This release of the Storage Cost Calculator is all about providing enhancements.
We introduced the capability for you to select the type of backup solution you want to utilize when analyzing the cost of various disk configurations. You can now choose either VSS Clone, VSS Snapshot, or disable the feature all together. We also adjusted the language to recommend usage of VSS clones or a solution that can guarantee fast recovery (3 minutes + log replay) in the event that you choose to deploy large mailboxes without continuous replication.
- We allow you to choose as to whether you want to price things out on an individual component perspective (e.g. disk cost) or from an entire solution cost.
- We allow you to enter in the number of storage enclosures and storage controllers, their relevant costs and power consumption as well.
- We simplified the SCC vs. CCR tab.
- We now have you select a DAS configuration for CCR and a SAN configuration for SCC. These disk configurations are different from the Input worksheet.
- We also allow you to choose the backup configuration for each (again different from the Input worksheet choices). This removes the hard requirement that you must have 2 VSS clones for SCC. You can now choose which backup configuration you will utilize, as well as, how many clones (if you choose VSS clones). Note that we still recommend for large mailboxes in a SCC configuration that you deploy a VSS solution that can support fast recovery (3 minutes + log replay).
- We changed the way third-party data replication works. Previously, if you enabled data replication for your SCC configuration, you were required to have disks for your VSS clones. Now you get to choose whether the remote site will have backup copies present in the event you activate that site.
o We now include SCR copies in the comparison.
- We allow you to choose as to whether you want to price things out on an individual component perspective (e.g. disk cost) or from an entire solution cost.
- We allow you to enter in the number of storage enclosures and storage controllers, their relevant costs and power consumption as well.
Today we have done some global public communication on the availability of SP2 beta as Customer Preview Program (CPP) – these have been done on some blog posts here:
Windows Team Blog, Windows Server Blog, and the TechNet home page. Other Microsoft sites will also point to the blogs, including the Windows Vista home page and the Springboard Series Site.

Key new features of Office Communications Server 2007 R2 include the following:
Next-Generation Collaboration
Dial-in audio-conferencing. Office Communications Server 2007 R2 enables businesses to eliminate costly audio-conferencing services with an on-premise audioconferencing bridge that is managed by IT as part of the overall communications infrastructure.
Desktop sharing. This feature enables users to seamlessly share their desktop, initiate audio communications and collaborate with others outside the organization on PC, Macintosh or Linux platforms through a Web-based interface.
Persistent group chat. This enables geographically dispersed teams to collaborate with each other by participating in topic-based discussions that persist over time. This application provides users with a list of all available chat rooms and topics, periodically archives discussions in an XML file format that meets compliance regulations, provides tools to search the entire history of discussion on a given topic, and offers filters and alerts to notify someone of new posts or topics on a particular topic.
Enhanced Voice and Mobility
Attendant console and delegation. This allows receptionists, team secretaries and others to manage calls and conferences on behalf of other users, set up workflows to route calls, and manage higher volumes of incoming communications through a software-based interface.
Session Initiation Protocol trunking. This feature enables businesses to reduce costs by setting up a direct VoIP connection between an Internet telephony service provider and Office Communicator 2007 without requiring on-premise gateways.
Response group.A workflow design application manages incoming calls based on user-configured rules (e.g., round-robin, longest idle, simultaneous), providing a simple-to-use basic engine for call treatment, routing and queuing.
Mobility and single-number reach. This extends Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile functionality to Nokia S40, Motorola RAZR, Blackberry and Windows Mobile platforms, allowing users to communicate using presence, IM and voice as an extension of their PBX from a unified client.*
New Developer Tools for Business Applications
APIs and Visual Studio integration. This improves the efficiency of everyday business processes by enabling businesses to build communications-enabled applications and embed communications into business applications.
I was chatting with Alex today who asked for a little publicity on a the following events that will be happening in September. If you would like to receive the UK Technet Newsletter then please register here: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9411296
September 2nd, Reading: PM EVENT: TechNet: Microsoft’s vision for Unified communications
We talk about the “new world of work” and the “millennial generation”, but what does that mean for how we go about communicating in business ? This session will look at how life is changing and how Microsoft technologies like Live Meeting, Round Table, Exchange and office communications server fit together to address communications needs of a modern business, giving a broad overview of each of the technologies, and demonstrating as many of them as possible (within limitations imposed by the venue). We’ll look at the move from voice mail to unified messaging, the difference between UM and the presence driven world of Unified communications and look at the new devices from Microsoft and partners which are going into this market.
September 3rd, ONLINE WEBCAST,16:00 – 17:00: TechNet Presents: MCS Talks Enterprise Architecture session 3 - Messaging
The third session in the “MCS Talks Infrastructure Architecture” webcast series will build on the previous sessions by sharing MCS field experience of how messaging solutions are being implemented today. Enterprises face many decisions when deploying Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 from the choice of underlying operating systems through to implementing a topology that provides a high level of service to the end user. We’ll discuss why and how enterprises are consolidating messaging services and infrastructure, we’ll look at how Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 exists within the datacentre and how to achieve high levels of resilience and availability. Consideration will also be given to controlling client access, message delivery options and optimising network bandwidth. Finally we’ll wrap up the session by looking at how Microsoft System Centre Data Protection Manager can be used to backup and recover data.
In case you haven't already been made aware please take a look at the following announcement made by the Exchange PG this morning on Exchange 2007 SP1 and Virtualisation.
