&lt;p&gt;I have seen cases where sql counters weren't installed on a machine but they are clearly installed because I can use them in the UI version of perfmon.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Maybe you can provide some examples of the most useful operands you have used?&lt;/p&gt;
