Great writeup, fairly common issue but I don't think anyone has taken the time to explain it this well. I have a feeling this will become one of the most popular posts.

Rafa: Yes, you are correct. Although we recommend you make that change during off-peak hours, just in case :) I have had a few customers that attempted to make the change you recommeneded and received an error that the move couldn't complete because a zone with the same name already exists. Thist just means that they're already having the above issue and need to clean up the duplicate copy before proceeding with the move.

One question... If I'm patient and I have permissions, shouldn't be any problem if I change the replicatie scope from "Replicate to all domain controllers in the Active Directory domain contoso.com" to "Replicate to all DNS servers in the Active Directory forest contoso.com", am I right?
