A very common AD disaster is an unexpected deletion or modification of objects. Unlike a bad football match or family meeting, you can prepare for that and make the crisis more bearable. The special steps are there for people that have NOT yet applied the hotfix when they run into the bug.

About the kb article mentioned

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;943576

In the "More Information" point no. 3 it says restart in DSRM > point 4 . apply hotfix and reboot in normal mode . Then it goes on "To restore the database, make sure that this hotfix is installed on all the domain controllers that are frequently backed up and that are the primary servers. After you install this hotfix, the system state backup will simplify failure recovery."

Does that mean for all the DC's I want to apply the hotfix I have to boot in DSRM and then apply hotfix and then boot in normal mode OR applying a hotfix in normal mode and a reboot will do the job just like other hotfixes and the kb article is only talking about the system state backup taken prior to this hotfix being applied?

Sandeep "regrets in case this is a silly question" Anand
