Infrastructure Planning and Design

Brief Description

The Infrastructure Planning and Design (IPD) guides are the next version of Windows Server System Reference Architecture. The guides in this series help clarify and streamline design processes for Microsoft infrastructure technologies, with each guide addressing a unique infrastructure technology or scenario.

Overview

Infrastructure Planning and Design guides share a common structure, including:

  • Definition of the technical decision flow through the planning process.
  • Listing of decisions to be made and the commonly available options and considerations.
  • Relating the decisions and options to the business in terms of cost, complexity, and other characteristics.
  • Framing decisions in terms of additional questions to the business to ensure a comprehensive alignment with the appropriate business landscape.

These guides complement product documentation by focusing on infrastructure design options.
Each guide leads the reader through critical infrastructure design decisions, in the appropriate order, evaluating the available options for each decision against its impact on critical characteristics of the infrastructure. The IPD Series highlights when service and infrastructure goals should be validated with the organization and provides additional questions that should be asked of service stakeholders and decision makers.
IPD consists of the following downloadable packages:

  • New! Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 with R2
  • New! Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5
  • Windows Server 2008 File Services
  • Windows Server 2008 Print Services

Overview

The Active Directory Management Pack provides both proactive and reactive monitoring of your Active Directory deployment. It monitors events that are placed in the Application, System, and Service event logs by various Active Directory components and subsystems. It also monitors the overall health of the Active Directory system and alerts you to critical performance issues. This management pack monitors the services provided by the domain controller. It provides information in addition to that collected directly on the domain controller about whether they are available by running synthetic transactions against the directory service, such as Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) binds and LDAP pings.

UI Automation Community Promise Specification

Brief Description

This download contains the Community Promise Specification for UI Automation.

Overview

This download contains the Community Promise Specification for UI Automation.
Microsoft UI Automation is the new accessibility framework for Microsoft Windows®, available on all operating systems that support Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). UI Automation provides programmatic access to most user interface (UI) elements on the desktop, enabling assistive technology products such as screen readers to provide information about the UI to end users and to manipulate the UI by means other than standard input.
UI Automation also allows automated test scripts to interact with the UI. UI Automation client applications can be written with the assurance that they will work on multiple frameworks. The UI Automation core masks any differences in the frameworks that underlie various pieces of UI. For example, the Content property of a WPF button, the Caption property of a Win32 button, and the ALT property of an HTML image are all mapped to a single property, Name, in the UI Automation view.
UI Automation provides full functionality in Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. UI Automation providers offer some support for Microsoft Active Accessibility client applications, through a built-in bridging service.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Support

Brief Description

This update enables developers to use Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 with Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

Overview

This update resolves the following error that when you try to use Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 design tools to open a database connection to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 :
“This server version is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 are supported.”
This update addresses this issue and enables the following Visual Studio functionality for SQL Server 2008:

  • Server Explorer successfully connects to SQL Server 2008, and database objects such as stored procedures and table data can be viewed and edited. Note that table schemas cannot be viewed or edited in this release.
  • SQL CLR projects that target SQL Server 2008 can be created and deployed to the server.
  • T-SQL and SQL CLR debugging are now enabled for SQL Server 2008.
  • Data binding features in Client and Web Projects are enabled.

This update does not support the following features for SQL Server 2008:

SQL Server 2008 White Paper: Analysis Services Performance Guide

Brief Description

This white paper describes how application developers can apply query and processing performance-tuning techniques to their SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services OLAP solutions.

Overview

Because Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services query and processing performance tuning is a fairly broad subject, this white paper organizes performance tuning techniques into the following three segments.
Enhancing Query Performance - Query performance directly impacts the quality of the end user experience. As such, it is the primary benchmark used to evaluate the success of an online analytical processing (OLAP) implementation. Analysis Services provides a variety of mechanisms to accelerate query performance, including aggregations, caching, and indexed data retrieval. In addition, you can improve query performance by optimizing the design of your dimension attributes, cubes, and Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) queries.
Enhancing Processing Performance - Processing is the operation that refreshes data in an Analysis Services database. The faster the processing performance, the sooner users can access refreshed data. Analysis Services provides a variety of mechanisms that you can use to influence processing performance, including efficient dimension design, effective aggregations, partitions, and an economical processing strategy (for example, incremental vs. full refresh vs. proactive caching).
Tuning Server Resources – There are several engine settings that can be tuned that affect both querying and processing performance.

Security Features in Microsoft Online

Brief Description

This white paper describes how the Microsoft concern for security, as defined in the Trustworthy Computing initiative, has driven key features in the design, deployment, and operation of the Microsoft Online Services environment.
Security is critical to our customers: Online services from Microsoft were built from the ground-up to be more secure by design, secure by default, and secure in operation; validated by Cybertrust Certification and SAS 70 Type II attestation.

Overview

The benefits of software-plus-services (SPS) are often weighed against perceived costs in terms of security risks, and the potential for interrupted access to mission-critical business data.
Microsoft brings world-class experience in software design, development, deployment, and operations to its Microsoft Online Services offering, enabling businesses to gain considerable cost advantages while helping to avoid many of the security risks associated with Web-based software services.
Increased security in Microsoft Online services is derived from:
• Simplified automated access using single sign-on.
• Reduced user intervention for security-related tasks.
• Automated software and service updates.
• Comprehensive implementation of leading-edge, industry-standard network security and encryption protocols.
• Mature applications designed, built, tested, and deployed according to Microsoft- established software development disciplines.
