Windows Server 2008 R2 & Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 - Hyper-V Live Migration Overview & Architecture

Brief Description

One of the most highly anticipated new features in Windows Server® 2008 R2 Hyper-V™ is live migration. This document describes the live migration feature of Windows Server® 2008 R2 Hyper-V™ in detail, including how live migration moves running VMs and requirements for implementing live migration

Overview

With Hyper-V™ live migration, you can move running VMs from one Hyper-V™ physical host to another without any disruption of service or perceived downtime. Live migration is integrated with Windows Server 2008® R2 Hyper-V™ and Microsoft® Hyper-V™ Server 2008 R2. Since Hyper-V™ live migration can move running virtual machines without downtime, it will facilitate greater flexibility and value: • Provides better agility: Datacenters with multiple Hyper-V™ physical hosts will be able to move running VMs to the best physical computer for performance, scaling, or optimal consolidation without impacting users. • Reduces costs and increase productivity: Datacenters with multiple Hyper-V™ physical hosts will be able to service those systems in a more controlled fashion, scheduling maintenance during regular business hours. Live migration makes it possible to keep VMs online, even during maintenance, increasing productivity for both users and server administrators. Datacenters will be also able to reduce power consumption by dynamically increasing consolidation ratios and powering off un-used physical hosts during times of lower demand.

Infrastructure Planning and Design

Brief Description

The Infrastructure Planning and Design (IPD) guides are the next version of Windows Server System Reference Architecture. The guides in this series help clarify and streamline design processes for Microsoft infrastructure technologies, with each guide addressing a unique infrastructure technology or scenario.

Overview

Infrastructure Planning and Design guides share a common structure, including:

  • Definition of the technical decision flow through the planning process.
  • Listing of decisions to be made and the commonly available options and considerations.
  • Relating the decisions and options to the business in terms of cost, complexity, and other characteristics.
  • Framing decisions in terms of additional questions to the business to ensure a comprehensive alignment with the appropriate business landscape.

These guides complement product documentation by focusing on infrastructure design options.
Each guide leads the reader through critical infrastructure design decisions, in the appropriate order, evaluating the available options for each decision against its impact on critical characteristics of the infrastructure. The IPD Series highlights when service and infrastructure goals should be validated with the organization and provides additional questions that should be asked of service stakeholders and decision makers.
IPD consists of the following downloadable packages:

  • New! Windows Optimized Desktop Scenarios

Microsoft Response Point 1.0 Service Pack 2

Brief Description

Microsoft® Response Point™ is phone system software designed for small businesses with 1 to 50 employees. The intuitive management programs, voice-activated user interface, and rich feature set make Response Point easy to configure, manage, and use. D-Link, Syspine, and Aastra offer complete systems that are bundled in affordable starter packages.

Overview

Microsoft® Response Point™ 1.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2) introduces new-and-improved features that expand your voice service choices, empower the administrator to better manage the system, and enhance the phone system experience for everyday users and callers.
In Service Pack 2, Response Point adds "digital service" to the list of flexible voice service options to help balance the voice and data communication demands of your growing small business. Digital service is transmitted through an enterprise-grade hard-wire connection. "T1" (in the U.S.), "E1" (in Europe),"PRI," or "ISDN" service providers will run a special cable into your office building, similar to the cabling installed by a telco. Digital service lines normally have up to 24 rotating channels that can deliver voice and data packets to phone system components. Using Response Point Administrator, you can configure the digital gateway device required for this voice service. Some digital service providers may offer fractional digital service, which means you purchase only a portion of the circuit that may have only 8 available channels instead of 24.
Response Point Administrator gives you more control over how you manage the system. In this service pack, you can schedule the Automated Receptionist to handle calls after-hours, on holidays, and during business closures; enable access to a virtual private network (VPN), giving employees in remote locations secured access to the resources on the local area network (LAN); configure hybrid gateway devices that have both FXO and FXS ports, or that can be used for either analog or digital service; reduce speech misrecognition, often caused by background noise and variable service requirements, when you change the channel that detects the DTMF touch tones on your phones.
Response Point Assistant improves the overall experience for everyday users and callers. In this service pack, you can control how you receive 2-way intercom calls and 1-way pages, and play a call-forwarding announcement (or not) for people when they contact you.
Additional SP2 features include automatic parked-call return, which ensures that no callers are left waiting in park longer than 3 minutes; support for VoIP gateway devices that can help improve service quality; and customizable URLs in call notification windows.

  • Data Engine.
  • Database client utilities, such as SQL Server Enterprise Manager and osql for SQL Server 7.0.
  • Database client connectivity components, such as the OLE DB Provider for SQL Server, the SQL Server Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) driver, and the client Net-Libraries.

Note: SQL Server 7.0 SP4 does not include any updates for the online analytical processing (OLAP) services components of SQL Server 7.0. For the latest updates of these components, download the OLAP portion of SQL Server 7.0 SP3.

Overview

Some XML applications don't require validation to function properly but others absolutely require it in one form or another to avoid disasters, whether it's through schema definitions or custom code. Aaron Skonnard discusses when validation is a MUST, then presents different implementation techniques for tackling the problem. He presents a declarative model for describing such rules through simple XPath assertions, which can be embedded in schema or WSDL definitions (a la Schematron). Throughout the session he walks you through a complete .NET sample that leverages the WebMethod framework to build a complete validation-oriented system.

SiteLock 1.15 Template for ActiveX Controls

Brief Description

Enables an ActiveX developer to restrict access to a control in a predetermined list of domains, or for a certain length of time. Includes a simple utility that displays the site list and expiration date of a site-locked control.

Overview

The default security model for Microsoft ActiveX controls is either "always safe" or "never safe" (for scripting or initialization). A control that is "always safe" can be used by any Web page author. The SiteLock ATL template enables an ActiveX developer to restrict access so that a control is only deemed safe when used in a predetermined list of domains. This limits the ability of Web page authors to reuse the control for malicious purposes.
Note: By default, the installer copies the ATL template, utilities, and documentation to the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\SiteLock 1.15" folder. Copy sitelock.h to your include directory or into your Visual C++/ATL project to use it.

ASP.NET MVC Release Candidate 1

Brief Description

ASP.NET MVC RC1 release provides a new Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework on top of the existing ASP.NET 3.5 runtime.

Overview

The ASP.NET MVC RC1 release provides a new Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework on top of the existing ASP.NET 3.5 runtime. This means that developers can take advantage of the MVC design patterns to create their Web Applications which includes the ability to achieve and maintain a clear separation of concerns (the UI or view from the business and application logic and backend data), as well as facilitate test driven development (TDD). The ASP.NET MVC framework defines a specific pattern to the Web Application folder structure and provides a controller base-class to handle and process requests for “actions”. Developers can take advantage of the specific Visual Studio 2008 MVC templates within this release to create their Web applications, which includes the ability to select a specific Unit Test structure to accompany their Web Application development.
The MVC framework is fully extensible at all points, allowing developers to create sophisticated structures that meet their needs, including for example Dependency Injection (DI) techniques, new view rendering engines or specialized controllers.
As the ASP.NET MVC framework is built on ASP.NET 3.5, developers can take advantage of many existing ASP.NET 3.5 features, such as localization, authorization, Profile etc.
Note: A couple of issues have been reported with the RC. We will post a refresh on Friday, January 30, 2009
