I have become a big fan of the Technet Flash newsletter. Many times I have been reading it and run across a link to another site that was chock full of information. Or, I may stumble on a link to a beta app or other application that slipped under my radar. The Technet Flash is a monthly newsletter for IT Professionals that helps keep you informed on what Microsoft (and other companies!) are doing in the IT Pro community.
This month, The Scripting Guys, have a section dedicated to AD Scripting. This caught my eye because of my growing interesting in PowerShell. I have placed an excerpt from the flash below.
Check out the current Technet Flash and if you like, subscribe to the flash.
Hey Scripting Guy...

This CTP is an early preview of the v1.5 features for ADO.NET Data Services. This CTP targets the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and extends the functionality we provided in v1.0 of ADO.NET Data Services by providing additional features.
This CTP is a preview of the set of features we are considering shipping with the next version of ADO.NET Data Services. This CTP targets the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and extends the functionality we provided in v1.0 of ADO.NET Data Services by providing additional features. The features in this CTP may not be included in the .NET Framework 4 or Silverlight 3 when they ship. As this is a CTP release, we recommend that you do not install this release on your primary development computer. Also, be aware that the features that ultimately ship with the final release of v1.5 may be different than the features included in this CTP. The features included in this CTP are: - Row count - Feed customization (aka "web-friendly feeds") - Data binding for WPF and Silverlight 2 - Enhanced blob support - Server-driven paging - A new "Data Service Provider" interface for custom providers - Various bug fixes to V1.0 features Install Notes: This release is separate from the Project Codename "Astoria Offline", Alpha Preview released on March 5, 2009. Installing this CTP on the same system as the Offline release will cause a conflict and is not supported. We strongly recommend that you do not install them together. It is possible to use this CTP with the Windows 7 Beta; however, design time support integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 SP1 or Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition will not be available on Windows 7 Beta. Using DataSvcUtil.exe for client-side code generation will also not be available on Windows 7 Beta. You will receive a warning if you use the setup on a system with Windows 7 Beta installed indicating a file is locked but the setup will not fail.

ASP.NET MVC 1.0 provides a new Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework on top of the existing ASP.NET 3.5 runtime.
ASP.NET MVC 1.0 provides a new Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework on top of the existing ASP.NET 3.5 runtime. This means that developers can take advantage of the MVC design patterns to create their Web Applications which includes the ability to achieve and maintain a clear separation of concerns (the UI or view from the business and application logic and backend data), as well as facilitate test driven development (TDD). The ASP.NET MVC framework defines a specific pattern to the Web Application folder structure and provides a controller base-class to handle and process requests for “actions”. Developers can take advantage of the specific Visual Studio 2008 MVC templates within this release to create their Web applications, which includes the ability to select a specific Unit Test structure to accompany their Web Application development. The MVC framework is fully extensible at all points, allowing developers to create sophisticated structures that meet their needs, including for example Dependency Injection (DI) techniques, new view rendering engines or specialized controllers. As the ASP.NET MVC framework is built on ASP.NET 3.5, developers can take advantage of many existing ASP.NET 3.5 features, such as localization, authorization, Profile etc.n

CAT.NET is a binary code analysis tool that helps identify common variants of certain prevailing vulnerabilities that can give rise to common attack vectors such as Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), SQL Injection and XPath Injection.
CAT.NET is a snap-in to the Visual Studio IDE that helps you identify security flaws within a managed code (C#, Visual Basic .NET, J#) application you are developing. It does so by scanning the binary and/or assembly of the application, and tracing the data flow among its statements, methods, and assemblies. This includes indirect data types such as property assignments and instance tainting operations. The engine works by reading the target assembly and all reference assemblies used in the application -- module-by-module -- and then analyzing all of the methods contained within each. It finally displays the issues its finds in a list that you can use to jump directly to the places in your application's source code where those issues were found. The following rules are currently support by this version of the tool. - Cross Site Scripting - SQL Injection - Process Command Injection - File Canonicalization - Exception Information - LDAP Injection - XPATH Injection - Redirection to User Controlled Site

This download consists of a list of sites that are most likely to be displayed better in Compatibility View in Windows Internet Explorer 8.
Windows Internet Explorer 8 is Microsoft’s latest web browser. Unlike previous versions, Internet Explorer 8 renders content in the most standards-compliant way possible. This means that web pages will be displayed in Internet Explorer 8’s standards mode by default. Through product feedback channels, our users have indicated that, during the beta period, some websites may not have been compatible with Internet Explorer 8 in its default, standards-based mode. As a result, these domains have been added to a list of sites that, for the short-term, are most likely to be displayed better in Compatibility View. All Internet Explorer 8 users are given the choice to use this list, and the subset that chooses to do so will see each listed domain automatically displayed in Compatibility View, without additional user interaction or notice. The sites on this list have high traffic volume (in their regions), and having a compatible website ensures a significant number of Internet Explorer 8 users will have a great experience. This list will be periodically updated and automatically downloaded to Internet Explorer 8 users who have opted-in to use Compatibility View updates from Microsoft. For more information on Compatibility View list updates, please see - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960321.

Microsoft MultiPoint Software Development Kit (SDK) is a development framework that allows developers to build applications that enable up to 250 individual mouse devices to work simultaneously on one computer.
The Microsoft® MultiPoint™ SDK version 1.1 is a development framework that allows developers to build applications that enable up to 250 individual mouse devices to work simultaneously on one computer. As a developer, you can use the MultiPoint SDK to create educational applications that take advantage of collaborative learning methodologies. In schools with minimum infrastructure, MultiPoint greatly enhances the shared computing experience. Initial pilot programs conducted in India by Microsoft Research show that for certain subjects, MultiPoint can enhance learning when compared to a 1:1 computing scenario. MultiPoint should not be confused with applications that allow multiple people to control multiple mouse devices to perform standard operations. In those cases, the system traditionally cannot identify which mouse has made which changes, and there is normally no option for controlling the permissions of the various devices. MultiPoint is a development framework that enables developers to build applications to take advantage of multiple mouse devices, including the ability to handle mouse clicks from different users independently and to assign different permissions to each mouse. For example, the mouse belonging to a teacher in a learning application might need additional permissions to control the activity).

A scaled down version of the screenshot will be visible at the bottom, and the user has a choice of whether or not to include the full-sized screenshot (choosing No to the “Include Screenshot?” question means no screenshot will be sent). On the report submission page, the user also has the option to select a category best representing their observed problem. This category selection will be part of the report information returned to Microsoft. A 1000 character limit comment field is provided, if the user chooses to include some description of the problem. Additional data included in the report:

TheEnterpriseSpreadsheetPushingTowardTransparency
The over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives market is a microcosm of what is and will be happening in financial services. It is a market that uniquely reflects the needs of clients, the concerns of regulators, the opportunity among banks, and the role of technology. The problems and solutions for OTC derivatives have broad applications to other parts of the financial services industry. One of the services with which a derivatives, or structured product, desk provides clients is the ability to quickly structure, price and execute an agreement that replicates the returns of an underlying index or basket of securities with customized terms and conditions. Besides highly standardized products like total-return swaps and barrier options, the spreadsheet is a key tool in creating, pricing and analyzing these products. In today’s risk-averse environment, however, the derivatives desk must balance the creativity and speed that clients demand with the pressure that banks are under to better manage their exposure to various forms of risk. These trends are driving a redesign of the way spreadsheets are deployed, run and managed across the financial-services industry, from global commercial banks to Greenwich-based hedge funds.

Follow all updates on my blog – http://blogs.msdn.com/mithund; Questions – Contact Mithun Dhar
Whew! What a week it has been! Spent time at the Windows/Exchange conferences last week and then another 4 days on vacation with my kids. Had a blast doing both and have a few stories to share once I get caught up with all of my admin work I am behind on from the last week.
Things I need to do....
Do my expenses (I am late!)
Replace my iPhone (it took a swim in a hot tub)
Do some Q4 planning
Catch up on email (lots and lots of email, please be patient...)
Get slides and supporting information posted for the sessions I delivered at the conference (this will be one of the last things completed today)
If you need anything from me, the best place to reach me today will be email as I will be be shutting down all of my social apps today to eliminate distractions and get caught up. I will have a phone back in action around 12noon pacific time today if you need to call.
As promised, here are some resources for the webcast I delivered this morning. Two of the questions I deferred to the blog are -
What software packages need to be ordered/in-place to run Microsoft Application Virtualization?
This is the SoftGrid Application Virtualization product. This is available in the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack which is a suite of products designed to help you manage, maintain and optimize you desktop and application deployments for both physical and virtualized instances.
Some addition interesting downloads/information pages

The other question -
Are there and UPS Solutions for Windows Server Core?
I made some queries and I came up empty on this. I figured APC would have a solution by now since they are one of the major players in the UPS market but I don't see anything listed on there site either. This is not to say that there is no solution but I did not find one listed on the first two pages of a Live or Google Search which leads me to believe they aren't readily available.

ASP.NET MVC RC2 release provides a new Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework on top of the existing ASP.NET 3.5 runtime.
The ASP.NET MVC RC2 release provides a new Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework on top of the existing ASP.NET 3.5 runtime. As the ASP.NET MVC framework is built on ASP.NET 3.5, developers can take advantage of many existing ASP.NET 3.5 features, such as localization, authorization, Profile etc.

These guides and tool provide additional information for Service Providers to plan and deploy Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0.
Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0: Planning and Deployment Guidance for Service Providers contains the following documentations and tool: 1. Deployment Walkthrough Guide for Service Providers 2. Planning Guide for Service Providers 3. Development Guide for Service Providers 4. Microsoft Software License Terms 5. Deployment Configuration Tool This guidance provides additional information for Service Providers who are interested in hosting Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 in their data center, or for enterprise customers who are interested in leveraging Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 multi-tenant architecture in their IT infrastructure. The documentation walks you through the planning process, provides sizing and architectural guidance, and shows you how to deploy Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 in a data center that can be accessed over the Internet by any CRM clients. It covers the topics about how to leverage the Deployment SDK to automate the creation and provisioning of organizations and users within the multi-tenant Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 deployment. For general planning and deployment guidance, see the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Implementation Guide (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=104413). Important Supplemental Information The following sections provide additional information that you must consider when you install and configure Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0. Dynamics CRM Email Router in a lab or test environment In a lab or test environment, it is common practice to consolidate server roles. The Microsoft Dynamics CRM E-mail Router inbound mail processing will not function if installed on a Microsoft Exchange 2007 Server with combined Client Access Server (CAS) and Mailbox server roles on the same machine. It is recommended that you install Microsoft Exchange 2007 CAS Server on a dedicated server. Microsoft Dynamics CRM sign-in form In a lab or test environment, it is common practice to place servers in a flat network topology. If Internet Explorer is run on a machine in the same network as the Microsoft Dynamics CRM environment, the user will be presented with a Windows authentication dialog box instead of being directed to the sign-in form. To work around this, the subnet mask value of the ifdInternalNetworkAddress registry key will need to be updated to the value 255.255.255.255. Secure Sockets Layer configuration The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate must be installed and configured before you access the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Web site. To display the Microsoft Dynamics CRM sign-in form, the organization name is read from the SSL certificate name. Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server Configuration setup file The deployment process described in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Deployment Guide for Service Providers makes use of an XML configuration file to provide Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server setup with additional information that is required to complete the installation successfully. The <sdkrootdomain> and <webapplicationrootdomain> elements in the XML configuration file should be provided with values of the fully qualified domain name of the Service Provider. Example values for a service provider named Consolidatedmessenger.com may look like the following:
<sdkrootdomain>service.consolidatedmessenger.com<sdkrootdomain>
<webapplicationrootdomain>service.consolidatedmessenger.com<webapplicationrootdomain>

A preview of a sync-enabled version of the Astoria framework that can be used to create offline applications.
"Astoria Offline" is designed to provide an end-to-end solution for authoring of offline applications that use data from data services, either within a corporate network or across the Internet. This download provides the tools and runtime components necessary to create the client and server components of the system and create sync-capable databases (or adjust existing database schemas with sync capabilities). The goal of this initial release is to explore the requirements in this space and share our current thoughts on our approach. The download contains a "Using Astoria Offline" document that gives a step-by-step walkthrough to create an offline-enabled application. The walkthrough provides an exploration of the infrastructure and how it can be used to build applications. Additionally, a complete example of an offline-enabled application is included in the download. This release is built on top of the ADO.NET Data Services v1.0 release and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. This is an early “preview” release, as such, it is not supported and should only be used for prototyping and investigating. As this is a preview release, it is strongly recommended that this release be installed in a test-only environment; a virtual machine is recommended. Please read the included README for more information on support and limitations of this download. Note: This release is separate from the ADO.NET Data Services v1.5 CTP1 release that will be available soon. Installing this offline preview release on the same system as the v1.5 CTP1 is not supported and it is strongly recommended that you do not install the two releases on the same system.

The Microsoft Security Assessment Tool (MSAT) is a risk-assessment application designed to provide information and recommendations about best practices for security within an information technology (IT) infrastructure.
The Microsoft Security Assessment Tool 4.0 is the revised version of the original Microsoft Security Risk Self-Assessment Tool (MSRSAT), released in 2004 and the Microsoft Security Assessment Tool 2.0 released in 2006. Security issues have evolved since 2004 so additional questions and answers were needed to ensure you had a comprehensive toolset to become more aware of the evolving security threat landscape that could impact your organization. The tool employs a holistic approach to measuring your security posture by covering topics across people, process, and technology. Findings are coupled with prescriptive guidance and recommended mitigation efforts, including links to more information for additional industry guidance. These resources may assist you in keeping you aware of specific tools and methods that can help change the security posture of your IT environment. There are two assessments that define the Microsoft Security Assessment Tool:
The questions identified in the survey portion of the tool and the associated answers are derived from commonly accepted best practices around security, both general and specific. The questions and the recommendations that the tool offers are based on standards such as ISO 17799 and NIST-800.x, as well as recommendations and prescriptive guidance from Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing Group and additional security resources valued in the industry. After completing an Assessment, you will gain access to a detailed report of your results. You may also compare your results with those of your peers (by industry and company size), provided that you upload your results anonymously to the secure MSAT Web server. When you upload your data the application will simultaneously retrieve the most recent data available. To be able to provide this comparative data, we need customers such as you to upload their information. All information is kept strictly confidential and no personally identifiable information whatsoever will be sent. For more information on Microsoft's privacy policy, please visit: http://www.microsoft.com/info/privacy.mspx.

MicrosoftandCoreSystemVendorsPositionWindowsforLargeBanks
Microsoft Windows-based platforms have become ubiquitous at banks globally. Introduced in the 1980s for office processing functions, Windows is increasingly used by large banks to support critcal banking services including Internet banking, ATM, branch, and call center operations. Only a small number of mid-tier and larger banks, however, are processing their core banking systems on a Windows-based platform. This TowerGroup Research Note provides an overview of the penetration of Windows-based core systems at mid-tier and larger banks (those with more than $5 billion (USD) in assets) and provides examples of banks using Windows platforms for their core processing. The Note also discusses the issues and perceptions that inhibit banks' migration to Windows-based core systems.

The Infrastructure Planning and Design (IPD) guides are the next version of Windows Server System Reference Architecture. The guides in this series help clarify and streamline design processes for Microsoft infrastructure technologies, with each guide addressing a unique infrastructure technology or scenario.
Infrastructure Planning and Design guides share a common structure, including:
These guides complement product documentation by focusing on infrastructure design options. Each guide leads the reader through critical infrastructure design decisions, in the appropriate order, evaluating the available options for each decision against its impact on critical characteristics of the infrastructure. The IPD Series highlights when service and infrastructure goals should be validated with the organization and provides additional questions that should be asked of service stakeholders and decision makers. IPD consists of the following downloadable packages:
The guides are available as individual downloads or as a single all-in-one package. Note Windows Optimized Desktop Scenarios is available as an individual download only. Send questions or feedback to us directly at SATfdbk@microsoft.com

Microsoft® Response Point™ is phone system software designed for small businesses with 1 to 50 employees. The intuitive management programs, voice-activated user interface, and rich feature set make Response Point easy to configure, manage, and use. D-Link, Syspine, and Aastra offer complete systems that are bundled in affordable starter packages.
Microsoft® Response Point™ 1.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2) introduces new-and-improved features that expand your voice service choices, empower the administrator to better manage the system, and enhance the phone system experience for everyday users and callers. In Service Pack 2, Response Point adds "digital service" to the list of flexible voice service options to help balance the voice and data communication demands of your growing small business. Digital service is transmitted through an enterprise-grade hard-wire connection. "T1" (in the U.S.), "E1" (in Europe),"PRI," or "ISDN" service providers will run a special cable into your office building, similar to the cabling installed by a telco. Digital service lines normally have up to 24 rotating channels that can deliver voice and data packets to phone system components. Using Response Point Administrator, you can configure the digital gateway device required for this voice service. Some digital service providers may offer fractional digital service, which means you purchase only a portion of the circuit that may have only 8 available channels instead of 24. Response Point Administrator gives you more control over how you manage the system. In this service pack, you can schedule the Automated Receptionist to handle calls after-hours, on holidays, and during business closures; enable access to a virtual private network (VPN), giving employees in remote locations secured access to the resources on the local area network (LAN); configure hybrid gateway devices that have both FXO and FXS ports, or that can be used for either analog or digital service; reduce speech misrecognition, often caused by background noise and variable service requirements, when you change the channel that detects the DTMF touch tones on your phones. Response Point Assistant improves the overall experience for everyday users and callers. In this service pack, you can control how you receive 2-way intercom calls and 1-way pages, and play a call-forwarding announcement (or not) for people when they contact you. Additional SP2 features include automatic parked-call return, which ensures that no callers are left waiting in park longer than 3 minutes; support for VoIP gateway devices that can help improve service quality; and customizable URLs in call notification windows.

This update provides a way to recover nodes that seem to be stuck in the draining state
In some cases a compute node may appear to get 'stuck' in the Draining state. Applying this fix to the head node and any machines you run the HPC Pack Client Utilities on for administration will allow you to use the existing PowerShell node management commands on 'stuck' nodes. After applying the fix. the PowerShell commands that affect node state (e.g. Set-Hpcnodestate) will allow you to take nodes offline that are currently 'draining', take nodes online that are currently 'starting', or delete nodes in any state other than 'online'.

This document is a set of privacy guidelines for developing software products and services that are based on our internal guidelines and our experience incorporating privacy into the development process.
Failing to protect customer privacy can lead to an erosion of trust. Over the last several years, Microsoft has established extensive internal guidelines for developers that help them protect customer privacy, give them a view into customer expectations and global privacy laws, and document the hard lessons we’ve learned. These guidelines have been engrained in our development process and are now incorporated into the Security Development Lifecycle (SDL). The impact has been felt across Microsoft’s products and services. In response to requests from customers, partners, ISVs, educators, advocates, and regulators, we created a public set of privacy guidelines for developing software products and services. These guidelines are based on our internal guidelines and our experience incorporating privacy into the development process. By documenting our principles, we hope to help anyone building products and services to meet customer expectations and deliver a more trustworthy experience. As the threat landscape escalates, customers are feeling less able to control access to their personal information, so consumer trust is waning. As an industry, we need to set a high bar for respecting customer privacy, to help build greater trust in the Internet and e-commerce. We want to foster an open dialogue with others in the industry so we can build a common set of privacy best practices to help meet our privacy obligations and increase customer trust. We are pleased to offer our guidelines as a starting point to accelerate this effort. We invite you to download the document and send us your comments and feedback. Included in This Document:

A Microsoft perspective on the role of technology in protecting citizens’ privacy and personal information Public Sector privacy white paper, providing Microsoft's perspective on the role that technology plays in helping public organizations responsibly protect and manage personal information.
While the volume of personal information collected and used by business and government grows, widely publicized data breaches and concerns about privacy and identity theft threaten to erode public confidence in online commerce and e-government initiatives.
