Microsoft SQL Server Management Pack for Operations Manager 2007

Brief Description

The Microsoft SQL Server Management Pack for Operations Manager 2007 provides discovery and monitoring of SQL Server 2000, 2005 and 2008.

Overview

The SQL Server Management Pack provides the capabilities for Operations Manager 2007 to discover SQL Server 2000, 2005 and 2008 installations and components and to monitor them, primarily from the perspective of availability and performance. The availability and performance monitoring is done using a combination of scripts and native Operations Manager capabilities.
Note: Scripts in the SQL Server 2008 management pack rely on SQL Data Management Objects (SQL-DMO) to query information from the SQL Server. SQL-DMO is now deprecated and is not shipped as a part of SQL Server 2008. Every system with SQL Server 2008 that will be monitored must have SQL-DMO installed from the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components. For instructions on how to download and install the SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components refer to the management pack guide.
Feature Bullet Summary:
The following list gives an overview of the features of the SQL Server management pack. Refer to the SQL Server management pack guide for more detail.

  • Support for Enterprise, Standard and Express editions of SQL Server 2000, 2005 and 2008 and 32bit, 64bit and ia64 architectures.
  • Support for both simple and complex SQL configurations such as clustered installations, multiple instances and 32bit roles running on a 64bit OS. For full details on supported configurations refer to the guide included with the management pack.
  • Discovery and monitoring of SQL Server roles such as DB Engine, Reporting Services, Analysis Services, Integrations Services.
  • Discovery of SQL components such as databases, the SQL Agent and SQL jobs.
  • Over 20 views covering areas such as database free space, SQL related performance, SQL related alerts, and lists of the various SQL roles and components which are discovered and their related state.
  • Reports for longer-term analysis of common problem areas related to SQL Server such as SQL Server lock analysis and top deadlocked databases, SQL Server service pack levels across discovered roles, user connection activity. Likewise the generic reports from the Microsoft Generic Report Library can be used against the roles and components discovered by the SQL MPs to review availability and performance across many systems and over longer periods of time.
  • Role and component specific tasks which provide access to common tools, triage information, or corrective actions without needing to leave the Operations Console in most cases.
  • Monitoring of databases covers database status, database free space, log shipping monitoring for both the source and destination, and transaction log free space.
  • Monitoring of key SQL related services.
  • Monitoring for persistent SPID blocking.
  • Monitoring of numerous SQL events and performance data points. Alerts bring the issue to your attention and provide knowledge on the impact and possible resolutions.

Microsoft Sync Framework v2.0 CTP1

Brief Description

Microsoft Sync Framework is a comprehensive synchronization platform that enables collaboration and offline scenarios for applications, services, and devices. Using Microsoft Sync Framework, developers can build applications that synchronize data from any source using any protocol over any network.

Overview

Sync Framework Overview
Microsoft Sync Framework provides a synchronization platform that caters to the following scenarios, in which data needs to be synchronized between multiple data sources:

  • A number of users are collaborating and need to be able to access and update a set of data.
  • A user wants to access and update his or her data in multiple locations – on a desktop, on a device, using a Web browser, etc.
  • A user wants to download data from a server or service and take that data offline to a client store. The data can then be accessed and updated by the user even when not connected to the server or service.

Microsoft Sync Framework makes no assumptions about how data is stored or transmitted. Sync Framework places no restrictions on the type of data sources that can be synchronized, the protocol and network that are used to communicate with each data source , or the type of synchronization topology that is used. A data source can be synchronized with any other data source in any order; full peer-to-peer synchronization topologies are supported.
In order to cater to any data source, Sync Framework uses a provider model, with each sync provider being responsible for synchronizing a particular type of data source (or replica). Sync Framework is used to author providers and is used to perform the actual synchronization between the providers.
As well as enabling providers to be authored, Sync Framework includes several built-in providers:

  • Sync Services for ADO.NET, which is used to synchronize databases for offline and collaborative scenarios.
  • Sync Services for File Systems, which is used to synchronize files and folders in an NTFS or FAT file system.
  • Sync Services for FeedSync, which is used to synchronize RSS and Atom feeds with data in a local store.

Sync Framework 2.0
Sync Framework 2.0 expands on the capabilities offered by Sync Framework 1.0:

  • Adds features that cater to new scenarios or scenarios that were difficult to support.
  • Reduces the amount of work required to develop providers.
  • Supports more data sources with new built-in providers.

The major new features included in this initial CTP are:

  • Simple Providers: Reduces the amount of work required to develop providers, especially when the data source has very few synchronization-related capabilities, such as change-tracking. The goal is to enable a developer to write a provider without having to become a synchronization expert. The majority of the code that is required for a simple provider is limited to that responsible for interacting with the data source.
  • Change Unit Filtering: Different data sources can have different representations of the same data types, with some data sources offering a richer and more complete representation than others. This is especially true when you compare data type representations on a PC and on a device; the device will often support only a subset of the data supported by the PC. Sync Framework caters to scenarios in which a mixture of data sources is being synchronized, each with a different representation of the data type. Filtering support has been added to enable a provider to specify that the replica it serves is only able to store a subset of the data. The synchronization metadata and synchronization process have both been enhanced to handle this filtering efficiently.
  • Filter negotiation: When a destination data source is only storing a subset of data, then it is more efficient if the source provider uses a filter to enumerate only the data that can be stored by the destination. Filter negotiation allows a destination provider to specify it would like one or more filters to be used by the source provider; the source provider can accept or reject a filter. If a source provider does not support the requested filters then the destination provider can choose to receive all the data and do the filtering itself. Sync Framework is responsible for calling the providers appropriately to negotiate filter usage.

Known Issues
The following issues and limitations are known to exist in CTP1 and will be addressed in future releases.
Installation:

  • This CTP release cannot be installed on a computer that has an earlier version of Sync Framework installed. This means that it is not possible to upgrade from a previous version of Sync Framework, or to have the new CTP operate side-by-side with a previous version.
  • Interoperability between Sync Framework 1.0 and 2.0 components is not yet supported.
  • The install folder name is still named v1.0.
  • Only an English version of this CTP is available.

Simple Providers

  • Synchronizing a managed simple provider with a native simple provider using the managed synchronization orchestrator (SyncOrchestrator) is not supported.
  • In managed code only the metadata store provided with Sync Framework Metadata Storage Services can be used (SqlMetadataStore); a custom metadata store is not yet supported. In native code, any store that implements ISyncMetadataStore can be used.
  • When using a simple provider, an item change might take two synchronization sessions to be applied if there is a temporary constraint conflict during change application for that item. A temporary constraint conflict occurs when multiple changes are being applied for an item and an earlier change cannot be applied due to a constraint error, but can be applied after other changes have been made. For example, a new item “A” is being created and the existing item “A” is being renamed – the new item “A” can’t be created until the existing item “A” is renamed.

Download Contents
The download ZIP file contains the following components:

  • SyncSetup.exe: Run this executable to install all Sync Framework components
  • Synchronization.msi: Core runtime components of Sync Framework
  • ProviderServices.msi: Simple providers, Metadata Storage Services, and Sync Services for File Systems

Microsoft® Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR implements support for SQL Server 2008.

Overview

In addition to providing support for SQL Server 2008 database projects, this release incorporates many previously released Power Tools as well as several new features. The new features include distinct Build and Deploy phases, Static Code Analysis and improved integration with SQL CLR projects.
Database Edition no longer requires a Design Database. Therefore, it is no longer necessary to install an instance of SQL Express or SQL Server prior to using Database Edition.
SQL Server Support

  • SQL Server 2008
    • All new data types:
      • Intrinsic (date, datetime2, datetimeoffset, time)
      • Built-in SQL CLR types (geography, geometry, hierarchyid)
    • New DML
      • Merge, table parameters, …
  • SQL Server Configuration Options
    • Server option settings will be verified prior to deployment or set during deployment
Additional 1st Class Object Type Support

Windows SharePoint Services Add-in for Windows Essential Business Server

Brief Description

Install and Manage Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with Service Pack 1 on the Windows Essential Business Server Management Server via Add-In

Overview

The Windows SharePoint Services Add-In provides a dashboard view of all Windows SharePoint Services sites hosted by the Windows Essential Business Server 2008 Management Server. Sites based on Windows SharePoint Services, take file storage to a new level, providing communities for team collaboration that make it possible for users to work together on documents, tasks, and events, and make it easier for them to share contacts and other information.
This add-in allows administrators the ability to see a consolidated view of information about each site. This information is normally scattered across multiple Windows SharePoint Services Administration pages (like quota sizes, site collection information, administrator/contributor/visitor groups and members). Additionally, the add-in also allows administrators to manage permissions to the sites using Active Directory and smart wizards to create sites and site collections.
The installation package performs the following tasks:
1. Installs Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with Service Pack 1 on the Management Server.
Note: The add-in can administer only the Windows SharePoint Services sites that are hosted on the Management Server. It cannot administer sites that are hosted on other servers. However, you can continue to use Windows SharePoint Services on those servers, or you can migrate your existing data so that it is managed from the Management Server.
2. Gives you the option to store the Windows SharePoint Services data in a SQL Server database.
Note: It is highly recommended that you use SQL Server to store the data. This helps with data management and back-up. SQL Server is included in the Windows EBS Premium. You should install SQL Server before you install Windows SharePoint Services.
3. Configures a Windows SharePoint Services Web URL using a name that you choose (for example, http://internalweb or http://companyweb).
4. Installs the Windows SharePoint Services Add-In on the Business Applications tab of the Windows EBS Administration Console. You can use the add-in to perform administrative tasks such as creating a new site collection and managing permissions for the site.
5. Configures the Windows SharePoint Services Web URL in Windows EBS Remote Web Workplace allowing you to securely access the site from remote locations with internet access.

Microsoft Security Assessment Tool 4.0

Brief Description

The Microsoft Security Assessment Tool (MSAT) is a risk-assessment application designed to provide information and recommendations about best practices for security within an information technology (IT) infrastructure.

Overview

The Microsoft Security Assessment Tool 4.0 is the revised version of the original Microsoft Security Risk Self-Assessment Tool (MSRSAT), released in 2004 and the Microsoft Security Assessment Tool 2.0 released in 2006. Security issues have evolved since 2004 so additional questions and answers were needed to ensure you had a comprehensive toolset to become more aware of the evolving security threat landscape that could impact your organization.
The tool employs a holistic approach to measuring your security posture by covering topics across people, process, and technology. Findings are coupled with prescriptive guidance and recommended mitigation efforts, including links to more information for additional industry guidance. These resources may assist you in keeping you aware of specific tools and methods that can help change the security posture of your IT environment.
There are two assessments that define the Microsoft Security Assessment Tool:

  • Business Risk Profile Assessment
  • Defense in Depth Assessment (UPDATED)

The questions identified in the survey portion of the tool and the associated answers are derived from commonly accepted best practices around security, both general and specific. The questions and the recommendations that the tool offers are based on standards such as ISO 17799 and NIST-800.x, as well as recommendations and prescriptive guidance from Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing Group and additional security resources valued in the industry.
After completing an Assessment, you will gain access to a detailed report of your results. You may also compare your results with those of your peers (by industry and company size), provided that you upload your results anonymously to the secure MSAT Web server. When you upload your data the application will simultaneously retrieve the most recent data available. To be able to provide this comparative data, we need customers such as you to upload their information. All information is kept strictly confidential and no personally identifiable information whatsoever will be sent. For more information on Microsoft's privacy policy, please visit: http://www.microsoft.com/info/privacy.mspx.
