The Infrastructure Planning and Design (IPD) guides are the next version of Windows Server System Reference Architecture. The guides in this series help clarify and streamline design processes for Microsoft infrastructure technologies, with each guide addressing a unique infrastructure technology or scenario.
Infrastructure Planning and Design guides share a common structure, including:
These guides complement product documentation by focusing on infrastructure design options. Each guide leads the reader through critical infrastructure design decisions, in the appropriate order, evaluating the available options for each decision against its impact on critical characteristics of the infrastructure. The IPD Series highlights when service and infrastructure goals should be validated with the organization and provides additional questions that should be asked of service stakeholders and decision makers. IPD consists of the following downloadable packages:
The guides are available as individual downloads or as a single all-in-one package. Send questions or feedback to us directly at SATfdbk@microsoft.com

This step-by-step guide provides instructions for configuring Network Load Balancing (NLB) with Terminal Services. Using NLB with Terminal Services offers the benefits of increased availability, scalability, and load-balancing performance, as well as the ability to distribute a large number of Terminal Services clients over a group of terminal servers.
NLB distributes traffic across several servers by using the TCP/IP networking protocol. You can use NLB with a terminal server farm to scale the performance of a single terminal server by distributing sessions across multiple servers. Terminal Services Session Broker (TS Session Broker), included in Windows Server® 2008 Standard, Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, and Windows Server 2008 Datacenter, keeps track of disconnected sessions on the terminal server farm, and ensures that users are reconnected to those sessions. Additionally, TS Session Broker enables you to load balance sessions between terminal servers in a farm. This functionality is provided by the TS Session Broker Load Balancing feature. However, this session-based load balancing feature requires a front-end load balancing mechanism to distribute the initial connection requests to the terminal server farm. You can use a load balancing mechanism such as DNS round robin, NLB or a hardware load balancer to distribute the initial connection requests. By deploying NLB together with TS Session Broker Load Balancing, you can take advantage of both the network-based load balancing and failed server detection of NLB, and the session-based load balancing and per server limit on the number of pending logon requests that is available with TS Session Broker Load Balancing.

A set of hands on labs for Microsoft Enterprise Library Validation Application Block (4.1). Includes 13 labs in C#.
This set of hands on lab should act as your guide to learn about the Validation Application Block and practice how to leverage its capabilities in various application contexts. There are thirteen exercises (labs) in the package. Labs 1 through 11 deal with a WinForms data processing application which takes the information entered by the user to populate and process Customer and Address business objects. The Validation Application Block is used to validate the created business objects before processing them in gradually more sophisticated ways. Starting with Lab 7 the WinForms validation-integration feature is used to validate the input for the form's controls directly. Labs 8 through 11 deal with the extensibility of the block. Lab 12 shows how to use the ASP.NET validation-integration feature of the block to validate the ASP.NET control's values, using a web forms version of the simple data entry application from the previous labs. Finally, for Lab 13 the ASP.NET application works as a front end for a WCF service while the WCF validation-integration feature of the block is used to validate the service parameters declaratively on the server side.

This download contains the Community Promise Specification for UI Automation.
This download contains the Community Promise Specification for UI Automation. Microsoft UI Automation is the new accessibility framework for Microsoft Windows®, available on all operating systems that support Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). UI Automation provides programmatic access to most user interface (UI) elements on the desktop, enabling assistive technology products such as screen readers to provide information about the UI to end users and to manipulate the UI by means other than standard input. UI Automation also allows automated test scripts to interact with the UI. UI Automation client applications can be written with the assurance that they will work on multiple frameworks. The UI Automation core masks any differences in the frameworks that underlie various pieces of UI. For example, the Content property of a WPF button, the Caption property of a Win32 button, and the ALT property of an HTML image are all mapped to a single property, Name, in the UI Automation view. UI Automation provides full functionality in Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. UI Automation providers offer some support for Microsoft Active Accessibility client applications, through a built-in bridging service.

This is an Information Week report for business managers and IT managers aligning both business and technology objectives. Download the following document “Setting up Priorities for the Next-Generation Web Apps” for a closer look at the benefits and challenges involved in selecting the right rich Internet application (RIA) platform to fit your organization, from both perspectives.
Priorities for Next Generation Web Applications Through the use of new development environments, combined with web services and an emerging set of collaboration technologies, web applications are matching and threatening to exceed the capabilities of their shrink-wrapped forbearers. In this report, Information Analytics will assess both technical and business decision-makers interest in, and concerns about next generation web applications in three areas: advancements in user interface, integration of business intelligence and event processing with collaboration tools, and finally the interest in hosting some application functions in the cloud. We’ll most closely examine the ability for next generation web applications to kick off complex tasks such as bringing appropriate teams together to make critical decisions, and alerting stake holders of key developments. Are technology and business decision makers ready for these capabilities? We’ll find out. This is Information Week report for business managers and IT managers aligning business objectives with technology. Download the following document “Virtualization: Facing IT and Business Realities” for a closer look at the benefits and challenges involved in taking advantage of virtualization, from both perspectives.
Virtualization is the sort of game-changing technology that comes around once in decade, but so far its primary use has been to consolidate non-critical applications running on under-utilized servers. While technical decision makers manage the infrastructure on which applications run, it’s the line of business managers and corporate executives who must sign off on the bill. While IT executive may be excited about the prospects of running critical applications in a virtualized environment, business leaders may have a different percept on this new technology. In this report, we’ll compare and contrast the perception of business decision makers and technical decision makers on running production applications in a virtualized environment. While our poll will touch on such issues as security and privacy, we will emphasize both IT’s perceived and actual ability to assure performance, stability and availability and provide SLA metrics back to business technology partners.

Use the Download link on this page to download the installation package for the Windows PowerShell V2 CTP3. Windows PowerShell V2 CTP3 introduces several significant features to Windows PowerShell 1.0 and Windows PowerShell V2 CTPs that extends its use, improves its usability, and allows you to control and manage the Windows environment more easily and comprehensively.
This software is a pre-release version and should not be deployed in a production environment. It will not work the way a final version of the software does. Features will change before final release.
Many features introduced in previous CTPs were modified based upon customer feedback. If your scripts used those features, they may have to be modified to run properly. A list of the changes is provided in the Release Notes.
This CTP3 release is designed to provide a preview of key V2 features to the community and solicit feedback about them.
Windows PowerShell V2 CTP3 release is compatible with and replaces previous versions of Windows PowerShell. To install the Windows PowerShell V2 CTP3 release you must uninstall any previous version of Windows PowerShell.
Windows PowerShell V2 CTP3 uses the execution policy setting from the previous installation, if present. The Windows PowerShell installer does not remove or change the execution policy when you uninstall Windows PowerShell.

Windows PowerShell background jobs (jobs) rely on the remoting features of Windows PowerShell V2. To use jobs, Windows PowerShell remoting must be enabled, even if the job runs only on the local computer. This update helps make websites designed for older browsers look better in Internet Explorer 8. To take advantage of this update, you must have “Include updated website lists from Microsoft” selected in Internet Explorer’s Compatibility View Settings.
Windows Internet Explorer 8 improves browser interoperability and advances the Web by delivering a better implementation of Web standards. While this is a move in the right direction, users might encounter compatibility issues with some sites that still rely on the behavior of previous versions of Internet Explorer. Microsoft understands the shift towards standards compatibility with Internet Explorer 8 may take some time to complete for each organization or webmaster. To bridge this transition, we offer the Compatibility View list. The list helps make websites designed for older browsers look better in Internet Explorer 8.

The FastCGI Extension for Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 and 5.1 enables popular application frameworks (such as PHP) to be hosted on the IIS web server in a high-performance and reliable way.
The FastCGI Extension for IIS 6.0 and 5.1 enables popular application frameworks that support FastCGI protocol to be hosted on the IIS web server in a high-performance and reliable way. FastCGI provides a high-performance alternative to the Common Gateway Interface (CGI), a standard way of interfacing external applications with Web servers that has been supported as part of the IIS feature-set since the very first release. CGI programs are executables launched by the web server for each request in order to process the request and generate dynamic responses that are sent back to the client. Because many of these frameworks do not support multi-threaded execution, CGI enables them to execute reliably on IIS by executing exactly one request per process. Unfortunately, it provides poor performance due to the high cost of starting and shutting down a process for each request. FastCGI addresses the performance issues inherent to CGI by providing a mechanism to reuse a single process over and over again for many requests. Additionally, FastCGI maintains compatibility with non-thread-safe libraries by providing a pool of reusable processes and ensuring that each process will only handle one request at a time

As of Friday of last week, I am part of the DPE - Developer and Platform Evangelism team at Microsoft. My previous team was always sort of a dotted line to this org but now it is official. What I do as an IT Evangelist doesn't change much - I will still be reaching out to IT Pro's and speaking about our products and technologies. But there will be a lot more opportunity to connect with local groups and partners which I am very much looking forward to. This is one area that I have always wanted to dive into but have not taken advantage of. I am particularly interested in working with and starting up some local user groups.
If you are interested in starting a User Group in the NorthWest, please let me know!
I am also slowly updating my Facebook and other social networking accounts. I have spent a lot more time reading and lurking then joining in the conversations. That needs to change so I am refreshing the services I want to be a part of and ditching the ones that don't do anything for me. Look for a post later this week on those updates.
I have a webcast this Friday entitled - Consolidation and Rapid Provisioning. I will be talking about System Center Virtual machine Manger and how it can be used to quickly provision new servers and consolidate physical machines to virtual.
Finally, I know I have not been nearly as active as a blogger in recent months. My goal of a blog post a day fizzled right around Thanksgiving. The holidays and quite frankly, the uncertainty of how things would flesh out with the economy and jobs took a toll on me. One thing I have recognized though in the past few months is the importance of connectedness and staying in touch with personal and business relationships. I have decided to revamp my blog a bit so you will see some cosmetic changes and likely some blog focus changes.
I have my first 1-1 meeting with my new manager (Scott Kerfoot) in just over an hour so I will have a much better feel for the directions I will be taking after that.
As always, let me know what I can help you with and I will get you in touch with the right people!
You can grab it here - Internet explorer 8 RC1.
If you are running a beta of Windows 7, don't download from the link above. There will be a separate refresh of the IE8 for Windows 7.
Internet Explorer 8 RC1 is much faster than previous versions of Internet Explorer, which you will notice right away. You will also notice some cool new features that will make your surfing experience faster, easier and a whole lot safer.
Accelerators
· Highlight a street address in your Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, or other web mail account, right-click on the blue button that appears, and hover over “Map with Live Search.” Presto! You’ll see the map with the location right there—no more copying and pasting street addresses from web mail to a mapping site. Plus, you can choose what mapping service you want to use.
Instant Search
· Go to the search box in the top right, and type a search item—see how the enhanced Instant Search Box is more helpful, providing real-time search suggestions, including images, from your chosen search provider.
InPrivate Browsing
· Click on a new tab, and see the options that are presented there, including “InPrivate Browsing.” Click InPrivate Browsing and watch what happens—you are now in a browser session that is leaving no trail behind, so research gift suggestions for your significant other to your heart’s content without worrying about who might pick up the crumbs after you. Personally, I am going to use this so the wife doesn't see all of the World of Warcraft sites I am reading up on! (she hates that games....)
Harder to see are the many security enhancements that will help keep you protected against the ever-evolving online threats—things like protection from cross-site scripting attacks that no other browser offers. You can read more about all of these features at the IE8 Features site.
Just a reminder about the webcast I am delivering today on System Center Virtual Machine Manager. We start at 8am Pacific time. I believe some of the other US It Evangelists will also be attending to help answer questions.
