Steps to restore a deleted Cluster Virtual Machine with DPM 2010.

I currently use DPM 2010 and SCVMM to backup and administrate my virtual environment.

I have a 2 node hyper v cluster with 2 Windows 2008 R2 SP1 nodes.

I recently had to delete a virtual machine from SCVMM.  I was expecting to just go back to DPM console and just restore the virtual.  When I attempted to restore this deleted virtual.  I got this error message.

DPM was unable to access the cluster resource group SCVMM testmcwin7 Resources Usa.com for \Backup Using Saved State\testmcwin7 of protection group USA3 VM's. Recover the datasource using the alternate location workflow. (ID 32579)

When the virtual has been completely deleted.  You have two options for restore of the virtual machine.

  1. Recreate a Blank Virtual machine and place a blank vhd file in the same location as before.  Ie ( a blank template).

Then use DPM to restore the Virtual using the   [Select  recovery type] option  "Recover to original instance"  in the DPM console.  You will have to change the harddrive configuration after the restore to point to the correct vhd file.

    2.   In the DPM console.  Restore the virtual using the [alternate location] option to one of the HyperV server nodes in

the cluster.  After the virtual is restored.  Use SCVMM to make the virtual machine highly available again.
