Web site:

Tell us who you are and your role in the company:

With the title Lead Singer & CEO, I am one of the two co-founders of Playmysong. My role is the general management, business development and UX development.

What did you do before creating your company?

After finishing my master’s degree in Sociology in 1998, I co-founded Small Planet, of the pioneers of mobile entertainment services. We built SMS and WAP based chat services, mobile marketing campaigns and mobile content portals for big carriers and brands. After the app phones changed the mobile entertainment landscape I co-founded the mobile and web apps development company Iwa Labs in 2009. Then in 2010 we started developing the concept for Playmysong with Timo and we officially started Playmysong Ltd in June 2011. Aside from my work, I have been playing in rock bands all my life.

How do you feel being the most promising ‘Startup of the Day’ per Microsoft BizSpark?

We are happy and humbled at the same time. It’s great to be associated with such a great bunch of cool startups.

What is your company’s mission?

Our mission is to get rid of random music from planet earth.

In 140 characters or less, tell us what your company does:

Our free app works as a remote control for music in venues. With the same app any venue can launch their social jukebox in a few seconds.

How did you get the idea for your company?

Our co-founder Timo Kari was in a student party eight years ago when a bunch of girls from his group left the table to dance to really bad music. Timo was left alone in the table thinking: “I have this great song playing in my head. Why can’t I play it in this venue right now?” He went home and started developing prototypes as a hobby while earning a living as a mobile apps developer. When we met we saw that the time had come for Playmysong as more and more people were comfortable using mobile internet and apps to update Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and similar services in bars and coffee shops. We thought that instead of just checking in to a venue; wouldn’t it be much cooler if you could actually play a song there?

Tell us about your funding history. Are you currently looking for funding? If so, how much?

We closed a seed round of 350.000 USD in late 2011. We are now looking for a 2 million USD Series A round to establish permanent base in the USA.

How many employees do you have? How many developers?

Four employees of which two are developers.

Are you hiring?

If yes, what are you hiring for and where? We are looking for a UX expert to join our team in Helsinki.

Which platform are you building on? Why?

Our core is built with Ruby On Rails and MongoDB. For the UIs and 3rd party music repositories we work with all relevant platforms, such as Windows Phone, iOS, Android and a number of proprietary platforms.

Where do you see opportunities today in the Software/Internet area?

Taking social and digital music services away from home and into the places where people hang out with their friends: Bars, parties, coffee shops, sports facilities and events.

What do you think about the BizSpark Program?

It offers great support for young companies developing on Windows platforms. We also got really good support for building our Windows Phone app by taking part in the Mobile Acceleration Week.

Do you have any advice for young Software entrepreneurs?

Create your company with a world changing idea, then get your hands dirty, launch early, learn fast and iterate even faster to find your engine for growth.

Who’s your role model?

Joey Ramone.

What’s the ONE THING you would like readers to take away from this interview?
