&lt;p&gt;With the minimize all windows function you can after minimizing undo that by using the shift + window key + M. Which is something you cannot do with show desktop.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Do you see transparent windows? If not you don't have areo enabled. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Open the Windows color and appearance panel and there select open classic appearance for more color options.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Here you should be able to see the Windows Aero select this and it will be fine. If you don't see it it can mean that your video card is not areo compatible.&lt;/p&gt;

When you are running such an application with Vista is automatically switches back to Vista Basic theme.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I experienced this with an older version of Quick Time which was installed on my machine by a Codec pack I installed. Quitting the version of quick time sorted the problem. Uninstalling and getting the latest version from Apple also worked.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer\Turn off Windows+X hotkeys&lt;/p&gt;
