e-Mentoring Opportunities

Today is International Women’s Day and so a very appropriate day for the CATA WIT announcement of the e-Mentoring program “to help women aspiring to be CIOs move into IT leadership positions”. Why is this important? Here is an excerpt from the press release (emphasis mine):

CIOCAN and CATA WIT research echoes the findings of every major North American report on the IT Talent Gap from the past three or four years - women are significantly under-represented in the IT profession. Not only does this problem accentuate the shortage of well-qualified workers in IT, it impedes innovation and the development of markets. Human capital is one of the four pillars of innovation, according to the Council of Canadian Academies’ publication “Canada’s Innovation Gap: Explaining Its Size and Its Causes”.

More women in IT and in leadership positions is better for the economy and better for business in general. Microsoft is the exclusive gold sponsor of the e-Mentoring program.

Winnipeg Girl Geek Dinners

image On that note, one of the things I’d like to do while I’m out travelling across the country on the Align IT tour is support and connect with other techie women. I’m pretty excited to be in Winnipeg this week and able to attend the Winnipeg Girl Geek Dinner tomorrow night at EAT! Bistro in Aqua Books at 6:00 PM. Valerie Romance, a program manager at Varian Medical Systems, will be speaking on the Keys to Success in the Corporate IT World. If you’re into technology, are in Winnipeg and want to connect with some cool geeky girls, you’ll want to join us! If you’re a guy you have to be the guest of a woman, but since my colleague Damir is speaking at the Winnipeg SQL Server User Group that same night,  if you don’t know any other techie Winnipegians Winnipegers email me at ruth.morton@microsoft.com and you can be my guest.

For those not fortunate enough to be in Winnipeg this week, here are the Girl Geek Dinners in other Canadian cities:

Toronto Girl Geek Dinners
Montreal Girl Geek Dinners
Saskatoon Girl Geek Dinners
Calgary Girl Geek Dinners
Edmonton Girl Geek Dinners
Ottawa Girl Geek Dinners
Winnipeg Girl Geek Dinners
Quebec Girl Geek Dinners

For a list of GGDs around the world, check out www.girlgeekdinners.com.

As well, Damir and I will be hanging out this Wednesday morning while we’re in Winnipeg at the Fyxx Espresso Bar from 10am to noon. We might be there longer, working away on the free wifi, especially if you let us know that you’ll be dropping by as we don’t fly out until later in the afternoon. I just have to pop out for a conference call at noon.

Hope to see you!
