be used. Many of the concepts that you will learn in this tutorial will be repeated in other areas of a real-world supply chain scenario. • Tutorial: Creating a Device Simulator and Testing a Device Provider - This tutorial walks you through the steps needed to develop a device simulator. The device simulator framework is used to create a device, and the device uses the simulator to send messages in XML format to the provider.

ADMX Migrator is a snap-in for the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) that simplifies the process of converting your existing Group Policy ADM Templates to the new ADMX format and provides a graphical user interface for creating and editing Administrative templates.
ADMX Migrator, which is created and supported by FullArmor, enables you to convert ADM files to the ADMX format and take advantage of the additional capabilities that it provides. The new XML-based format includes multilanguage support, an optional centralized datastore, and version control capabilities. You can select multiple ADM files for conversion. The ADMX Migrator creates a unique namespace which you can rename and will display a warning if a collision is detected due to duplicate names. Also, any items that cannot be validated against the ADMX schema are preserved in an Unsupported section. Please note that any annotations in ADM files are removed during the conversion process. Additionally, the ADMX Migrator provides an ADMX editor with a graphical user interface for creating and editing Administrative Templates. You can select settings from menus rather than entering them manually in a text file, speeding template creation and reducing the chance for error. Version 1.3 includes: (1) Enhancements and bug fixes to support a wider range of ADM templates for conversion to ADMX. (2) Enhancements to code and documentation for conversion error reporting and warnings. (3) Improved stability when editing policy setting registry values on the Values tab. For support with ADMX Migrator, see http://www.fullarmor.com/admx-migrator-issue-report.htm.
