Interview with Paulo Fernandes, CEO of AdClip

Who are you?

AdClip is an innovative service for Internet Classified Ads.

Through AdClip users can search, consult and insert classified ads directly in a publisher website or blog.

Publishers earn money every time users click in highlighted classified ads or make contact requests.

How do you feel being the most promising “Company of the Day” per Microsoft?

It’s a great challenge and at the same time a great opportunity to present AdClip to potential partners and customers. We believe this visibility can be very positive for this new project.

What did you do before creating your company?

We have started some years ago a company developing technology where real estate and automotive sectors were the target. We developed commercial management software, internet solutions and content distribution for Internet portals. Today we are a market benchmark, working with over 1,800 companies, aggregating over 500,000 ads updated daily.

How did you get the idea? What's the genesis?

Based on our previous experience, we spotted an opportunity to enter the global classified advertisement market with a unique solution addressing the problems of all players – publishers, advertisers and consumers. Publishers want to earn money with their web sites. Advertisers want more business opportunities (leads) and lower fixed costs and consumers want immediate responses. AdClip works like some online advertising programs but with the huge difference of delivering contents instead of publicity.

What do you sell? What is your company’s mission?

The AdClip mission is to become the worldwide link between buyers and sellers through classified advertising.

Publishers are presented with tools to create classified ads in their websites in few minutes having the ability to earn money with no costs. For advertisers, posting an ad is free and they will only have costs when a lead is received.

What is your market?

Internet publishers that want to earn money having classified ads on their websites (like online newspapers, city portals, blogs, etc.) and companies, like software houses, that actually have ads from advertisers (real estate, cars, motos, boats, etc.) and also want to monetize their contents. We share revenues with all these entities.

Funding history?

The company was created in August 2008 and is 100% private capital.

Growth? Internationalization?

The main goal of this project is to go global. We are looking for energetic country managers to take the AdClip into new markets. All the development and infra-structure is taken care by AdClip so that they can focus their attention in public relations with local publishers and give support to their local users.

How many employees do you have? How many developers?

The AdClip team is composed by 11 members, 6 of which are developers.

In each country that AdClip is, a business development team is put together by our local partner.

Are you hiring? If yes, what? Where?

Yes, we are currently putting together a team and seeking highly skilled marketing and operations staff. We are recruiting in Dublin, Ireland; Braga, Portugal and Blumenau in Brazil.

Which platform are you building on? Why?

We are building AdClip based on Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008, ASP.NET C#. We experienced in the past developing solutions both on Microsoft and Open Source technologies. For this project, we have chosen Microsoft products since performance and scalability are granted and professional support is guaranteed for a faster development.

Do you have any Software IP? Is there something that you’re the only one to do on the market?

At this moment we don’t have any IP Software. Although there are a lot of advertising programs and affiliation networks for monetizing publisher’s web sites, we are the only ones providing users with relevant content.

Who’s your role model?

We don’t have any role model. We give our best every day.

Where do you see opportunities today in the Software/Internet areas?

Cloud computing. Developing solutions based on Windows Azure. We attended PDC 2008 in Los Angeles and got overwhelmed with this new solution that will allow entrepreneurs to launch new ideas faster and global.

Looking for funding? If yes, how much?

Until now, AdClip was buildup with private capital. We do not reject the hypothesis of appealing to financing but it’s a subject that will be decided only next year.

What about the BizSpark Program? What do you think?

Yes, we will certainly join the program.

We had already chosen Microsoft technologies even before this new startup program had started. Besides having access to software and support with nice prices, we truly believe that the visibility of BizSpark program will allow us to reach the top in a near future.

Any advice to young software entrepreneurs?

Determination and hard work.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Sharing is the keyword of AdClip. We are looking for people and/or companies that can help AdClip to reach the top. We want to share AdClip success!
