Windows Server Operating System Management Pack for Operations Manager 2007

Brief Description

The Windows Server Operating System Management Pack provides the fundamental monitoring basics for computers running the Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003 and 2008 Operating System.

Overview

The Windows Server Operating System Management Pack consists of the following five management packs: Microsoft Windows Server Library, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Discovery, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Monitoring, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. The Microsoft Windows Server management packs monitor the performance, health, and availability of Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000 Server.
By detecting, alerting on, and automatically responding to critical events and performance indicators, management packs reduce resolution times for issues and increase the overall availability and performance of your Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000 Server operating systems, thereby helping to reduce the total cost of ownership.
Feature Summary

  • Availability
    • Key Operating System Services: Required services are checked for status (for example, running, not running, or paused).
    • Storage: Logical hard drives are checked for availability, sufficient free space, and integrity of the NTFS partition.
    • Network: Network adapters are checked for connection health, name and IP address conflicts.
  • Performance
    • Processor: System processor(s) performance is checked system-wide. Processors can optionally be monitored on a per processor basis.
    • • Memory: Memory consisting of physical memory and virtual memory (also known as page files) is monitored using the following performance indicators:
      • Available memory (in MB)
      • Pages per second
      • Page file percent usage
    • Disks and Partitions: Logical disks/partitions and physical disks are monitored, and performance data is collected for average disk seconds per read, disk seconds per write, and disk seconds per transfer. Depending on which version of the operating system is being monitored, either logical or physical monitoring is enabled by default. Refer to the MP guide for more detail.
    • Network Adapter: Network adapters are monitored for the number of bytes received per second, the number of bytes sent per second, and the total bytes per second. In addition, the health state of the network adapter is evaluated and is set to Healthy if connected and Critical if disconnected.

Overview

The Microsoft VHD format is the common virtualization file format for Virtual PC, Virtual Server 2005 and Hyper-V that provides a uniform product support system, and provides more seamless manageability, security, reliability and cost-efficiency for customers.
This VHD release is available in English only and is for evaluation and testing purposes. Evaluating Windows Server2008 software does not require product activation or entering a product key. Any edition of Windows Server 2008 may be installed without activation and evaluated for an initial 60 days.
If you need more time to evaluate Windows Server 2008, the 60 day evaluation period may be reset (or re-armed) three times, extending the original 60 day evaluation period by up to 180 days for a total possible evaluation time of 240 days. After this time, you will need to uninstall the software or upgrade to a fully-licensed version of Windows Server 2008.
If you wish to extend the initial evaluation and testing period, please go here and follow the instructions.
As this installation requires Hyper-V, you will need to have a base install of Windows Server 2008 (64bit edition), running Hyper-V. For more information on obtaining and installing the latest version of Hyper-V, please visit the Hyper-V Homepage.
Both virtual machines available here are running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition Evaluation. HPC Pack 2008 Fix for Job XML Import and Export Issues

Brief Description

This download fixes issues related to missing or lost properties when importing and exporting Job XML

Overview

This update to the Microsoft HPC Pack (KB958512) provides fixes to a couple of issues involving job XML export and import, namely:
• The XML sent to Submission Filters is using the v1 schema, a number of properties are missing
• When creating of a job based on a non-indented XML file, some properties may be lost during import
These issues were fixed in the following way:
• XML sent to Job Submission Filters is now using the v2 schema
• Job XML import is no longer whitespace sensitive
Impact:
Users who have written Job Submission Filters that parse job XML may be impacted since the XML output to the submission filter will be different. Such users will need to update the XML-parsing in their Submission Filter code to handle the v2 job XML schema.
For users who plan on writing Job Submission Filter, it is strongly recommended that you install this update before implementing your filter.

.NET Rocks! - Michael Isard on Dryad

Brief Description

Richard and Carl talk to Michael Isard about Dryad, a grid computing and clustering project from Microsoft.

Overview

Michael Isard received his D.Phil in computer vision from the Oxford University Engineering Science Department in 1998. In 1999 has worked for Microsoft Research in Silicon Valley since 2002. The majority of his early research was in the field of visual tracking and sequential filtering, and he helped to introduce particle filters to the computer vision community with the Condensation algorithm. Current research projects cover a range from inference methods for Bayesian networks with applications in visual tracking and dense stereo estimation; to programming models for large-scale distributed systems and many-core processor architectures. Michael led the Dryad project to build a large-scale distributed execution platform for datacenters that is now widely used internally by Microsoft product groups. He has recently started working with several colleagues on AME, a new concurrent programming model that makes use of transactional memory without explicit atomic blocks. He has also been collaborating with Andrew Zisserman's Visual Geometry Group in Oxford on various aspects of object retrieval from large databases.

.NET Rocks! - Frans Bouma on ORM!

Brief Description

Carl and Richard talk to Frans Bouma about his thoughts on the ORM revolution, his products, and the Entity Framework. Great stuff!

Overview

Frans Bouma started programming in 1986 on a Toshiba MSX-1, at the age of 16. After graduating with a bachelor degree in Computer Science from the 'Hogeschool Enschede' in the Netherlands in 1994, he started working with 4GL systems and post-relational databases, like uniVerse. In 1996 he founded Solutions Design, a company for database driven web-application development. As the lead developer, he developed medium to large enterprise web applications using SqlServer, AS400, COM+, VC++, Visual Basic and Asp. In 2001 Solution Design produced a content management system completely based on Microsoft technologies like SqlServer 2000, COM+, VC++, VB6 and asp. In 2002 Frans developed in C# his first .NET application, the open source LLBLGen code generator for SqlServer stored procedures and .NET classes. Due to the worldwide success of LLBLGen, Frans designed and developed in 2003 for Solutions Design the O/R mapper and code generator LLBLGen Pro, which is currently one of the market-leading data-access solutions for .NET, C# and VB.NET. Frans received for his community efforts the MVP reward for C# in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 and works full time on LLBLGen Pro enhancements. In 2006, HnD, a full featured support system/forum system for ASP.NET 2.0 was released as open source (GPL), written and designed by Frans Bouma.

Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 CTP (October 2008) Documentation

Brief Description

Download documentation for Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 CTP (October 2008). Documentation is available for Sync Framework core components, Sync Services for ADO.NET, Metadata Storage Service, Sync Services for File Systems, and Sync Services for FeedSync.

Overview

Microsoft Sync Framework is a comprehensive synchronization platform that enables collaboration and offline access for applications, services, and devices. The documentation available from this Web site covers the following technologies:

  • Sync Framework core components, which are used to create synchronization providers for any type of data store.
  • Sync Services for ADO.NET, which is used to synchronize databases for offline and collaborative scenarios.
  • Metadata Storage Service, which is used to store synchronization metadata in a lightweight data store.
  • Sync Services for File Systems, which is used to synchronize files and folders in a file system.
  • Sync Services for FeedSync, which is used to synchronize RSS and Atom feeds with data in a local store.

This release includes the following new features, which are described in the topic “What's New in Sync Framework 2.0” that is included in the core and metadata storage documentation sets:

  • Simple provider API: enables developers to quickly implement providers for stores that do not support change tracking or that support basic tracking.
  • Change unit filtering: enables a replica to store only a subset of the change units that are defined for the items it synchronizes.
  • Provider-negotiated filters: enables the source and destination providers to negotiate which filter should be used by the source provider during change enumeration.
  • Provider converters: enables providers that implement different base interfaces to synchronize with each other.
  • Updated knowledge structure and additional interfaces: provides backwards compatible changes to how synchronization knowledge is stored and manipulated.
  • Serialization for Metadata Storage Service: provides interfaces that serialize and deserialize metadata for a replica between a canonical metadata file format and version-specific Metadata Storage Services store formats.

Note: This CTP does not include any updates to Sync Services for ADO.NET.

UI Automation Community Promise Specification

Brief Description

This download contains the Community Promise Specification for UI Automation.

Overview

This download contains the Community Promise Specification for UI Automation.
Microsoft UI Automation is the new accessibility framework for Microsoft Windows®, available on all operating systems that support Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). UI Automation provides programmatic access to most user interface (UI) elements on the desktop, enabling assistive technology products such as screen readers to provide information about the UI to end users and to manipulate the UI by means other than standard input.
UI Automation also allows automated test scripts to interact with the UI. UI Automation client applications can be written with the assurance that they will work on multiple frameworks. The UI Automation core masks any differences in the frameworks that underlie various pieces of UI. For example, the Content property of a WPF button, the Caption property of a Win32 button, and the ALT property of an HTML image are all mapped to a single property, Name, in the UI Automation view.
UI Automation provides full functionality in Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. UI Automation providers offer some support for Microsoft Active Accessibility client applications, through a built-in bridging service.

This session examines the tools, techniques, and challenges of producing special effects for Bungie’s Halo 3 from an artist’s perspective. The Halo engine’s custom particle system was rebuilt from the ground up to take full advantage of the Xbox 360 hardware. We take a look at the editing tools that are at the heart of that system. Beyond particles, we look at other graphical elements that are orchestrated to create some of the more complex effect events in the game.
