  • Error message “one of the USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it”

Today we will talk about an issue of USB devices that many users has encountered.
The symptom is when you connect a USB device to windows7 laptop, system will pop up a message “One of the USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it”.

In addition, you can find an error code 43 in device manager “Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)”.

This is a very common error code and the cause may not be determined easily. We provide some general troubleshooting steps, hope it's helpful.

    Try the steps below:

    1.    Make sure you update to latest BIOS.
    2.    Reinstall USB controllers
First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

    a)    Click "Start" button, type “devmgmt.msc” (without quotation marks) in the “Search” bar and press "Enter". Click “Continue” if necessary.
    b)    In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".
    c)    Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

    3.    If the above steps cannot resolve the problem, try the steps below:
    a)    Turned the laptop off, unplugged it.
    b)    Pulled out the battery for a few minutes.
    c)    Then power on the laptop.

Make sure the USB device is working, try changing to another USB port.

    5. Also, you can try in-place upgrade your system or system restore from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)

At boot-up, Hit F8 --> Repair --> System Recovery Options Window --> System Restore.

  • Windows Server Backup failed with error "The version does not support this version of the file format"

Recently we found several threads that customers reported windows server backup failed with error “the version does not support this version of the file format”.

    Symptom:

You try to backup the files and folders on a windows server 2008 R2 system, the backup target is a share folder created in a storage drive on NAS device running Linux system. After starting the backup and taking several minutes, error message will appear “the backup of volume xxx could not be completed, Error: the version does not support this version of the file format.” The backup operation stopped before completing.

Before clarify the root cause of this problem, we should first let you know a background of windows server backup

    Background:
The windows backup will have problems with sparse file only in case of "File Level (Selected file/folders in a volume)" backup. For "Block Level (full volume)" backup the sparse file is not a problem and the backup/recovery would succeed. This is because for Block Level Backup the .vhd file is never mounted whereas for File Level Backup the .vhd is mounted which does not support mounting of sparse file.

Thus, we can easily get the root cause

The failure happens while the .VHD file created by Windows Backup is mounted during backup.

The .VHD file is created as a sparse file and this is not supported by the native VHD driver and hence mounting of the .VHD failed.

After some investigation, we found that the "strict allocate = yes" option of Samba will force it to not have UNIX style behavior of creating sparse file. Solution is adding "strict allocate = yes" to the smb.conf and restarting the Samba.

You can get more information about smb.conf configuration on the following link

    http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/manpages-3/smb.conf.5.html

  • User profile cannot be loaded with event ID 1509, 1504

This is a user profile issue.

Some clients log on with temporary profile with error “User Profile Service failed the logon.  User profile cannot be loaded”. Event id 1509 can be found in the application event log. The detail of the event id 1509 is something like below:

    EventID 1509:
Windows cannot copy file \\server\stuprofiles$\mandatory\usstudent.V2\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\1240I065\rerB_DjUStFFe16SFEk84lWs2Osh6fwMPJxC1rA8Qwo3EktjoDVd_D0iWDKfepWLE.u7QlPbk.LXlOspXArg7uJna_L8I4Pwi6RfmQLZSAeLvyy0aLgws4xxKwEDnFCvly9zCn9yGMH5Tmf1_yA2fnT[1].M- to location C:\Users\usstudent\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\1240I065\rerB_DjUStFFe16SFEk84lWs2Osh6fwMPJxC1rA8Qwo3EktjoDVd_D0iWDKfepWLE.u7QlPbk.LXlOspXArg7uJna_L8I4Pwi6RfmQLZSAeLvyy0aLgws4xxKwEDnFCvly9zCn9yGMH5Tmf1_yA2fnT[1].M-. This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights.
DETAIL - The filename or extension is too long.

This can happen if the destination path of the users profile is on a server with a long server and sharename, e.g. \\servername\thisistheprofileshare As the file is stored locally on "c:\users\username" the filename for copying to the destination will increase when this prefix is changed to "\\servername\thisistheprofileshare\" leading to a pathname longaer than the supported 260 chars.

We found several resolutions, choose one of them will fix this issue:

    1.    You can use the " Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed " option in Internet Explorer to delete all cached Internet files when a user quits Internet Explorer. This option does not delete cookie information. Cookie information (which is usually small) is copied when the profile is saved. To use this option, follow these steps:

In Internet Explorer, click Internet Options on the View (or Tools) menu.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Under Security, click the "Delete saved pages when browser closed" or "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" check box to select it.
    Click OK.

    2.    Create a script to delete the file under temporary files . Here is the script below

    strFolder = "C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5"
    Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
    Set objFolders = objFSO.GetFolder(strFolder)
    FRecurse objFolders
    DRecurse objFolders
    Sub FRecurse(ByRef objFolders)
        Set objSubFolders = objFolders.SubFolders
        Set objFiles = objFolders.Files
        For each File in objFiles
     If LCase(File.Name) = "index.dat" Then
     Else
             File.Delete
     End If
        Next
        For each Folder in objSubFolders
            FRecurse Folder
        Next
        Set objSubFolders = Nothing
        Set objFiles = Nothing
    End Sub
    Sub DRecurse(ByRef objFolders)
        Set objSubFolders = objFolders.SubFolders
        Set objFiles = objFolders.Files
        For each Folder in objSubFolders
            Folder.Delete
        Next
        Set objSubFolders = Nothing
        Set objFiles = Nothing
    End Sub
You can also integrate this with task scheduler to run it regularly and ensure you web client cache is flushed regularly.
    3.    Enable GPO "Deleted cached copies of roaming profiles"

    3/7/2011,edit:

Starting January, 2011, the customers reported some of users with roaming profiles having trouble logging onto their XP machines.  When a user tries to log in they get an error message stating:

"Windows cannot copy file C:\Documents and Settings\username\Cookies\filename.txt to location \\servername\profiles$\username\Cookies\filename.txt.  Possible causes of this error include network problems or insufficient security rights.  If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

    DETAIL - Access is denied"

Windows then logs the user in with a temp local profile and the user's settings from the roaming profile does not get loaded.

  • What we can do if error message “the tab has been recovered, A problem with this web page caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab” happen when you browsing some website through Internet Explorer.

Today we will discuss this IE issue. This is a high page view issue from Technet forum.

Sometimes when browsing website we will get this error message “the tab has been recovered, a problem with this web page caused IE to close and reopen the tab”. Then when you click ok this page will be closed and reopened.  This is really annoying us because we don’t know why this is happen and how to avoid it. Some website we think is safe and we really need to browse but IE always pop up this error.

Now we find that most of the reasons why this happens are that we are using one or more non-Microsoft add-ons running inside Internet explorer.  These add-ons could be some bank software, video software or adobe flash or some 3rd party software.

To avoid this happen or to find out which add-ons cause this issue, we need to do some troubleshooting.

    1.       Disable all add-ons

    a.       Click start button

    b.       Click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

If disabling all add-ons solves the problem, use the Add-ons Manager to disable all add-ons and then turn them on only as needed until the problem reoccurs. This will allow you to determine which add-on is causing the problem.

In Internet Explorer 8, you can disable toolbars by clicking the X on the side of the toolbar. If there are any add-ons associated with the toolbar, a dialog box will be displayed where you can keep or disable the additional add-ons. For more information about add-ons, see Internet Explorer add-ons: frequently asked questions.

    2.       Turn on necessary add-ons

    1)      Open IE by click start button, and then click Internet Explorer.

    2)      Click the Tools button, and then click Manage Add-ons.

    <!--[if !vml]-->Description: http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSRJhAN-wYhd_SVFZw_Fr54TPeb176n2chxpLdTFJXDJizGyb0&t=1&usg=__g_BaktOHydi5q_XS6HfMGA9Dc6c= <!--[if !vml]-->Description: http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSRJhAN-wYhd_SVFZw_Fr54TPeb176n2chxpLdTFJXDJizGyb0&t=1&usg=__g_BaktOHydi5q_XS6HfMGA9Dc6c=

If disabling add-ons doesn't solve the problem, try resetting Internet Explorer back to its default settings. This removes all changes that have been made to Internet Explorer since it was installed, while retaining your favorites and feeds. To reset Internet Explorer back to its default settings, take the following steps:

    a.            Close all Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer windows.

    b.            Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Internet Explorer.

    c.             Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.

    d.            Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

    e.            Click Reset.

    f.             When you are done, click Close, and then click OK.

    g.            Close Internet Explorer and reopen it for the changes to take effect.

For more information on resetting Internet Explorer settings, please see the following:

  • Print Management Console on remote machine shows no printers

We found another printing issue from the forum. See details below:

You have a Windows Server 2008 R2 as printer server. You use Windows 7 as a client to remote manage the printers. You opened Printer Management Snap-in and added the printer server. But you found the printers are not showing up, drivers, forms and ports are there but no printers.

You even went ahead and turned the firewall off completely, but no luck.

The possible cause is client system (the system running Printer Management Console) does not have a DNS A record (forward lookup).

To resolve it, add a DNS A record for the system that running Printer Management Console.

  • Mounted folders disappear in shared folder after navigating to them in Windows 7

You have a share folder on Windows Server 2008 or R2. The share folder contains volume mount points. Sometimes the mount point folders appear as "hidden" when you navigate through the content of the folders and clicks "back" in Windows Explorer.

This issue is related to SMBv2

    Background:

This is behavior of SMB2 Client Redirector Caches explained here:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff686200(WS.10).aspx

SMB Directory cache is based on path but when opening a mount point or junction depending on whether you open the reparse point or the target of the reparse point you get different attributes in the create response. GetFileAttributes API always opens with the flag open reparse point so you get the attributes of the reparse point (mount point or junction) if you open locally. But if you open a remote reparse point we get the attributes of the target as part of the create response that we cache and then when the app calls GetFileAttributes we return the attributes for the target of the reparse point from the cache instead of returning attributes for the reparse point. This problem is resulting into multiple problems in the field.

You can observe this behavior by following the below steps:

    (1) Install a Windows file server that speakes SMBv2 (Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2)

    (2) Install a Windows 7 RTM client

    On the server

    =============

create a folder on c:\share1 and share it (at least for your test user)

    under c:\share1, create the folders:

    c:\share1\Dir1

    c:\share1\Dir2

    c:\share1\Dir3

    c:\share1\Dir4

    c:\share1\Mountpoint1

create a VHD and mount it in the Folder Mountpoint1

    under Mountpoint1 create subfolders:

    c:\share1\Mountpoint1\subfolder1

    c:\share1\Mountpoint1\subfolder2

    c:\share1\Mountpoint1\subfolder3

    On the Win 7 client

    =================

Keep the standard Explorer settings in Tools - Folder Options - View Tab

(.) Do not show hidden files and folders."

    net use Z \\Win2008\share1

    open Z: in explorer

    browse into Mountpoint1 and subfolder1

    click back to share1

    Result:

    => Mountpoint1 is hidden

Depending on the Explorer's Folder Options - View Setting, you will see the folder as hidden or not see the mountpoint folder at all.

    Workaround is:

    1. On the Win 7 client set the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters

    DirectoryCacheLifetime = 0

But this workaround limits the functionality and improvements of Windows 7. This workaround may push higher load to the file servers.

    2.  Instead of mounting the volume, mount a directory under the volume.

    3. Disable SMBv2 (No SMB cache).

    Update:

We have published a formal KB article to solve this problem. plese click following link for detail.

  • Windows 7 SP1 install failed (0x80070003 : error_path_not_found) if missing certain built-in RTM driver

Recently We are seeing some errors of Windows 7 SP1 installation failure.

The installation will fail on some system(especially system language in ZH-CN) due to  missing  certain windows RTM driver. We tried to install SP1 but get error message. (Error_Path_Not_Found 0x80070003). Checked on the CBS log:

    2010-11-07 13:09:52, Info                  CBS    DriverUpdateUninstallUpdates failed [HRESULT = 0x80070003 - ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND]

2010-11-07 13:09:52, Info                  CBS    Perf: Doqe: Uninstall ended.
    2010-11-07 13:09:52, Info                  CBS    Failed uninstalling driver updates [HRESULT = 0x80070003 - ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND]
    2010-11-07 13:09:52, Error                 CBS    Shtd: Failed while processing non-critical driver operations queue. [HRESULT = 0x80070003 - ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND]
2010-11-07 13:09:52, Info                  CBS    Shtd: Rolling back KTM, because drivers failed.

The causes of this failure could be many. For example, some 3rd party applications like anti-virus software or system optimization software could delete the system files.

    The solution is simple:

Check the CBS.log under C:\windows\logs\cbs, search for the error 0x80070003 and check what files are missing.

    For example:

    C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\atiilhag.inf_amd64_neutral_951c1812f542740a

Then you can go into the Windows 7 DVD and extract this file and place to the correct folder.

  • Computer Management console will hang when populate the information on shared folder sessions

Today, let’s talk about one computer management console issue.

You are trying to view the information about client sessions by clicking Shared Folders -> Sessions in the Computer Management console. In some senario It could take a long time to populate the information, and the console may stop responding or just hang.

    Reason:

Computer management will try its best to resolve the client IP address to user-friendly NetBIOS name.

In IPv6 and IPv4 coexist environment, and clients use \\NetBIOS to access share folders. If the NetBIOS name cannot be resolved, it shows the IPv6 address immediately. However, if clients are using \\IPv4 to access share folder, the failure of resolving to the NetBIOS name causes the Computer Management console to hang.

To solve this issue, you can follow the steps below

    1.       Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

    To disable it:

    • Run ncpa.cpl
    • Right click the NIC
    • select properties
    • click TCPIPV4
    • click advanced
    • click WINS
    • choose Disable Netbios over TCPIP

    2.       Configure reverse lookup zone in DNS server.

  • "Validate server certificate" option is unexpected to check in Wired network (IEEE 802.3) policies

From forum report, There seems to be large number of enterprise users encounters this issue.

You have a Windows 2008 DC. You create a Wired network policy using Windows 7 GPMC, and the “validate server certificate” option is unchecked. After the GPO is applied, the Windows XP, Vista and Server 2008 start having authentication failure. If you open the policy from a Windows Vista GPMC, and you will find the “validate server certificate” option is checked.

To solve this problem temporarily, you should follow one of the workarounds below:

    • Once this happens, delete and recreate the GPO from Server 2008 (not R2), it works as expected.
    • Create the different OU for the clients, i.e. Win7 clients are in an OU, and Vista and XP are in another OU. Then we create two Wired network policy policies for the option “validate server certificate” respectively.

    Step to repro:

    1.  Have a windows server 2008 DC, and its domain function level is 2008
    2. Create a wired network GPO and uncheck “validate server certificate” option (under “ Computer Configuration -> policies -> windows settings -> Security Settings -> Wired Network(IEEE 802.3) policies”) using a Windows 7 GPMC
    3. Open this GPO from a Windows Vista GPMC, You will find the “validate server certificate” option is checked.

  • Attempt to install Desktop Experience failed with error code 0x8000FFFF in windows server 2008

This is a Windows Server 2008 hot issue found in the technet forum.

In Windows Server 2008, you want to install windows mail or windows media player, so you enable the desktop experience feature.
But later for somewhat reason, you disable the desktop experience feature. After that if you want to get this back, you will encounter an error:

<Error>: Attempt to install Desktop Experience failed with error code 0x8000FFFF. Catastrophic failure (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8000FFFF (E_UNEXPECTED))

This issue can be caused by windows updates: e.g. KB973540, KB968816, KB954155. After uninstalling them, desktop experience will be successfully enabled again. Then you can reinstall these updates.

The updates are for Windows Media Service. They were pushed through Windows Update when Desktop Experience is enabled and Windows Media Service is enabled. However, the updates were not removed together with Desktop Experience removal. When enabling Desktop Experience again, it will detect the files are newer, thus Desktop Experience failed to install.

  • Non-NAP Capable computers receive full network access using DHCP enforcement

This is an issue of NAP.

You set up NAP DHCP enforcement through Windows 2008 or R2.
When a client is non-NAP capable (NAP agent is not running) it should be quarantined because of having configured the non-NAP capable policy's "NAP enforcement" setting to provide limited network access. This is expected.
However, when a Windows XP SP3 client accessed to the protected network, it received an IP address which was no restricted. Although Windows XP SP3 supports NAP agent, in this scenario the client machine is non-nap capable because the NAP agent service was not started.

    Background:
Network Access Protection (NAP) is a new platform and solution that controls access to network resources based on a client computer’s identity and compliance with corporate governance policy. NAP allows network administrators to define granular levels of network access based on who a client is, the groups to which the client belongs, and the degree to which that client is compliant with corporate governance policy. If a client is not compliant, NAP provides a mechanism to automatically bring the client back into compliance and then dynamically increase its level of network access.

There is an workaround that we confirmed can resolve this problem:

Create the following registry in the Windows XP SP3 client.
    1.    Create a REG_MULTI_SZ key named DhcpOptionLocationList under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ Dhcp\Parameters\Options
Add the following values to the key:
    1 15 3 44 46 47 6 DhcpNetbiosOptions

Use ipconfig/renew in the logon script for XP computers only.

  • Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor tool failed to run with error message “Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor was unable to reach the Microsoft server for compatibility information. Check your internet connection and try again later.”

This is an upgrade issue we want to share with you.
When you run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor tool on a system that must use a proxy in order to access the internet you receive the error:

"Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor was unable to reach the Microsoft server for compatibility information.  Check your internet connection and try again later.”

In the error log (%temp%\WuaDiagnostics.log) you can see the update advisor tries to access:
http://aeos.microsoft.com/compatibilityexchange/compatibilityexchange.svc and then receives the error like following:
[7/23/2010 12:04:41 PM] Exception: The request failed with HTTP status 407: Proxy Authentication Required

Currently, the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor does not support proxy authentication.

We should make some changes on the proxy, creating an anonymous access rule specific to the destinations FQDN's used by the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, for example, you may create the following rules:

    Action: Allow
    Protocols: HTTP, HTTPS
    From/Listener: Internal
    To: Domain Name Set
    aeos.microsoft.com
    aestats.microsoft.com
    crl.microsoft.com
    download.microsoft.com
    go.microsoft.com

Update: a KB was published for it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2448270

  • Error message "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed".

One day, I tried to install Adobe Acrobat 8.0 but failed. I got error message” Windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.”. I also tried install ITunes but get the same error.

I changed Window installer service to active and automatic, and use command “msiexec /regserver”, still no go.

I heard another possible root cause is the presence of wow64 with data set as 1 under the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/services/msiserver, change value back to 0 may fix it. But still no go.

Finally, I used the below solution on my Win7, the issue fixed, hope it's helpful for you.
    Steps:
    1.    Start Regedit
    2.    Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/services/msiserver
    3.    Restart computer
    4.    Copy this msiserver key from other (Vista or Win7)machine which works fine.
    5.    Re-install applications, issue resolved.

  • VSS Backup does not work when App-V is installed and drive Q is created

    Update:
Microsoft has released a hotfix to solve this problem
Hotfix Package 4 for Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.6 RTM: October 2010
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2432513

This is a server backup issue. On a Windows Server, you install App-v 4.6 and Q(or other drvie letter) drive will be created. You are trying to use Windows Server Backup on host machine to perform online backup of Hyper-V guest machine, and trying to use the commands "vssadmin list volumes" or "vssadmin list shadowstorage", but you get the following error:

"Error: The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified command."

Right clicking on the C:\ volume and clicking "Configure Shadow Copies...", the following error is shown:

"Failed to retrieve volumes that are eligible for shadow copies.

Error 0x8004230f: The shadow copy provider had an unexpected error while trying to process the specified operation."

Additionally, in the event log, you could notice the VSS event 12293, 8193, 12348.

    Background:

    What is Q drive

Q drive is the location that you can save files while you are sequencing an application from App-v.

The App-V drive you specify must be accessible on targeted computers. If drive Q is not accessible, you can choose a different drive letter.

This issue is actually caused by the additional Q drive.

The Q drive created by App-V is not NTFS which prevent a backup from being performed.

Uninstall App-V 4.6 can resolve it.

    More information:

All disks being used by the virtual machine are configured within the guest operating system as NTFS-formatted basic disks. Virtual machines that use dynamic disks or the FAT32 file system prevent an online backup from being performed.

    See details at:

  • Network adapters icons are missing from Network and Sharing Center.

Here is an issue related to network and sharing center.
In some scenario, the network adapter icons are missing from Network and Sharing Center. But you can see the adapters in Device Manager and can access internet without issue even though a Red X at the notification area.

You uninstall and reinstall the NIC drivers, however, it does not work.

If you encounter this kind of problem, please follow the below step to resolve it.

    1.    Please ensure the following registry key is not missing:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Network\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\{759F6019-7C4A-44BD-A9EC-7DC5393874C3}\Connection

    Valuename: "Name"
    Type: REG_SZ
If missing, created it with a value of "Local Area Connection"

    Valuename: "DefaultNameIndex"
    Type: REG_DWORD
If missing, Created it with a value of "0".

    Valuename: "DefaultNameResourceId"
    Type: REG_DWORD
If missing, created it with a value of "0x70b".

    2. Ensure the following settings are correct:
    1) "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\{27AF75ED-20D9-11D1-B1CE-00805FC1270E}", The default value is ‘netman’, and its subkey:

    Valuename: LocalService
    Value 'netman'

    2) Component Services > Computers > my computer > DCOM Config > "Netman" -> Security tab -> Open "Launch and activation Permissions" -> edit,

add 'LOCAL SERVICE' with 'Local Launch' and 'Local Activation' checked.
add 'NETWORK SERVICE' with  'Local Launch' and 'Local Activation' checked"

    3) Reboot the server after making the change.

  • Red X in System Tray - Caused By Incoming Connections

This is an issue of networking.

After you creat an incoming connection, the system tray icon always displays a red x when no incoming connections are active. However, you still can access internet without problem.

    See bellowing snapshot:

Maybe you get confused why there is a red x in Networking Notification because you test the internet which works fine. It's because no incoming connectiosn are active.

Then you create an out-going connection from another computer to this computer, red X disappears, and normal networking connection icon appeares.

So if anyone see this red x after create an incoming connection, Please ignore it, you still can use internet connections.

  • Keyboard Layout will lose in Windows XP Mode

This time we talk about an issue of Windows XP Mode.

You change “Default input language” in control panel in Windows XP mode, then system reboots or hibernates. You may find the value changed for “Default input language” will revert to the default value (English(united States)-US) after the XP Mode startup again.

    Resolution:

Inside XP Mode, add one registry key as followed

    1.            Start Registry Editor.

    2.            Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout

    3.            On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

    Value name: IgnoreRemoteKeyboardLayout

    Data type: REG_DWORD

    Value data: 1

  • Printer access problems after KB2347290 installed

Here is a hot issue between one hotfix and web application.

If you have a web application running on windows 2003 and windows 2008. and using AMYUNI PDF Converter (or other same kind)to convert documents to PDF. This has no any problem at all. After you installed KB2347290 you will unable to use that printing software. Now users (who access via web browser) hang when the web application tries to access the PDF printer.
If you remove KB2347290, the web application will work fine again.

Here is a workaround for now:

    1.       If your application is ASP.NET or WCF service running under IIS and your web.config has <identity impersonate="true"/>, commenting this line will resolve the problem.

    2.       If your application running as a CGI under IIS, set the following CGI impersonation option: cscript adsutil.vbs SET w3svc/CreateProcessAsUser false

KB2347290 MS10-061: Vulnerability in Print Spooler Service could allow remote code execution.

  • how to extend CSV size in Disk manager

Now and then you have a need to expand a LUN when running enterprise systems. This is a trivial action in most cases because you simply add physical drives to the array and then use Disk Management to extend the drive to encompassthe newly expanded volume.  Unfortunately, on highly-available systems such as those running Failover Clustering with Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV)-enabled features the drive is reserved and un-manageable by Disk Management. The traditional methods of extending the size of a drive isn’t capable of being used due to the tools (Disk Management)disabling the functionality.

Most of users don’t know how to extend CSVwhen their VHD is out of space. Though some users understand they should connect to CSV owner server to extend the CSV, but maybe you are not sure if this operation will cause the VM to go offline, they want this operation allow the currentworkloads to current running during the extend process.

There is an blog article post to Technet on July describing how to extend CSV. It gives four steps to extend CSV. As writer said, this procedure is possible and capable of being done without any loss of service to client services such as virtual machines.
