The event log showed the following event after boot: Event

re: Video Driver not Loading on Windows XP

Note that this same issue causes RDP failures where you try to logon via RDP and it fails to connect but doesn't show any error. The target computer will show the following event in the System log:

Event Type:	Information

Event Source:	Application Popup

Event Category:	None

Event ID:	26

Description:

Application popup: : \SystemRoot\System32\RDPDD.dll failed to load

0000: 00000000 006c0002 00000000 4000001a

0010: c0000017 c000009a 00000000 00000000

0020: 00000000 00000000

On an older Nvidia driver (9/17/2008 version 6.14.11.7813) I got it working with SessionImageSize of 0x20. But then I tried the 280.26 series driver (8/3/2011 version: 6.14.12.8026) and I was able to remove SessionImageSize completely and RDP still worked.

This was on a 2003 SP2 x86 server where LiveKD showed the effective SessionImageSize with no registry value set to be:

kd> dd nt!MmSessionImageSize l1

808af27c 00800000

The first time I booted with this new tweak, the machine complained it couldn't find an IP address on the network. The second time I booted, GUI.exe (part of Gigabyte EasyTune 5) couldn't load. The third time, one of the Nero dlls failed to init.

I changed this value back to hex 10 value and now the system boots without errors.

I tried this tweak because my system logs are filled with vga.exe failed to load errors and I am running the /3GB switch so that I can use Adobe CS3 programs.

Any ideas why increasing the session space causes programs/services to fail at startup?
