I’m convinced that all good teams share some common North Star. That collectively, everyone on a team, whether it’s a 2-person team or a 2,000-person team should know why the team exists today; it’s Mission. I also think there are two more stars in the constellation. The first is where is the team is going over the next 2 – 3 years; it’s Vision. And the last is how the team operates each day; it's Operating Principles.
It never surprises me when I compare a high performing team to a low performing one, the high performing team has almost always taken some time to define and collectively understand it's Mission, Vision, and Operating Principles and the low performing team hasn't done so.
I agree 100 on this. I live in the SMB world, and SMB's that succeed have defined all 3 of these "stars" and those that fail often have not.
