Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager Self-Service Portal 2.0 Release Candidate

imageVMMSSP (also referred to as the self-service portal) is a fully supported, partner-extensible solution built on top of Windows Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V, and System Center VMM. You can use it to pool, allocate, and manage resources to offer infrastructure as a service and to deliver the foundation for a private cloud platform inside your datacenter. VMMSSP includes a pre-built web-based user interface that has sections for both the datacenter managers and the business unit IT consumers, with role-based access control. VMMSSP also includes a dynamic provisioning engine. VMMSSP reduces the time needed to provision infrastructures and their components by offering business unit “on-boarding,” infrastructure request and change management. The VMMSSP package also includes detailed guidance on how to implement VMMSSP inside your environment.
Important: VMMSSP is not an upgrade to the existing VMM 2008 R2 self-service portal. You can choose to deploy and use one or both self-service portals depending on your requirements.
The self-service portal provides the following features that are exposed through a web-based user interface:

    • Configuration and allocation of datacenter resources: Store management and configuration information related to compute, network and storage resources as assets in the VMMSSP database.
    • Customization of virtual machine actions: Provide a simple web-based interface to extend the default virtual machine actions; for example, you can add scripts that interact with Storage Area Networks for rapid deployment of virtual machines.
    • Business unit on-boarding: Standardized forms and a simple workflow for registering and approving or rejecting business units to enroll in the portal.
    • Infrastructure request and change management: Standardized forms and human-driven workflow that results in reducing the time needed to provision infrastructures in your environment.
    • Self-Service provisioning: Supports bulk creation of virtual machines on provisioned infrastructure through the web-based interface.Helps business units to manage their virtual machines based on delegated roles.

Updated Requirements and Limits for Virtual Machines and Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2

Last week during the VDI day I still mentioned that we only supported 64 virtual machines running on a clustered Hyper-V infrastructure. Well we’ve changed the support limits of virtual machines running in a clustered environment towards 1000 VM’s per cluster and still a max of 384 VM’s on each node.

Below you can find the table that explains the max limit for failover clusters. Have a look at the full table on the TechNet library

    Failover Clusters and Hyper-V

The following table lists the maximums that apply to highly available servers running Hyper-V. It is important to do capacity planning to ensure that there will be enough hardware resources to run all the virtual machines in a clustered environment. For more information about requirements for failover clusters and Hyper-V, see Hyper-V: Using Hyper-V and Failover Clustering (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=129063).

    Component Maximum Notes

    Nodes per cluster

    16

Consider the number of nodes you want to reserve for failover, as well as maintenance tasks such as applying updates. We recommend that you plan for enough resources to allow for 1 node to be reserved for failover, which means it remains idle until another node is failed over to it. (This is sometimes referred to as a passive node.) You can increase this number if you want to reserve additional nodes. There is no recommended ratio or multiplier of reserved nodes to active nodes; the only specific requirement is that the total number of nodes in a cluster cannot exceed the maximum of 16.

Running virtual machines per cluster and per node

1,000 per cluster, with a maximum of 384 on any one node

Several factors can affect the real number of virtual machines that can be run at the same time on one node, such as:

    • Amount of physical memory being used by each virtual machine.

    • Networking and storage bandwidth.

    • Number of disk spindles, which affects disk I/O performance.

Edge Videos: From Identity Synchronization to Identity Management

Wider identity conversation with Kim Cameron

Kim Cameron is Chief Architect of Identity in the Identity and Security division, where he works on establishing a user-centric identity architecture for the Internet, and ensuring Active Directory, Federation Services, Identity Lifecycle Manager, CardSpace and Microsoft’s other identity products become its leading implementations.

Cameron blogs at www.identityblog.com, where he published the Laws of Identity.

Forefront Identity Manager 2010: from identity synchronization to identity management

The session will provide a technical overview of Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010. The product’s architecture will be covered, with emphasis on the new components that have been layered on top of the synchronization engine of its predecessor, ILM 2007. Live demos will be given in order to show how easily and effectively FIM 2010 can automate identity management processes within complex organizations, which require much more than pure data synchronization.

    Speaker: Federico Guerrini

Microsoft Identity & Access Management: Business Needs and IT Challenges

Today’s economy has increased the strain to run a lower-cost, more secure IT infrastructure that also enables workers to complete their work quickly and with flexibility. This situation can create a seemingly impossible challenge between workers who want the flexibility of a dynamic work environment and an IT department that needs greater control and manageability. When it comes to managing identity and access across an organization (or within the new organization formed by mergers), even the simplest things can introduce security (and policy) failures, multiply hidden costs, and leave both end users and IT personnel frustrated. As a result, there is proliferation of IDs and passwords. Users need to have different IDs and passwords associated with different resources creating challenges of password management and of course, loss of passwords or inability to access a resource triggers a help desk call. Every help desk call that is generated is a loss to the business in terms of time and agility.
