Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services - Device Redirection Framework

Today we're going to talk about the Plug & Play Device Redirection Framework in Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 which the folks over at the TS Team Blog have covered in a three part series.  I'll go over the highlights of the first part here ...

The three parts are broken down as follows:

  • Intro to the Framework and inbox supported Windows Portable Devices redirection
  • Microsoft Point of Service for .NET device redirection
  • Optimizing your Device Drivers for use over the Framework

Beginning with Windows Vista, there is inbox support for the redirection of Windows Portable Devices over the new Redirection Framework.  This includes media players based on the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) and digital cameras based on the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP).  Some quick caveats on these devices:

  • You can't transfer digital rights management (DRM) protected content from redirected media players
  • Plug & Play device redirection is not supported over cascaded terminal server connections.  Therefore if you connect from your desktop that has a compatible Plug & Play device, to a terminal server that device will be redirected.  However, if you create a terminal server session to a different server from within your original terminal server session, the device will not be redirected

The links to the three posts are below:

Until next time ...
