It’s great to see Bill and Melinda Gates along with Bono be named Time persons of 2005. They have approached similar problems in a different manner and I feel that each have been a great role model to all of us. I know from my conversations with many of you. You have been involved in donating your time or money and giving what you can. I have only done a little with giving my time and some money yet it feels really great to be part of something that can change the world.
It seems to be a great combination “The Rocker and the Geek”, one gets the attention of the people and the other puts the plan into effect. Each of them knows just what they are doing, the role they play and togeather they are making a huge difference. I like the way Bono puts it "Gates' reputation for business savvy was a plus. When an Irish rock star starts talking about it, people go, yeah, you're paid to be indulged and have these ideas. But when Bill Gates says you can fix malaria in 10 years, they know he's done a few spreadsheets."
For me the Gates quote in the article hit home, they said they were "pleased by Time's recognition that we can solve these problems and that many people must play a part in doing so. We have great admiration for the determined and often anonymous people who work every day to make the world a better place,"
Just having a new son that came into this world last week made me realize that we have a tendency to focus on the negative and not always working on getting to a solution. As I sat in the hospital talking to a nurse about our heath care woes, she said "Everyone talks about the problems and we just keep on keeping on making sure everyday the people we touch are taken care of... given we have so many people talking about the problem - somebody has to work toward making this world better".
There are heros everywhere and it's great to see that role models like Bill and Melinda give credit to all the people that just keep making this world better!
You can get more info on the Time Magazines web site in the article: Persons of the Year
Please feel free to share the stories on what you have done to make this a better place.
That’s a wonderful post and one that I endorse wholeheartedly. Thank you for taking the time to produce a very thoughtful and reflective piece.
We each try to support good causes here in this country and worldwide in our small ways and this needs to be encouraged.
I wanted to highlight the fine work of a CTO, Derek Wallace. Not only is he providing support for something like 10 other groups but he has been providing technical support for a NGO serving 300 villages in India. Quite remarkable!
