You haven't heard much from my side of the blogsphere lately - I have been heads down working on completing the reference network infrastructure that Rod and I will be using in the upcoming Future of your Server Room tour.  Someday I should share our framework for what we use to put together a day long event - you would be impressed with the amount of effort that goes into these day long events. Rod and I have divided up the work - he's taking the messaging, story and slides while I get the chance to get my hands dirty once again with the demos.

I mention doing things a little different in the title for this post. I mean that in a couple of different ways.

  1. we're trying some new things out on the communication and questions front - you'll be able to email or text your pressing questions to us during the event and we'll have some back end infrastructure to support collecting and responding to them. We're still working out the details - but we'll keep you posted on that one.
  2. I am finishing off the demos for next week so that we'll have time to tweak and tune them to perfection as well as have time to RECORD them.  For the first time I will capture them using Camtasia so they can be remastered as high quality video with voice over. These will be available to you as resources so that you can view again after the tour is complete.
  3. We're doing a whole in depth evening event the night before on System Centre Essentials at user group meetings. Check your local group website for details.

I mention that I was doing FoSR on the train - I was trying to be more efficient with my time. I had a speaking engagement in Sherbrooke at a partner event and I needed to regain some work time.  Someone suggested I try taking the train out to Montréal and then drive over to Sherbrooke and back in order to take the train back to Ottawa same day.  I don't know why I didn't try this before! Picture me as your seat mate:

  • Two laptops (one running Server 2003 R2 with Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Release Candidate, the other is my work laptop)
  • wired together with x-over cable
  • one lit up with wireless Internet ($8.95 for the day)
  • Me drinking some red wine and having dinner
  • Virtual Machine Remote Control client controlling my Longhorn April CTP main server and Core install
  • Documenting the demo steps saving progress as I go
  • Checking email and downloading some missing files from my Windows Home Server.

Sure beats the airplane as a mode of travel!  I just might have to forgo my Aeroplan status for the Golden Triangle commuter corridor.
