Word 2010 switches to Draft view from Print Layout view when the computer is left idle for a couple of minutes

Some Word2010 users reported an interesting issue:

You are viewing a document (with reviewing turned on) in Print Layout view, and after a few minutes, the view switches to Draft view and opens the comments window on the bottom. It usually happens when the computer is left idle for a
couple of minutes or sometime seconds.

Resolution:

Please verify EndNote X5 add-on is installed with Word2010. Try following methods:

1.  Start in Word in safe mode (hold the CTRL key while starting word).

2.  Disabled cite while you write - in endnote x5 tab, click the arrow on the bottom right of 'bibliography' -> instant formatting tab -> turn off.

  • Thanks kbk - it is Track Changes that is causing the problem.  I have the EndNote 6 add-in, and have determined that this behavior (switching to draft view and cursor jumping around) occurs only when I have Track Changes enabled.

  • I had the same issue which was extremely bothersome and time consuming. I am using Endnote X5.

  • Same problem here with Endnote X4 and Word 2010 in a Windows 7 machine.

Track Changes on and Comment bubbles open, then left idle seems to do it. Switching off Endnote is not an option and having the view changed, and moved to the beginning of the document is tedious in the extreme.

Only workaround seems to be not to dally when making comments on a document.

  • I had this same problem in Word 2013.  Then went to Word 2010 and the problem still exists.

Never had this problem before.  Can anyone supply an answer.  I do not have End Notes.

    Thanks,

  • I don't want to disable CWYW. This is annoying.

  • I have it too on Word 2010 and Endnote X6 on Windows 7. Annoying indeed!

  • A tips to all: If you mark a word at your current position before you switch back from "Draft" to "Print layout" it will not jump to the start of the text.

  • For those who don't use endnote, try to run regedit and change the following (e.g. change word to word_old):

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Word

    HKEY_LOKAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word

    HKEY_LOKAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Word

It worked perfectly for me until I realised that this somehow overwrote my Endnote Cite while you Write. Once I reinstalled Cite while you Write the same problem as all of you have reoccured.  Very disturbing indeed.

  • Same problem WORD professional plus 2010 and EndnoteX4. The display mode happens when  you're editing a comment or on top of it for a few seconds. Any real solution?

  • Same problem for Word 2010 + Endnote X5. The situation can be described as "suffer while you write".

  • I don't even have track changes enabled and word doesn't need to be left idle for long. I read a bit of a document, turn around, look back and the thing has switched to draft view again. And the thoughts of using Word with EndNote again... please shoot me. The word combination ever! Switch to... retry... switch to... retry... CRASH CRASH CRASH. Complete rubbish

  • Seriously getting annoyed with this now. Track changes are not turned on! I am just reading a document and adding comments. "Enable background repagination" unchecked!" Autosaving turned off. Still keeps changing to draft view every couple of minutes so I cannot see my comments as I write them and if I change back to Print Layout it goes back to the beginning of the document and I have to scroll down to find where I am again. Honestly, the more I use microsoft products (which so often seem to be simply repackaged versions of the last release with a different GUI) the more I am being driven away by stupid things like this. FYI, Windows 8 made me by a Mac after using windows since 3.0.

  • I agree with the other posters. The continuous changes in MS Office products is more than annoying, especially when they screw around with features that are actually useful, to replace them with features that are not. Why don't they =test these changes before launching the new upgrades? MS needs to fix this (and a huge number of other problems in MSO 2010

  • I am using office 2013 and had the same problem. After seeing the discussion here yesterday, I turned off automatic citation update in Word's EndNote tab. I've never had the same issue after that. Now after I insert a citation, I just click the 'update citations and bib' button manually, which does not really give me more trouble than the previous problem.

  • btw, you don't have to go into safe mode at all. All I did was turning off automatic citation update, and it worked well.
