Symptom:
After you install Windows 8, you may find the CD/DVD drive is not recognized.
Resolution:
1. Run Command Prompt as an Administrator. Type cmd in Windows 8 Metro UI and press cltr+shift+enter
2. Type following and say enter
reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001
3. Reboot the system
4. Verify if the problem has been resolved.
I get
ERROR: Invalid syntax
Type "REG ADD /?" for usage
cannot find this name on my regedit.exe "HKLM" i don't get it? what HKLM mean?
I tried this with an external USB ODD and it did not work.
Thanks a ton Pal - this was the quickest fix ever ....
I used that and it worked but it gave me a black flashing square in the video, i then downloaded VLC player and works perfectly now
copy paste the command as admin:
path not found. regedit instructions please
works great.. thanks. is this a bug in the OS??
Wooowwww it worked for me as well :) thanks alot
I get this error!!!
I tried this and thought it was going to work. After the first reboot, the DVD drive showed up and worked fine. Second reboot, still OK. Third reboot - no DVD drive. This is not the solution. Windows 8 has a (nother) serious bug.
Ok.. I have tried everything from this forum and others and nothing helped. So I came up with my own solution. Here it goes:
Go to registry as mentioned above and go under above HKEY.... now here is the trick
I did not find Upperfilters or LowerFilters but I did find something missing (Installer32) string. I have another computer (Win 7) I checked same HKEY under Windows 7 and found that my Windows 8 does not have Installer32 string.
How to insert new string:
1. Click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
2. Go to right pane and right click>New>String Value
3. Name it Installer32
4. Right click on Installer32>Modify..
5. Under Value data type storprop.dll,DvdClassInstaller
6. Click OK
7. Reboot Your Machine
8. Now you will be able to see the DVD drive without any trouble.
thanks very much friend it really works... many thanks
Wow it really works thanks a lot dude,by the way just copied and pasted the command string in to windows searching bar a way faster way to make it works than typing it
Just lost my DVD drive when I upgraded Windows 8 to 8.1.
Harry Matharoo, I can't find the specific path you are referring to in order to insert a new string.
The cmd tips worked for me, and my dvd drive shows up. However when i put a cd in it, it hides again. What should I do???
Please help.
