Tell us who you are and your role in the company:

I am CEO and co-founder of Vizua.

What did you do before creating your company?

I was a general manager at Microsoft for 14 years including 5 years as GM for Windows Graphics.

How you do feel about being the most promising ‘Startup of the Day’ per Microsoft BizSpark?

We always are grateful when others appreciate the value of what we do today and are as excited as we are about where we are going.

Image 1.2: 3 dimensional Ultrasound images can be viewed and instantly shared with anyone the user selects, worldwide

What is your company’s mission?

To empower everyone to get access to the best information possible regarding their health and treatment options.

In 140 characters or less, tell us what your company does:

Vizua simplifies the interpretation of two-dimensional CT, MRI and Ultrasound scans by delivering real-time 3D reconstructions in a browser.

How did you get the idea for your company?

When we realized video game imaging technology was decades ahead of medical imaging technology. That’s just wrong.

Tell us about your funding history. Are you currently looking for funding? If so, how much?

We are angel-funded today thanks to some amazing folks who see what we have already achieved and are excited about where we are going. We are open to discussions with other investors who share that same perspective.

How many employees do you have? How many developers?

We have 7 of us working on our service, 4 in development.

Are you hiring?  If yes, what are you hiring for and where?

Microsoft used to have a tagline “Making Others Great” - I loved that one – when you spend a lot of time working you need to be part of a team of people you admire because they make you better at what you do. We are always interested in meeting smart people who can help us be more successful and appreciate those same values.

Which platform are you building on?  Why?

Our rendering server runs on Windows Server 2008 – the tools are great.

Where do you see opportunities today in the Software/Internet area?

I have been part of the video game industry for a long time and many incredible technologies have been developed to make those experiences more immersive. It turns out there are several other industries - including Healthcare - that can benefit from those same breakthroughs in areas such as visualization, human input devices and collaboration. Think laterally.

What do you think about the BizSpark Program?

I think it’s very smart for Microsoft to partner with early stage startups to help them through the tough early years and develop an appreciation for what Microsoft can do for your company as you grow.

Do you have any advice for young Software entrepreneurs?

If you don’t try you’ll never know. There’s nothing worse than looking back years later and wondering “what if?” or “that could have been me”. Software has a relatively low barrier to entry for a new startup – you don’t need a factory, machinery or a lot of capital. You don’t even need an office. The PC you already have is all the hardware you need and Microsoft BizSpark will provide you with the software tools. Being afraid of failure holds a lot of people back from achieving incredible things yet some of the most successful people in the world didn’t always get it right first time. As they say “you’ve got to be in it to win it” - not trying is guaranteed failure.

Who’s your role model?

Jeff Bezos – he isn’t as high profile as some of the other leaders but he had a vision very early on, ignored the naysayers and stuck to his beliefs even through challenging times. He is incredibly smart but he knows what his customers want and is very tuned in. It’s unusual to see all these traits together in one individual.

What’s the ONE THING you would like readers to take away from this interview?

One of my business partners and good friends, Ed Ventura, has a great perspective on taking risks and striving to achieve new things that may be outside your comfort zone – “What do you want people to say about you when you’ve gone?”. Ultimately the question is “Do you make a difference?”. If the answer is “yes” you’re probably already in the right place. If the answer is “I’m not sure” or “no” perhaps it’s time to start shaking things up a bit …?

Image 1.5: Simple controls allow anyone to easily obtain any view, including "virtual cuts" through solid structures
