Windows HPC Server 2008 (HPCS) provides enterprise-class tools, performance, & scalability for a highly productive HPC environment. HPCS provides a complete & integrated cluster environment including the OS, Job Scheduler, Message Passing Interface v2 (MPI2) support, cluster management & monitoring.
Windows HPC Server 2008 Microsoft® Windows® HPC Server 2008 (HPCS), the next generation of high performance computing (HPC), provides enterprise-class tools, performance, and scalability for a highly productive HPC environment. HPCS provides a complete and integrated cluster environment including the operating system, a Job Scheduler, Message Passing Interface v2 (MPI2) support, and cluster management and monitoring components. Built on Windows Server® 2008 64-bit technology, HPCS can efficiently scale to thousands of processing cores and includes a management console that helps proactively monitor and maintain system health and stability. Job scheduling interoperability and flexibility enables integration between Windows and Linux-based HPC platforms, and supports batch and service-oriented architecture (SOA) workloads. Enhanced productivity, scalable performance, and ease of use are some of the features that make Windows HPC Server 2008 best-of-breed for Windows environments. Windows HPC Server 2008 can help shorten user time-to-insight for HPC workloads through easier deployment and management. By using the existing Windows-based information technology (IT) infrastructure, HPCS simplifies management, security, and storage for the cluster, and provides seamless access from the desktop. HPCS includes improved provisioning based on the Windows Server 2008 Windows Deployment Services technology, a faster Microsoft Message Passing Interface (MS-MPI) that includes new NetworkDirect support, an advanced Job Scheduler, and a new management interface built on the Microsoft® System Center 2007 user interface (UI), which has support for Windows PowerShell™ as a preferred scripting interface. Windows HPC Server 2008 integrates with other Microsoft products to help increase HPC productivity and improve the overall end-user experience. This includes collaboration through Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007 and the Windows Workflow Foundation, as well as improved management and efficiency by integrating with System Center 2007. Through integration with the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), Windows HPC Server 2008 allows developers working with SOA applications to harness the power of parallel computing offered by HPC solutions. HPCS uses the failover clustering capabilities of Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and of Microsoft® SQL Server® to provide high availability and redundancy of the head node in your HPC cluster. Microsoft® Response Point™ is phone system software designed for small businesses with 1 to 50 employees. The intuitive management programs, voice-activated user interface, and rich feature set make Response Point easy to configure, manage, and use. D-Link, Syspine, and Aastra offer complete systems that are bundled in affordable starter packages.
Microsoft® Response Point™ 1.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1) introduces new-and-improved features that expand your voice service options, empower the administrator to better manage the system, and enhance the phone system experience for everyday users and callers. In Service Pack 1, Response Point is equipped with a VoIP gateway that allows you to set up cost-saving VoIP service, offered through Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSPs). With VoIP service, you can configure direct-dial numbers so that your business can have multiple phone numbers, without the hassle and cost of setting up new analog phone lines. Configure VoIP service, analog service, or a combination of both voice services—in SP1, the choice is now yours. Response Point Administrator gives you more control over how you manage the system. In this service pack, you can monitor and analyze call activity; upgrade phones and phone line adapters when the hardware manufacturer releases the latest firmware; customize answers to questions that callers frequently ask the Automated Receptionist; restrict access on phones in common areas; and play music for callers waiting in park. Response Point Assistant improves the overall experience for everyday users and callers. In this service pack, you can click-to-call contacts with just two mouse-clicks; specify the most cost-effective voice service for your contacts; and view in-call and parked-call status, so that you can see whether other users are on or off the phone, and whether any parked calls are waiting to be retrieved.

Archived Samples for Internet Explorer Archived content. No warranty is made as to technical accuracy. Content may contain URLs that were valid when originally published, but now link to sites or pages that no longer exist.
This section contains a variety of archived samples to assist IT Professionals and Web Developers. All samples may be downloaded. Colbtn.exe The COLBTN example shows a control that accesses and changes the HTML document in which it is contained. DrillerMFC.exe and DrillerVB.exe There are two Drill samples, both do the same thing, however one is written using MFC and the other is written using Visual Basic. The Driller (MFC) sample is an MFC based control host, that hosts the WebBrowser Control as part of another application. The buttons and address input are supplied by the hosting application and commands are sent to the WebBrowser control on the form. Entering a URL in the address field on the form will result in the WebBrowser control navigating to that page. Additionally, the Drill samples show how a hosting application can "drill" into the WebBrowser control and investigate the loaded HTML document. In this case the host walks the ALL collection of the document object of the loaded html page using Dynamic HTML and populate a list box with each element encountered. Edannotator.exe The Edit Designer Annotator sample implements an IHTMLEditDesigner interface that enables the user to read, add, and modify comments in a document. It demonstrates important features of edit designer implementation. EditCommands.exe The MSHTML Editor provides a full complement of commands that enable you to modify a document. The commands to edit a document operate on the current selection. They enable you to perform many font and page customization tasks EditFeatures.exe You can activate a number of optional features to enhance the MSHTML Editor's default behavior. The commands used to modify the Editor's behavior can be used from C++. Most of these commands work only when the browser is in design mode. They are turned off when the Editor is deactivated or the WebBrowser navigates to a new page. EditGlyphs.exe Editing glyphs are images that represent the tags formatting a Web page. Editing glyphs give users visual clues about the structure of a page, and enable users to do more precise editing than they could without glyphs. The MSHTML Editor enables you to represent most tags with your own custom images. However, some tags can't have glyph images. For instance, a TABLE tag can be assigned an image to show where the table as a whole is anchored in the document, but images cannot be assigned to the tags that format within the table, like TD and TH. Custom glyphs can only be used from C++, and work only when DesignMode is "On." EditHost.exe IHTMLEdit Host provides a way to control how elements are resized and moved when the user grabs and drags the handles on a control element. For instance, you could cause an element to resize or move by specific increments (a snap-to-grid feature), limit resizing to a minimum or maximum size, or constrain the area to which an element can be moved. The use of IHTMLEditHost is limited to applications hosting MSHTML or the WebBrowser control. IHTMLEditHost cannot be used with binary behaviors or rendering behaviors. Edmonitor.exe An edit designer is a COM component that allows you to customize the MSHTML Editor. The only interface an edit designer must implement is IHTMLEditDesigner, which has four methods that act as callback routines. The MSHTML Editor calls these methods in response to events occurring in the Editor. Htmldlg.exe HTML Dialog is a simple example that demonstrates how to use the ShowHTMLDialog function. This example shows how to use the function and pass parameters to and receive parameters from an HTML dialog box. The HTML source also shows how to access the parameters that are passed into the dialog box and set the return parameters from the dialog box using script. The HTML source for the dialog box is contained as a resource in the application itself and is accessed using the res: protocol. RenderBehave.exe Rendering behaviors enable you to perform custom drawing on a Web page using the Graphics Device Interface (GDI) or a drawing object such as Microsoft® DirectDraw® or Microsoft® Direct3D®. You might use rendering behaviors to provide a custom background or highlighting for elements, for instance, or to provide guidelines for laying out a page in a what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) editor. Walkall.exe This WALKALL sample demonstrates the use of MSHTML as a UI-less HTML parser.

This section contains a variety of archived samples to assist IT Professionals and Web Developers. All samples may be downloaded. Calendar.exe The calendar behavior is used to provide a quick and easy method for users to find and select a date. It can be used in any situation where date input is required, such as on a web page form, in utilities, or in applications. Colorpick.exe The colorpick behavior adds a color palette control to a Web page. The color palette allows users to select a specific color from the visual control. Selected colors are submitted as hexadecimal values if the control is embedded within a form. Coolbar.exe This behavior implements an Explorer-style toolbar. Dataselect.exe The dataselect behavior adds databinding capabilities to the SELECT element. Web pages that include a data source object can use dataselect to populate pull down menus and multi-select menus with field values from the data source. Menu.exe The menu behavior allows authors to create expanding and collapsing menus on Web pages. Each menu node can enclose other nodes or standard HTML elements, such as an anchor. Imagerollover.exe The imageRollover behavior provides a script-free method for web page authors to add rollover effects to images. It also adds limited button-like behavior by allowing the author to specify a replacement image in response to user click. The images used in this behavior will be downloaded and cached after the page loads, or sooner if they are needed in response to a user action. All methods and events are provided by the familiar events normally provided by an image. Mask.exe The mask edit behavior is applied to INPUT elements that allow data entry to provide a combination of restricted input as well as formatted output. When information is entered, visual cues are provided about the type of acceptable information, and feedback about incorrect entries. The behavior can be applied to many common types of forms fields, such as date, time, monetary, percentage and phone number formats. These masks can be applied through one of several preset formats. Movable.exe This behavior allows the web author to make page elements moveable via the mouse or through script. The movement can be limited to a set area, or to horizontal or vertical movement only. MPC.exe The mpc behavior adds a multipage control to a Web page. Authors can easily organize information using a common interface that is familiar to most users. Each page is accessed by a tab, which can be rendered at the top or bottom of the control. Rowover.exe This behavior adds striping, hovering and other useful features to regular and data-bound table rows. Slider.exe The slider behavior inserts a slider control into a Web page and is a method for Web authors to allow users to select a value from a gradient. A slider can be placed on the page with a vertical or horizontal orientation. Values are selected by dragging the slider with the mouse. Tick marks are provided according to an author-specified range. Tooltips.exe The ToolTip behavior enables authors to add a ToolTip to any element on the page. HTML, including images and CSS formatting, can be included in the ToolTip. Authors may also control the placement and duration of the ToolTip.

This white paper explores how you can use Microsoft Dynamics AX to support rapid growth and drive business success.
Microsoft recently researched the experience of nearly 200 companies with more than 250 PCs that have deployed one or more of the applications in the Microsoft Dynamics line of business management solutions. Among these companies, a common issue was rapid growth. The pain points most often cited were manual processes that cause mistakes and inefficiencies, the need for more functionalities, an inability to scale to support growth, integration problems, especially with the growing number of customer and partner systems, and a lack of operational insight. This white paper explores how you can use Microsoft Dynamics AX to support rapid growth and drive business success.

You may have noticed that I haven't posted any updates on the home network lately. I decided to halt my current plans and take another path. As a result I am looking for a "super server" of sorts. On that will virtualize most of the loads I need to run and also be expandable for many years going forward. I posted a similar request to some internal aliases and received some good advice and suggestions. I would like to open it up a little thogh so I am posting the request here as well.
The goal is to virtualize 6-10 of the PC's that run in the basement to one machine, then use SCVMM and DPM to manage and backup. I should note that some of the workloads are pretty insignificant but I will be moving two DC's, an Exchange server, a SQL Server, and a Web Server into the VM environment. SQL is not heavily used but Exchange and the Web server are (I host about 30 domains).
My thoughts are to get a machine that will be used for a number of years (I have PC's that are 10+ years old that I am going to decommission). My thoughts are to get a machine with the following minimums --
Dual Quad Core CPU's
16+ gigs of RAM
onboard SATA RAID
eSATA port
SCSI is an option but I would prefer to stick with SATA
on board Gigabit Ethernet (required and preferably two ports)
I am quite comfortable building my own systems so I welcome suggestions on specific MoBo's or even complete server systems. Price is a consideration but the system is going to be pricey no matter what so I am keeping an open mind.
What do you suggest?
Cheers!
....well....this would be a good reason to anyway.
Was perusing the news today and ran across this article over on SlashDot - Japan to get 1gbps Home Fiber Connections. Reading the article, it also notes that this is a synchronous connection so that is 1gbps in both directions. Talk about an awesome BitTorrent connection!
This afternoon I started typing up a post with links to a bunch of interesting tech stuff. Then I ran across this post by Scoble and realized he had already done all the heavy lifting. I scrapped my post and will share a few other tidbits....
WaMu sold to JP Morgan Chase - To this all I have to say is......Bwahahahahahaha! You would have to know my history with WaMu to understand why I am tickled that they went under. Suffice it to say I wrote an angry letter to them about 4 years ago predicting their failure. I feel vindicated. I have gone out of my way to NOT do any business with them for years now. They bought up my credit card company a couple years ago and I have been shopping ever since for a new company. Now I don't have to. I already have a Chase card...now I guess I will end up with two.
Kentucky Governor award control of 141 gambling related domain names - Again.....Bwaahahaha! This won't fly. The gambling sites aren't even in the US. If the state doesn't want their citizens gambling then send some IT people over to China to learn their nasty tricks. Block the sites. I am not for that, just saying it is a better option than seizing domain names. The gambling sites are businesses and should be allowed to operate.
Mistrial Declared in RIAA trial - Everyday People - 1 / Oppressive Recording Industry Regime - 0
We can make fun of Bush now....right? - Nuff Said....
I went to Windows Update tonight to patch up a new Vista VM I recently installed and got the shock of my life....NEW Vista Ultimate Extras! It's been a long time since we had any Extras come out. I haven't had a chance to play with any of them yet except for the Dreamscene stuff (which I should note I rarely have active), but Sarah in Tampa has a post up over at ON10 about the Tinker Game.
Three days ago I called my ISP to complain about very, very, very slow web page load times. While on the phone with the tech I hit a couple of speed test sites and saw that my overall download speed was what I expected - 8-10,000kbps. I told him I would check out my end and call back if I was still having issues.
I check email and things look like they are synched up. Then to hit some news sites and blogs and.....nothing. Looks like DNS is failing on some sites and sure enough, I can't telnet to any external DNS servers. Verify I didn't inadvertently block DNS with ISA....all good there. I decided to ping some external sites and that is when I find out nothing is visible beyond my DSL box.
That was roughly 13 hours ago.
Still no DSL. Using my WLAN card that barely gets a signal here at the house. One of the joys of living in the woods. (btw...here's a little tidbit....if the banner on this blog disappears, that is a pretty clear indication my home Internet service is offline. That is where that picture is hosted)
Ordinarily I wouldn't even be that upset about it being offline except for some work I wanted to get done that requires a rare VPN to work. I have some slides I need to put up on corpnet and some images to pull down. The latter I am not even going to consider with this aircard.
I also discovered that Sony Vegas Studio requires an Internet connection to activate. For that matter to even be usable in anything but trial mode it has to phone home. Ugh.
Finally, I was waxing nostalgic while complaining about how slow my WLAN card connection is. It is still many, many times faster than my first modem - a 300 baud AppleCat. Faster than my Hayes 300/1200. Faster than any one of several 2400's. Faster than my USR 9600 HST. After that there were probably a dozen 14.4-28.8-56k of varying makes and models before I made the jump to ISDN. Now we are up to a speed that compares to how bad the WLAN card is here at my house. Ugh.
I guess the absolute worse was discovering that since the DSL is out, I can't connect to XBox Live.
No Guitar Hero challenges tonight....
Cheers.....

This technical brief provides an in-depth look at the features and functionality of Windows Home Server Home Computer Backup and Restore.
Windows® Home Server will automatically backup your home computers to the home server and allow you to easily restore the entire computer or an individual file or folder to a previous point in time. The Windows Home Server Backup solution backs up only the data that has not already been backed up. Even if you have several copies of the same data on different computers, the data is backed up only once on your home server and your home server keeps track of what data was stored on each home computer on each day. This makes it efficient in the time it takes for backups to complete and the amount of space that is used on your home server.

The Group Policy Management Pack is focused on the delivery and application of Group Policy on infrastructure servers (for example, file servers, terminal servers, or Exchange servers) for Windows Server 2008 operating systems.
The Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Group Policy Management Pack for Operations Manager 2005 provides a way to monitor, respond to, and notify operations staff about the following:
The Group Policy Management Pack is focused on the delivery and application of Group Policy on infrastructure servers (for example, file servers, terminal servers, or Exchange servers) for Windows Server 2008 operating systems. This management pack is not intended for use on client computers (for example, portable computers or desktop computers). This is because the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Agent is required on each computer that is monitored by MOM 2005, and MOM 2005 cannot scale to thousands of clients. Group Policy is an infrastructure used to deliver and apply one or more desired configurations or policy settings to a set of targeted users and computers within an Active Directory environment. This infrastructure consists of a Group Policy engine and multiple client-side extensions (CSEs) responsible for reading specific policy settings on target client computers. The Software Installation extension of Group Policy provides on-demand software installation and automatic repair of applications. Group Policy offers a convenient method for distributing software, especially if you are already using Group Policy for other purposes (such as securing your client and server computers). The Scripts extension applies one or more scripts to a computer or users. Scripts applying to computers are run during startup and shutdown. Scripts applying to users are run during logon and logoff. The Registry extension allows you to use Group Policy to centrally manage client registry keys. This client-side extension is used to apply registry-based policy settings (Administrative templates) by creating and configuring the client registry keys. Release History:

Learn how to install Linux Fedora 8 Samba server for compatibility with Windows Active Directory.
This paper details the installation of a Linux (Fedora 8) Samba server for compatibility with a Windows Active Directory environment. This will allow both Windows users and Linux users access to the same shares during the execution of programs on the Windows based HPC cluster. The installation is detailed in such a fashion as to make it possible for relatively inexperienced administrators to replicate. Screen shots are used throughout the paper along with a narrative that explains not only what to do but why each step is necessary. The initial installation of the Fedora 8 based server is stock standard utilizing the defaults wherever possible. Once the base server is installed, the necessary steps are provided to install the Samba software and configure a set of simple shared files to be accessed from other systems. The final step is to join the new Samba server to the Windows domain and test the access to the shares from a Windows user on the Windows server and from a Windows domain user who is logged in to a Linux system, which is also a member of the domain.

Learn the typical installation procedure for a Linux-based HPC cluster package.
This paper describes the procedure for the installation of a Linux based HPC clustering package on a typical set of servers. A companion paper details the installation of the Windows HPC Server 2008 package on an identical set of server systems. Further papers detail the integrations that can be made between the authentication, file systems and job submission components Linux and Windows based clusters. Overall the installation has relatively few steps. This is mainly due to the fact that many of the decisions on the configuration of the cluster have already been made in the scripts that comprise the installation procedure. The process is fairly short (about an hour and a half to two hours for a small cluster), but the result is a “one size fits all” cluster. One issue with this technique is that several configuration options like the address of the master node are fixed at the time of installation. Although it is theoretically possible to change this value, in point of fact it is easier to reinstall the cluster than to try to change all of the configuration files that are involved.

Learn how Windows HPC Server 2008 job templates can help streamline the job submission process.
Job templates are powerful, easy to use, and can save time and effort for both users and IT administrators. Job templates serve as a pattern for the creation of jobs that meet the user’s processing needs, while also conforming to the organization’s resource allocation policies. For the IT administrator, job templates provide a way to control the job submission process—they provide a means of partitioning the cluster, prioritizing the jobs, and limiting the resources used by jobs. They let the IT administrator specify different handling for different types of jobs. For the user, job templates provide a way to easily submit a job without having to obtain an in-depth understanding of how the Job Scheduler works.

Learn a typical installation of HPCS.
This paper describes the procedure for the installation of a Windows HPC Server 2008 (HPCS) package on a typical set of servers in a self-contained environment, i.e. depending on no external networking services. A companion paper details the installation of the Linux based Rocks+ package on an identical set of server systems. Further papers detail the integrations that can be made between the authentication, file systems and job submission components Linux and Windows based clusters. Overall the installation has a significant number of steps. This is mainly due to the fact that most of the cluster configuration decisions are available to the person installing the cluster. As a result the installation process is slightly longer than the Rocks+ based counterpart, but the resulting cluster can be tailored very closely to the eventual application software that it will be executing. The resulting cluster is quite flexible. Most of the parameters of the cluster can be modified, in most cases through the GUI management tools.

Learn how to install and configure Linux to access an HPCS cluster.
This paper details the installation and configuration of a Linux operating system-based workstation, so that it can access a Windows HPC Server 2008 (HPCS) cluster. It is assumed that the Windows based cluster is a stock setup using the defaults wherever possible for simplicity. The configuration necessary for the computer to join a Windows domain is partially carried out in the base installation and partly in the configuration of security data files after the system is installed. The resulting system can be joined to a Windows domain (2008 Active Directory style) and domain users can log on to the system using their domain credentials (single sign on).

Learn the integration process and execution of HPC applications in HPCS and Linux environments.
Many system administrators are being asked to integrate a Windows HPC Server2008 (HPCS) based cluster into a Linux environment. This paper details the integration process as well as the execution of HPC applications in both environments through the use of the Sun Grid Engine (SGE) workload management system. To help the reader replicate this process, the steps start from bare metal (i.e. empty systems), and notes are provided as to why each step is required. The final target application is the HP Linpack benchmark from the University of Tennessee, which is used by multiple cluster owners run as a first trial of a new cluster. It serves to help verify that the cluster is fully functional and to give an indication of the ultimate performance of the cluster.

v1.0 Service Pack 1 (devices) The download package contains Microsoft Synchronization Services for ADO.NET v1.0 Service Pack 1 (devices)
Microsoft Synchronization Services for ADO.NET 1.0 provides the ability to synchronize data from disparate sources. Rather than simply replicating a database and its schema, the Synchronization Services application programming interface (API) provides a set of components to synchronize data between data services and a local store. Applications are increasingly used on mobile clients, such as laptops and devices that do not have a consistent or reliable network connection to a central server. It is crucial for these applications to work against a local copy of data on the client. Equally important is the need to synchronize the local copy of the data with a central server when a network connection is available. The Synchronization Services API, which is modeled after the ADO.NET data access APIs, gives you an intuitive way to synchronize data. It makes building applications for occasionally connected environments a logical extension of building applications where you can count on a consistent network connection. Synchronization Services for ADO.NET 1.0, which released with Visual Studio 2008, enabled synchronization between a server database and a SQL Compact 3.5 client database running on a desktop. With this download, you can also synchronize between a server database and a SQL Compact database on a Windows Mobile 5 or 6 device.

Expand.exe The menu behavior allows authors to create expanding and collapsing menus on Web pages.

Michael Arrington over at TechCrunch posted about the new commercials we are showing. I like them because they show the many different kinds of PC users that are out there. It really only scratches the surface though. Think about it.....when you are walking down the street, most of the people walking with you have a computer at home or work. Most of those people are using PC's. Now pay attention to who they are - everyday people. Extraordinary people. Normal people. Fantastic people. Common People.
*ding*! (Light Bulb moment!)
Maybe we can get William Shatner to do a commercial for us based on his version of "Common People"!!
A buddy of mine in SoCal (Thanks Luke!) sent a link to me last night. I have since watched the video a half a dozen times and I want to keep watching it.
Robots are cool....
If you are interested in downloading the slides used at our current TechNet sessions, you can grab those below

If you would like additional resources, my co-worker - Kevin Remde - created an excellent resources sheet that is posted to his blog

subtitled.......where to go if you want to be absolutely guaranteed NOT to see the Bill Gates/Jerry Seinfeld commercials
Millions of people have watched them on TV.
Anyone with an Internet connection can go to the Microsoft Press Pass site and not only view them online, but download them and watch them over and over and over again.
They are on YouTube.
There is one on the Windows Home Page.
They have been blogged about, linked, indexed, questioned quizzically, praised adoringly, bashed, laughed at, and skewered by all sorts of media....but I can't show them at my event in Berkeley California tomorrow.
Some members of my team followed the rules and asked if we could show the videos during our live events but we were shot down. I am sure there is all sorts of legalize in the background that is the real reason for not being able to show them. I could conjure up all kinds of reasons about why we are being told we can't show them, but that isn't really the point. The point is.....
The pee is in the pool....unless the pool gets drained completely, you can't help but be exposed to the pee.
The videos are out there. ANYONE can watch them. In fact, it is pretty difficult to not be exposed to them at this point.
Unless!....... you come to my event tomorrow. My event will be a Shoe Circus Free Zone. *I* can't show you the videos. But if you bring your own laptop, and you have an Internet connection, YOU can watch them.
Just don't do it while I am in the room.....

Ultrasound is a monitoring and troubleshooting tool for the File Replication Service (FRS).
Ultrasound is a monitoring and troubleshooting tool for the File Replication Service (FRS). FRS is a legacy technology that replicates files and folders that are stored in Distributed File System (DFS) folders or in the System Volume (SYSVOL) folder on domain controllers. Note: FRS was replaced by DFS Replication for replicating DFS folders in Windows Server 2003® R2, and for SYSVOL replication in domains using the Windows Server 2008 domain functional mode. Ultrasound measures the health of FRS replica sets by providing health ratings and historical information about the replica sets. Ultrasound also allows administrators to monitor the progress of replication and detect problems that can cause replication to become backlogged or stopped. There are three components to Ultrasound.

This sample application makes use of an AJAX/JavaScript client that communicates with the Microsoft Office Communicator Web Access 2007 server to provide a Web-based Live Chat solution that connects with a Microsoft Dynamics® CRM 4.0 server.
In this sample you will work with a server-based messaging bot capable of providing intelligent real time communications to multiple endpoints within an Office Communications Server environment. This bot communicates with customers through an AJAX-based Microsoft Office Communicator Web Access server. Messages are sent through an automated script managed by a Windows Workflow Foundation Sequential Workflow to create an intelligent automated response system. When a conversation between a customer and the bot is finished, the data that was gathered by the bot is stored in a queue hosted by a Windows Communication Foundation service. This allows live persons to take over the conversation and gather any further desired information. Once the live conversation is complete, the queued data can be sent directly to an active Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 server through a set of Web services.

This sample demonstrates how to add custom tabs to the Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 desktop client.
The tabs in Communicator 2007 host an instance of the Windows Internet Explorer Internet browser. When a tab is clicked, Communicator automatically passes the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) address for the current user as well as one or more contact SIP addresses. This enables developers to create Web applications that consume the SIPs and present relevant, SIP-tailored information to the end user, all within the Communicator client. This sample consists of virtual directory containing files that Communicator uses to configure the tabs, as well as a sample Web application that is displayed in a custom Communicator tab.

This sample illustrates using an intelligent bot to send an alert that is triggered by a workflow activity.
In the scenario for this sample, an order management application records new sales leads. If a new sales lead exceeds a predetermined dollar amount, the intelligent bot automatically reports this news via instant messaging to a specified manager. The bot also provides the manager with a menu of options for handling the sales lead. If the manager is unavailable, the bot queues the message until the manager becomes available.

This sample shows how to use the Unified Communications AJAX SDK to provide presence and chat functionality in a customer-facing Web site. This allows users of the Web site to chat with customer service representatives.
Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 provides secure and reliable instant messaging in which all end points are always authenticated against Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). While this security is necessary, it can make it very difficult to create solutions where one or more of the end users do not have access to an Active Directory account. This sample illustrates a solution that enables employees within a corporate domain to communicate directly and in real time with others outside the domain via a medium such as their corporate Web site.

This sample demonstrates using the Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 SDK to integrate presence and communication features into Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) clients. The controls are designed to be used in applications developed using the Microsoft Visual Studio development system.
The presence controls provide applications with presence information for contacts that is presented in visual styles and with behaviors similar to those in Microsoft Office Communicator 2007. The controls also have context menu items that launch Communicator dialog boxes for IM and Audio conversations. The controls are implemented using the Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 SDK which exposes features of the Communicator client and Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007. Because of this implementation, Communicator must be installed, configured to connect to an Office Communications Server 2007 instance, and running on any computer that runs applications using the presence controls. Following sample controls are provided:

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 computers for and helps remove infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. The tool creates a log file named mrt.log in the %WINDIR%\debug folder. To download the x64 version of Malicious Software Removal Tool, click here. This tool is not a replacement for an anti-virus product. To help protect your computer, you should use an anti-virus product. Microsoft will release an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month. New versions will be made available through this web page, Windows Update, and the Malicious Software Removal Tool Web site on Microsoft.com. To have the newest versions automatically delivered and installed as soon as they are released, set the Automatic Updates feature to Automatic. The version of this tool delivered by Windows Update runs on your computer once a month, in the background. If an infection is found, the tool will display a status report the next time you start your computer. If you would like to run this tool more than once a month, run the version that is available from this Web page or use the version on the Malicious Software Removal Tool Web site. Note that x64 version of this tool will only run on Vista x64, Windows XP x64 and Windows 2003 x64 computers. Microsoft deployed an internal application called Rhythm of the Business (ROB) to help some 3,400 of its financial analysts and top executives around the world support the company’s global sales and marketing strategies with up-to-date reports on progress against key business metrics. However, the ROB team had needs that the current deployment could not meet because of the ever-growing wealth of data that was hosted within the application. The team built a solution based on Office Excel 2007 that improves usability of the tool, as well as increasing visibility into the business impact of the data being presented. The tool also enhances productivity for developers maintaining the application.

We announced the Zune 3.0 software update today and you can get the software over at Zune.net. I have my 2nd generation Zune with me and just started the download.
Check it out!
I had a question come to me in email that stumped for a bit.
"Do you think that Microsoft made SP3 a automatic update too soon?"
It stumped me because I don't use XP for anything except demos and haven't had an active XP system on my home LAN for over a year now. So I have never actually loaded XP SP3......ever.
After a bit of research this is what I found.....
According to the Windows XP Web Site, XP SP3 is available through Windows Update. I didn't have much doubt about that but I can't actually confirm it without building an XP system to see if it end up in the Windows Update list. That means it should also be available to synch up with a WSUS server if you have one.
In addition you can download the package from these links.
XP SP3 Network Install Package - For IT Pros or consultants that need a local copy to patch machines with
XP SP3 packaged as an .ISO file - Just what it says.
XP SP3 Overview - just some light reading....
I have several dual-CPU machines. Yes....these are true multiple-CPU machines, not multi-core machines. With one exception, I have been very happy with these machines over the years. I would like to build a super server based on a dual-CPU config with quad cores on each physical CPU. I haven't paid much attention to the hardware on the high end recently so I am looking for some suggestions on what to investigate. I will say that I am partial to ASUS and GIGABYTE mobo's and I like Intel but will certainly consider AMD as well. I would also like a mobo that supports 16gigs of RAM or more.
So...in summary, this is what I am looking for...
MoBo that support dual CPU's @ quad core each CPU Supports 16 gigs or more of RAM on board SATA RAID eSATA support (optional)
MoBo that support dual CPU's @ quad core each CPU
Supports 16 gigs or more of RAM
on board SATA RAID
eSATA support (optional)
Anyone have any suggestions?
Now this is funny.....

The wife and I are heading out to our usual Saturday night Karaoke hangout - Damon's in Bellevue. It is located just off 148th and HWY 520. It is in the same shopping area as the Safeway. It is not on the Azteca side of the freeway. Swing on by if you have nothing better to do.
Dudes and Dudettes.....
I just decided to take a break, grab a bite to eat and bang out a few tracks on Guitar Hero when I noticed there was a new pack to download. Turns out Metallica has released their entire new album as Guitar Hero tracks. I have not played any of them yet because they are currently downloading....all 1.3 gigs of them. It will also set you back 1550 Microsoft Points. It's a shame you can't pick and choose tracks though I would have grabbed them all anyway.
News Release here...
Rock on!

The latest in the Adventures of Bill and Jerry.....
There have been a few news articles on the Large Hadron Collider lately. Plenty of news on TV as well. But my favorite tidbit of information on the LHC comes in the form of the LHC Rap video. if you have kids and you want to try to get them into particle physics, go grab them and then start the video below.
The Large Hadron Collider was brought online today and the first proton beams were sent around the massive underground loops. According to the linked article, it sounds like basic testing is being done and no serious proton colliding is taking place. The article also states that CERN has not announced yet when full scale tests are going to be run. Probably a good idea since all the "we're going to get eaten by black hole" people would be predicting the end of the world based around that date.

Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2008 Update 1 is the recommended process and toolset to automate desktop and server deployment.
Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2008 Update 1 unifies the tools and processes required for desktop and server deployment into a common deployment console and collection of guidance. The fourth generation deployment accelerator adds integration with recently released Microsoft deployment technologies to create a single path for image creation and automated installation. MDT’s tools and end-to-end guidance reduce deployment time, standardize desktop and server images, limit service disruptions, reduce post-deployment help desk costs, and improve security and ongoing configuration management. Microsoft Deployment Toolkit technologies eliminate interaction time required to install desktop and server operating systems. Interaction at the targeted computer may take a few moments using the Lite Touch Installation (LTI) method or it can be completely automated using Zero Touch Installation (ZTI). Zero Touch Installation utilizes Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 or Systems Management Server 2003 with the Operating System Deployment Feature Pack. Lite Touch Installation can be used when software distribution tools are not in place. Microsoft Deployment Tookit 2008 Update 1 also uses Configuration Manager 2007’s stand-alone media-initiated operating system deployment feature. This release offers project management guidance for all deployment roles and separates technical documentation for the products and technologies to facilitate automation tasks. What’s New in MDT 2008 Update 1? MDT 2008 Update 1 includes new capability for OEM preload scenarios, a revised System Center Operations Manager Management Pack, bug fixes, and revised documentation. The installer package of this updated version provides guidance only in the .chm help file format. MDT 2008 Update 1 enables deployment of the following Microsoft products:
Choosing the Right Version Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2008 Update 1 is offered in two versions to support Solution Accelerator component installation on x64 or x86 hosts. Select the version that corresponds with your host hardware type. Both versions of Microsoft Deployment Toolkit support deployment of x86 and x64 Windows operating systems. The Quick Start and Getting Started guides for MDT 2008 Update 1 are available as a separate download on this page for those who want to quickly evaluate MDT by viewing condensed, step-by-step instructions for using it to install Windows operating systems. DiscountASP.NET has begun offering shared hosting services based Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Internet Information Services 7.0, and ASP.NET 3.5
No shared hosting service provider would agree to provide full server administrator privileges directly to customers—yet increasing numbers of customers at DiscountASP.NET wanted to modify their Microsoft® Windows Server® 2003 and Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0-based Web sites using parameters that required such privileges. DiscountASP.NET had built a set of tools accessible through a control panel that enabled indirect access to some of these parameters, but developing those tools was a complex and costly process. Under Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and IIS 7.0, though, DiscountASP.NET officials have found that they can use the Web server’s feature delegation capabilities and ASP.NET enhancements to enable customer access to key Web service parameters quickly, securely, and more cost-effectively than ever.

September 2008 Community Technical Preview (CTP) This download provides strongly typed part classes for use with Open XML documents.
Open XML is an open ECMA 376 standard and is also approved as the ISO/IEC 29500 standard that defines a set of XML schemas for representing spreadsheets, charts, presentations, and word processing documents. Microsoft Office Word® 2007, Microsoft Office Excel® 2007, and Microsoft Office PowerPoint® 2007 all use Open XML as the default file format. The Open XML file formats are useful for developers because they use an open standard and are based on well-known technologies: ZIP and XML. The Open XML Format SDK 2.0 is built on top of the System.IO.Packaging API and provides strongly typed part classes to manipulate Open XML documents. The SDK also uses the .NET Framework Language-Integrated Query (LINQ) technology to provide strongly typed object access to the XML content inside the parts of Open XML documents.

When I first started in the evangelism role, we had a team that got together about 4 times a year to reconnect with each other and plan things out for the upcoming weeks. We had a tendency to cut loose so a motto was developed for us "Work Hard. Play Hard. Land Face Down." That last part was a joke designed to protect us in the event we were wearing a Microsoft Logo shirt. Land face down so no one knows where you work (at least till they roll you over).
This week we are meeting as a much larger team in Vegas. That same motto applies here only with all of the connotations that Vegas brings with it. We are starting out tonight with a Craps night in tribute to a good and much missed friend of our - Rob Westover. Rob taught me how to play craps in Vegas several years ago. It remains one of my favorite games to play when I come in town. A large group of us are meeting soon to head out and take over a craps table, have a few cocktails, and pay tribute to our friend Rob.
Tomorrow morning's 8am meetings should be interesting.....
Cheers...
