Symptom:
You recently install a Windows Server 2008 R2 and patched SP1. The server (typically HP server) has multiple Intel CPUs, e.g. two Intel (R) Xeon(R) CPU 5160 3.00GHz.
You then enable the Hyper-V role, it required a reboot. But after reboot, the system didn't boot up, it just stayed in black screen.
Root cause:
Although the CPUs are identical, the revision or stepping are different. If one is revision 'CD' (stepping is 6) and the other is revision 'B9' (stepping is B), the system is not booting up with Hyper-V enabled.
Resolution:
Replace the CPU and make sure all CPU are identical with same revision and stepping.
More information:
To check CPU information, run WBEMTEST and enter the query "Select * from Win32_Processor" (without the quotes) and click on the Apply button.

Recently some customers reported an compatiblity issue between IE9 and Forefront TMG2010.
After install IE9, Microsoft Forefront Thread Management Gateway management tools cannot work anymore, it gives error message like “member not found”, “refresh failed”.
And going back to IE8 the problem was resolved. This seems localized IE9 is installed. Gernam and Russian language were reported being affected.
We are investigating this issue, the current workaround is:
Recently we have some cases that the customers reported the rendering issues with Facebook after upgrading to IE9 RTM.
In every case Facebook had been added to the Compatibility View list due to issues during the Beta or RC or IE8. Facebook does not want to be on the CV list, and we don’t want them on the CV list.
To get back to a great rendering experience, please do the following:
ALT + Tools :: Compatibility View SettingsRemove Facebook.com from the listOK
That should put Facebook back in IE9 mode.
I would like to share some tips on searching with IE9.
1) Pressing Ctrl+E moved the caret to the address bar following a “? “. Entering a search term and pressing Enter passed the search criteria to the search provider you specified (the default is Bing of course).
You have to make sure the following option is enabled:
Internet Options | General | Search, checking “Search in the address bar”
You can manage the search provider by going to:
Internet Options | General | Search, clicking "Find more search providers..." to add more.
2) Sometimes System administrators may have legitimate reasons to block search in the address bar. In this case, you can still get it through the custom SearchURL feature (which requires that you manually modify your registry). For example, if you set[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\b]@="http://www.bing.com/search?q=%s"then you can query Bing by typing “b <query>” into the address bar. This still works with “Search in the address bar” disabled.
And you can also search in the explorer address bar:
And in the taskbar:
You can also set more SearchURL, for example:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\MSKB]@="http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=%s"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchUrl\MSN]@="http://search.msn.com/results.asp?q=%s"

When you try to edit a GPP Policy on the Domain Controller you only see an option for IE 5 / 6 / 7 and 8.
Cause:
Windows Server 2008 R2 GPP Internet Explorer preference items does not support IE 9. The problem is clear in the debug log as the filter did not pass. The problem is viewable from the XML file
The released version of Internet Explorer 9 is not 9.0.0.0.
The trick is editing the xml and set "max Version=9.1.0.0", anyway, it is not supported.

You might encounter an issue during the installation of SP1 for Win7/R2 where the installer exits with: 0x800f0a12. Usually it means the installer can’t access the system partition of your computer’s hard disk to update files.
This is due to the automount policy for your machine being set to disable. To resolve this, use the following steps:
1. Run DISKPART
2. automount enable
3. Restart
4. Install SP1
If the system partition isn't being mounted during startup, you can use "mountvol /E" in Command Prompt (Need administrator priviledge) to re-enable automatic mounting of all volumes.
And ensure that the System Reserved partition is marked active (you can do this in Disk Management or DISKPART).
Also you can try:
Turn on your computer, and then try installing SP1 again.

Often 0x7F or 0x1000007F stop codes trap code 8 are due to overflowing a fixed size kernel stack space resource.
We have heard numerous reports of systems experiencing a BSOD after applying this update, and we have been able to confirm this issue results from kernel stack exhaustion. KB 2393802 leaves less stack space available in the Windows kernel for other kernel modules to use.
The majority of affected systems are running Windows XP SP3 (Windows XP leaves approximately 12,000 bytes of shared stack space for kernel modules to share.), but there is a potential for this issue to occur on all platforms.
Obtain updated drivers to resolve this issue: Intel http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/resredir.aspx?sid=3320 AMD http://wer.microsoft.com/responses/resredir.aspx?sid=3319
We also have seen some similar cases that were not related to the specific video drivers; however the basic problem is the same.
For example, the filter driver pgpwded.sys from Symantec: http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/pgp-wde-blue-screen-after-kb2393802

Some people reported got an error message when he using his computer: Display driver stopped responding and has recovered.
Sometimes, when this error message comes out, the computer will get hang for some minutes and then BSOD or reboots.Resolution:
It appears to be a graphic card driver issue, anyway. Vista and Win7 use a feature called TDR. TDR baically gives the GPU 2 seconds to process what it is doing and display it on your monitor. If it fails to do so in 2 seconds you get the cool flash on the screen and the dreaded error message. In some cases, the situation get relief by giving TDR more time by setting registry value1. Open REGEDIT2. Using Windows 7, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\GraphicsDrivers3. Once there you will most likely have to create a new DWORD (32bit users) or QWORD (64bit users). Name it TdrDelay.4. Once created, change the value to 8. This will allow the GPU 8 seconds to respond instead of 2 seconds.More registry key explanations are here:http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/display/wddm_timeout.mspx Some customers fix the issue through they own ways, Below are the ways they use:1. Go to BIOS and set the CPU from 200hz to 180hz.2. Upgrade nforce motherboard driver.3. Upgrade NVIDIA driver to latest beta build.4. Change graphics card and maybe power supply.

A lot of customers complained the following:When they open up the Task Scheduler, they get a message that says:The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh.
The mechamism task scheduler uses: it has a copy of tasks in registry and a copy of them in task files on disk. If somehow the tasked stored in registry and on disk are not in sync, users will encounter such issues as reported.
Tasks are stored in C:\Windows\System32\Tasks
In Registry, related branches are located in:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\TasksTasks tree is stored in:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\MicrosoftSo the general troubleshooting steps are starting from checking these locations to see if anything is broken or inconsistent.

This is similar to the issue that we posted 4 monthes ago:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/asiasupp/archive/2010/11/23/win7-sp1-rc-install-failed-error-path-not-found-if-missing-certain-built-in-rtm-driver.aspx
Solution:
In most of cases, this issue is because the 3rd party driver clean software ( like DriverCleanerDotNet or Driver Sweeper utility from Phyxion ) was installed, and it made some changes to the system image.
2. Follow the steps from Phyxion on properly restoring the drivers: http://forum.phyxion.net/viewtopic.php?id=17
3. Mount your Windows installation media to a folder
Extract and replace the %SystemRoot%\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository with the following folders:atiilhag.inf_amd64_*atiriol6.inf_amd64_*nv_lh.inf_amd64_*
Extract and replace the %SystemRoot%\winsxs with the following folders (x64):amd64_atiilhag.inf.resources_*amd64_atiilhag.inf_*amd64_atiriol6.inf_*amd64_nv_lh.inf.resources_*amd64_nv_lh.inf_*
Extract and replace %SystemRoot%\winsxs\Manifests with the following files:amd64_atiilhag.inf-languagepack_*.manifestamd64_atiilhag.inf.resources_*.manifestamd64_atiilhag.inf_*.manifestamd64_atiriol6.inf_*.manifestamd64_nv_lh.inf-languagepack_*.manifestamd64_nv_lh.inf.resources_*.manifestamd64_nv_lh.inf_*.manifest
Note: these are the 64-bit version of the files. For the 32-bit version look for the x86 files. You also need to replace the permisions on above mentioned files and folders to be able to replace them.
4. Perform an inplace upgrade of Windows
Some customers reported the issues of power management.
Prior to the SP1 installation the system properly went into sleep mode and properly woke up. But, after installing Windows 7 SP1 you may be not able to properly put the system into sleep mode.
You have to press the power button to force the system restart, and it will show an error that the machine was not shut down properly.
Please try the following methods:
1. Install the following hotfix:
A crash memory dump file is not created, or hibernation does not work, when you use a SCSIport miniport driver as the startup device driver in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2495523
2. If the above hotfix didn't resolve the issue, try:
*note*: Someone said the issue was also fixed by switching "Internet Explorer" ->"JavaScript Timer Frequency" to "Maximum Power Savings".

On a computer with Windows 7 SP1 installed, you develop and build your application that is using ADO for database access, you find the application doesn't run on the Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 without SP1. But it runs well on Windows 7 with SP1.
There is a by design change in ADO in Windows 7 SP1 that interfaces have new GUIDs.
The reason of this change is mentioned in KB983246(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/983246):
"Some ADO APIs are platform dependent in ADO 2.7 and later versions. On 64-bit versions of Windows, these ADO APIs process arguments by using a 64-bit data type (such as the LONGLONG data type). However, applications that use these APIs still use the LONG data type. Therefore, you receive a "Type Mismatch" error message when you try to run the macro."
The interfaces with new GUIDs (in Windows 7 SP1) don't have such issue.
This change causes a break that if your application is re-compiled on Windows 7 SP1 and it uses early binding to ADO, it probably doesn't work on down-level OSes, such as Windows 7 RTM, Vista, etc. Please note that this break only happens when the application is re-compiled. Existing applications should run on Windows 7 SP1 without any problems.
If you have to re-compile your application on SP1, there are several solutions:

To recover the no-boot situation, you need to do system restore or revert to Windows 7 RTM:
1. Apply System Restore from the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
At boot-up, Hit F8 --> Repair --> System Recovery Options Window --> System Restore
2. If the system restore failed, you can use the following command to revert to Windows 7 RTM running state:
In the WinRE, run the command prompt and run the following command:DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions
3. You can also perform an inplace upgrade of Windows using your DVD media.
When you are installing Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, the system is required to reboot. During the rebooting and applyting the updates (Applying update operation xxxxxx of xxxxxx), you may encounter the 0xC000009A error and hang. So you can not log into the WIndows any more.
A typical error is like below:
Error C000009A applying update operation 115991 of 316581 (\Registry\...)
The error 0xC000009A is STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES. The error may be due to too many language pack being installed on the system.
Following the below steps to remove language pack before installing SP1:
1. Click Start and openControl Panel.
2. Open "Region and Language"
3. Selec "Keyboards and Languages" tab.
4. Click "Install/Uninstall Languages"
5. Uninstall display languages except English.
Then you should be able to install SP1. After SP1 is installed successfully, you can re-apply the language pack.
==============
In the WinRE, run the command prompt and run the following command: DISM /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

2. This may be due to a pre-release version of the RSAT tools being installed on the system. To alleviate this failure, do the following:
Please see details at the blog http://blogs.technet.com/b/asiasupp/archive/2011/02/18/remote-administration-pack-cannot-install-on-windows-7-service-pack-1.aspx
3. Run a remove package command for offending package identified in the CBS log or in the system event log.
For example, you may find the following event in the system event log:
The example command is like below:

This is a known issue. Windows 7 does not apply customized power plan policy created by Group Policy Management Editor.Repro steps: (w and w/o SP1)==========1. Open group policy management editor=>computer configuration=>preferences=>control panel settings=>power options2. Create new power plan, in ACTION column, choose “Create” option3. In next column choose either of the build in plan, choose “High performance” as an example.4. Check the “set as the active power plan”5. Customize power plan settings6. Click ok the finish policy setting.7. In windows 7, restart computer to apply computer policy.8. Open power option, you will find the “High performance” box is not checked. But customized settings such as idle time are applied.Note: this problem also exists in user configuration.Solution:
=========In the new power plan properties, there is four options in ACTION column “create” ”update” ”replace” ”delete”, choose the “update” option instead of “create”, then problem will not occur.Do not choose "Create" or "Replace”, instead, choose "Update" then it works fine.
Read the following article. At the end the behavior of Replace/Update/Delete/Active is explained:

In a Windows 64bit system, after you install IE9 64-bit, you will get two IE in the start menu. One is 32-bit, the other is 64-bit.
Some customers reported that they can not open the 64-bit version of IE9, well, there is no problem to open the 32-bit version of IE9 . They said there is no problem to open 64-bit version of IE8 before the upgrade.
The symptom may be the window opens, hangs for a few seconds, and closes itself.
Use the following steps to resolve this problem:
1. Change the option of accelerated graphics:
·Close all windows of Internet Explorer
·ClickStart
·Type Internet Options
·Press Enter on your keyboard
·Click the Advanced tab
·Check the Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering* box
·Click OK
2. If the above steps didn't work, use the following solution:
- Open registry editor (regedit)
- Go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
- Add a Dword called TabProcGrowth and set its value to 0.

ActiveX Filtering is a new feature introduced in IE9. ActiveX Filtering allows you to browse the Web without running any ActiveX controls.
You can read more about it in the link http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Browser/ActiveXFiltering/About.html.
ActiveX Filtering is disabled by default. You can turn it on via the Tools Menu: Tools ->Safety->ActiveX Filtering
Well, we found a few cases that when you activate ActiveX Filtering and try to play a flash video in a website, you get a notification that I must update Adobe Flash. Uninstall and reinstall Adobe Flash doesn't resolve the problem.
But when you de-select ActiveX Filtering, the videos play normally.
(1)Those Flash/Silverlight error messages appear if the correspondent ActiveX plugins are filtered on the site you visit. Turn off ActiveX Filtering for the site and all will be good.
(2) Add the website to the trusted sites. The idea now is to add the sites that you want to play Flash or Java contents on to the trusted sites.
Then make one small configuration change by clicking custom level button in the Tool->Internet options->Security tab, scroll down until you find the entry Allow ActiveX Filtering under ActiveX controls and plug-ins. All you need to do is to change the parameter to disable and click the ok button to save the new setting.
(3) View these webpages in Internet Explorer 9 Compatibility View.
Compatibility View forces IE to render the webpage in the IE8 document mode which does not contain the IE9 changes to the rendering engine. To add a website to Compatibility View when you cannot get to that website, follow these steps:

The error massage is “this update is not applicable to your computer”.here is the repro steps if you are interested to test1. On a Windows 7 machine, install SP1.2. Try to install Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT).3. The error message “this update is not applicable to your computer” will appear.Workaround:
Uninstall SP1, install RSAT and then apply SP1 again.

(2) 0x800f081f when you install Win7 SP1.
When you attempt to install the standalone package for Service Pack 1 for Windows 7/2008 R2, you might get the following error:
0x800f081f <--This maps to CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING
You'll be prompted to run the CheckSUR utility and running that utility will not resolve the issue.
This may be due to a pre-release version of the RSAT tools being installed on the system. To alleviate this failure, do the following:
1. Uninstall the pre-release RSAT tools
2. Reboot the system
3. Install the release version of the RSAT tools (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=7d2f6ad7-656b-4313-a005-4e344e43997d&displaylang=en)
4. Reinstall SP1.
Edit:
